Whether the game also works on an Xbox console, and whether its saves return, depends on the title’s entitlement and cloud-save support.
What a Windows 11 reset actually removes
A reset changes the contents of the local computer. Depending on the reset option you selected, Windows removes installed applications, settings and, in some cases, personal files. The game’s program files, downloaded updates and local configuration are therefore no longer available after the reset. A replacement PC starts with none of those files at all.

The license or redemption record is held against the Microsoft account used to buy or claim the game. Removing the Windows installation does not normally cancel that account record. The practical distinction is simple: the installation is local, while the entitlement is associated with your account.

Will you have to buy the game again?
Usually, no. After the reset, open the Microsoft Store or Xbox app, sign in with the account that made the original claim, and use the install or download control. A correctly matched account should show the game as owned or available to install rather than displaying a purchase price.
Do not create a second Microsoft account during setup and assume that a Windows administrator account is the same thing as the Xbox account. Windows can be signed in with one identity while the Store or Xbox app is signed in with another. The account that matters is the one recorded on the original purchase or redemption.
Ownership, redemption and subscription access

Game Pass is access rather than permanent ownership. If the original “claim” was actually a Game Pass installation, reinstalling Windows does not turn it into a perpetual license. Check the current subscription and the title’s product page. Purchasing the game separately creates a different ownership entitlement.
What Xbox Play Anywhere changes
Xbox Play Anywhere is the clearest case of a single digital entitlement covering multiple devices. Xbox says a digital game that supports Play Anywhere can be played on an Xbox console, a Windows 10 or Windows 11 PC and supported gaming handhelds at no additional cost. Signing in to the Xbox/Microsoft account makes that game available to download on the supported devices.

The designation is title-specific. A game can be available on Xbox but have no Windows version, or it can have a separate PC edition that is not included with the console purchase. If the store listing does not identify Xbox Play Anywhere, do not assume that an Xbox-console purchase includes the PC version.
How to check a title
- Open the game’s Microsoft Store or Xbox listing.
- Look for the “Xbox Play Anywhere” label in the product information.
- Confirm that Windows 10/11 PC is listed among the supported platforms.
- Check the edition and region shown on the listing; deluxe, standard and bundled editions can have different entitlements.
Play Anywhere affects the platform license, not the fact that a reset deletes the old installation. You still download the PC files again on the reset or replacement machine.
Do your saves transfer to the replacement PC?
Save recovery is separate from game ownership. Microsoft’s developer documentation describes cloud game saves and cross-progression for supported Play Anywhere titles, using a single title identity across Xbox console and PC. When a game implements that system, the replacement PC can synchronize progress after you sign in and launch the correct edition.
Not every game provides that behavior. Some titles keep saves only in a local Windows folder, and some use a publisher account or launcher-specific cloud service. A reset can erase a local-only save even though the game license remains intact.

Safe order for restoring progress
- Install the game and allow the Xbox app, Microsoft Store and the game itself to finish updating.
- Remain signed in to the same Microsoft/Xbox account used on the old PC.
- Start the game while connected to the internet and wait for any cloud-save synchronization message to finish.
- Check that your profile, campaign or settings are present before creating a new save.
- If the title uses a separate publisher account, sign in to that account as well and follow its cloud-save recovery process.
Starting a new game before synchronization completes can create confusing save choices. If the title has no compatible cloud save, recovery requires a backup of the old save folder or the developer’s own restore mechanism. Without such a backup, local progress may not be recoverable.
Step-by-step recovery on a reset or replacement PC
1. Use the original Microsoft account
During Windows setup, sign in normally, then verify the account shown in the Microsoft Store and Xbox app. If the addresses differ, sign out of the app that has the wrong identity and sign in with the account that redeemed or purchased the game.
2. Open your library
In the Xbox app, go to the library area and search for the title. You can also search the Microsoft Store while signed in. Select the existing product entry and choose Install or Download. If the button shows a price, stop before paying and verify the account and edition.

3. Check storage and compatibility
Choose an install drive with enough free space and confirm that the replacement PC meets the game’s Windows, processor, graphics and memory requirements. A license does not override hardware, operating-system or regional restrictions.

4. Let services update
Allow Windows Update, the Microsoft Store and the Xbox app to update before troubleshooting the game. Gaming Services and related Xbox components may also need to be installed or updated for an Xbox PC title to launch.
5. Restore cloud data before playing
Launch only after the download and updates complete. Keep the connection active until the game has checked for cloud saves, then verify the expected progress.

Use this order; it eliminates the most common causes without buying the title again.
- Confirm the account. Compare the Store/Xbox account with the account that received the purchase confirmation or redemption. An account mismatch is the first issue to eliminate.
- Check order or redemption history. Look for the original transaction or code redemption. This distinguishes a completed claim from an installation that was only available through a subscription or trial.
- Verify PC availability. Some Xbox titles are console-only, and some editions are unavailable in a particular country or region.
- Check subscription status. For Game Pass access, confirm that the subscription is active and that the title remains in the catalog for your plan.
- Update the Store and Xbox app. An outdated client can fail to display a valid entitlement.
- Repair the apps. In Windows 11, open Settings > Apps > Installed apps, select Microsoft Store or Xbox, open Advanced options, and use Repair. If that does not work, use Reset for the app, then sign in again.
- Recheck the edition. A standard, deluxe, bundle or add-on listing may be a different product from the one originally claimed.
If the transaction is visible on the correct account but the install option remains unavailable, record the title, edition, account, region and any error code before contacting Microsoft support. Do not redeem a second code or purchase a second copy while the entitlement is being investigated.

Reset scenarios and what they mean
“Keep my files” reset
Windows personal files may remain, but installed desktop and Store applications are removed. The game must still be downloaded again. A local save might survive only if it was stored outside the locations removed by the reset; never treat this reset option as a backup.
“Remove everything” reset
Windows removes applications, settings and personal data from the selected drive. The account entitlement remains available, but local saves, screenshots and custom configuration are at risk unless you backed them up or the game synchronized them to the cloud.
Replacing the drive or the entire PC
A new drive or computer has no game files and may use different hardware. Reinstall from the account library, then check compatibility and cloud-save behavior. Moving to another device does not merge two different Microsoft accounts.

- License versus files: ownership or access can survive while the installed program disappears.
- Microsoft Store versus another storefront: the launcher that sold the game controls its entitlement and, often, its save synchronization.
- Play Anywhere versus ordinary PC availability: a Windows version alone does not prove that an Xbox purchase includes it.
- Cloud save versus local save: a game can reinstall perfectly while old progress remains unavailable.
- Account region versus physical location: moving countries or changing the account region can affect product visibility and redemption eligibility.
A quick pre-reset checklist
Before resetting a working PC, save evidence and data that cannot be recreated from the license:
- Record the Microsoft account used in the Xbox app and Store.
- Check order or redemption history for important titles.
- Note whether each game is Play Anywhere, Game Pass access or a separate storefront purchase.
- Allow games to synchronize cloud saves while online.
- Back up local save folders, screenshots, mods and configuration files when the developer documents their locations.
- Keep recovery codes and passwords for any linked publisher accounts available.
This preparation does not change the entitlement; it prevents account confusion and protects data that may never have been uploaded.
