If choosing the sound matters as much as getting a doorbell alert, compare what actually makes the sound: the doorbell itself, your wired household chime, a separate plug-in chime, or a compatible smart speaker or display. Google Nest, Ring, Arlo and eufy each document ways to change doorbell sounds, but their options and hardware requirements differ. The recommendations below focus on ringtone and chime flexibility—not camera quality, which the available product information does not compare.
Which smart doorbells offer customizable chimes?
These options represent different approaches, not a direct ranking of camera performance. Check the exact doorbell and chime models, compatibility, and package contents for your setup before buying.

| Option | What you can change | Where the sound comes from | Key qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Google Nest Doorbell | Seasonal ringtone themes and year-round options, including everyday chimes and a birthday tune | Depends on the doorbell’s audio settings and connected chime or device | Google says its digital chimes work only with Nest doorbells wired to a home doorbell system. See Google’s audio-settings guidance. |
| Ring Video Doorbell with Ring Chime (3rd Gen) | Customizable sound profiles, classic tones and seasonal tones | The separate Ring Chime accessory provides an indoor alert | Ring Chime (3rd Gen) is an accessory, not a doorbell camera. Confirm compatibility with your Ring setup on the Ring Chime product page. |
| Arlo Video Doorbell with Arlo Chime | Select a melody; different melodies can identify which of multiple associated doorbells was pressed | The Arlo Chime | Arlo documents Wi-Fi pairing for Video Doorbells with Chime 2 (AC2001) without a SmartHub or Base Station. Check the compatibility instructions for your model and region. |
| Compatible eufy doorbell and indoor chime | Adjust the indoor-chime ringtone in the app | The indoor chime | eufy’s instructions do not list every available tone or establish that users can upload their own audio. See eufy’s ringtone instructions. |
What does “customizable ringtone” mean?
Customization can mean several different things. A selectable melody is not the same as changing the volume, choosing a seasonal theme, or uploading a personal audio file. The official information cited here supports choosing or adjusting tones for the listed setups; it does not verify personal audio uploads for any of them.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- Selectable melody: Choose one of the sounds supplied by the manufacturer, as Arlo documents for its Chime.
- Seasonal or themed tone: Choose a vendor-provided option for a particular occasion. Google describes seasonal downloads and year-round choices for Nest.
- Sound profile: Change the sound behavior or tone options available through a separate accessory, as Ring advertises for Chime (3rd Gen).
- Personal audio: Upload your own sound. The cited product and support pages do not establish this capability for these options.
Where will the doorbell sound play?
Before comparing tone lists, decide where you need to hear the alert. A phone notification is not an indoor chime, and a doorbell camera’s speaker is not necessarily the sound you will hear elsewhere in the home.

- Includes 512GB of Cloud Storage. Enjoy automatic cloud uploads with support for up to 512GB, ensuring your videos are safely stored and protected at all times. To view, download, and manage your recordings anytime, an optional cloud service is available and sold separately.
- Existing wired chime: The doorbell may trigger a mechanical or digital chime already connected to the home. Compatibility depends on the doorbell, wiring and chime type. Google specifically limits its digital-chime support to wired Nest doorbells connected to a home doorbell system.
- Separate plug-in chime: Ring Chime is a distinct indoor accessory. Check whether it is included in the package you are considering; do not assume a Ring doorbell camera includes one.
- Dedicated ecosystem chime: Arlo Chime and eufy indoor-chime configurations provide another sound source, subject to exact model compatibility.
- Smart speaker or display: Some doorbell setups may announce visitors through compatible devices, but availability and settings vary. Google’s Nest camera and doorbell settings guidance explains that options depend on the device.
Which option fits your setup?
Choose Google Nest for documented seasonal themes
Nest is a strong candidate if you want more than a single standard ding and value themed options. Google describes downloadable seasonal ringtones through Google Home, alongside year-round choices such as everyday chimes and a birthday tune. Google Nest Audio UX Designer Benjamin Decker wrote that the team created seasonal sounds such as a ghost or witch’s voice for Halloween and a carol for Christmas in Google’s 2022 explanation of Nest doorbell ringtones. Check your particular Nest doorbell’s audio settings and wiring before relying on a digital household chime.
Choose Ring Chime (3rd Gen) if you use Ring and want a separate indoor sound
Ring’s dedicated Chime (3rd Gen) is the clearest fit for an existing Ring household that wants a distinct indoor alert with customizable profiles and classic or seasonal tones. It is a separate accessory rather than a camera or an automatic part of every doorbell bundle. Confirm that the specific Ring doorbell or camera is compatible and that the accessory is sold in the package you intend to buy.

Choose Arlo when melody selection or identifying multiple doors matters
Arlo documents selecting a Chime melody and assigning different melodies to multiple doorbells associated with one Chime. That can make the sound itself identify which button was pressed. Model and regional compatibility still matter: Arlo’s documentation for Chime 2 (AC2001) describes Wi-Fi pairing with Video Doorbells without a SmartHub or Base Station, but do not generalize that instruction to every Arlo combination.
Choose eufy if app-adjustable indoor-chime tone is enough
eufy provides an app path for changing an indoor chime ringtone. Its support instructions say the process applies to all doorbells, but do not provide a complete tone list or confirm personal audio uploads. If a particular melody is essential, verify the choices in the app or product documentation for the doorbell and chime you plan to use.

Check these details before you buy
- Identify the sound source you need. Decide whether you want an existing wired chime, a dedicated indoor accessory, a smart speaker/display announcement, or only an alert on your phone.
- Match the exact models. Confirm that the doorbell and chime work together in your region. A brand match alone does not prove compatibility across all generations.
- Check power and wiring requirements. Battery and wired doorbells may behave differently with indoor chimes. For Nest digital chimes, Google specifies a wired doorbell connected to the home doorbell system.
- Verify what the box includes. A product described as a doorbell may not include a plug-in chime; Ring Chime (3rd Gen), for example, is sold as a separate accessory.
- Confirm the kind of customization you want. Look for evidence of selectable melodies, seasonal options, profile or volume controls, or personal audio uploads specifically. These are not interchangeable features.
What this comparison does not establish
Ringtone flexibility alone cannot determine the best overall smart doorbell. The cited official materials do not provide a current, comparable assessment of camera resolution, field of view, storage, subscription requirements, prices or overall performance across these brands. Compare those criteria separately for the exact models you are considering, rather than treating a richer sound menu as proof of a better camera.
