When an investor sells spot-Bitcoin ETF shares, the trust normally does not sell any bitcoin. The sale is a secondary-market trade between shareholders. Bitcoin leaves the trust only when authorized participants (APs) redeem ETF shares with the issuer; in the cash-redemption structure used by crypto exchange-traded products, the trust or its execution agent then sells bitcoin to raise the cash paid to the AP. That sale can pressure Bitcoin’s spot price, but its size and timing depend on market depth, execution venues, hedging, futures positioning, and other demand or supply at the time.
There is no dependable rule such as “$1 billion of outflows causes a 1% drop.” Outflows can follow a price decline rather than cause it, and the same dollar amount can have very different effects in a deep, liquid market versus a stressed one.

Secondary-market sale: one shareholder sells to another
Most ETF trading occurs on an exchange. An investor submits a sell order, and a buyer takes the other side. The ETF’s share count, the trust’s bitcoin balance, and the issuer’s holdings do not change solely because of this trade. Price discovery happens in the ETF market, where buyers and sellers may transact at a small premium or discount to the fund’s net asset value (NAV).

A large wave of shareholder selling can still matter indirectly. If market makers and APs absorb more shares than they want to hold, they can hedge, sell related instruments, or accumulate shares for a later redemption. Those responses connect ETF trading with spot and futures markets, but they are not the same as an immediate sale of coins by the trust.
Primary-market redemption: an AP returns shares to the issuer
An AP is a specialized financial firm allowed to create or redeem ETF shares directly with the issuer. If APs accumulate enough unwanted shares, they can present them for redemption. The shares are retired, so shares outstanding fall. In a cash-redemption structure, the AP receives cash rather than bitcoin. The trust or a designated execution agent must obtain that cash, usually by selling some of the bitcoin backing the redeemed shares.
The Federal Reserve notes that crypto ETPs must redeem in cash. That extra step differs from an in-kind process in which an AP could receive the underlying asset directly. Cash redemption introduces an execution and custody chain: the issuer must arrange a bitcoin sale, settle the trade, and deliver cash to the AP.
| Event | What changes immediately | Does the trust have to sell bitcoin? |
|---|---|---|
| Investor sells ETF shares on an exchange | Ownership of shares changes between buyers and sellers; the exchange price may move. | No. Holdings and shares outstanding do not change just because of the trade. |
| AP redeems shares with the issuer | Shares are retired and shares outstanding decline; the AP receives cash in a cash-redemption structure. | Usually yes, directly or through an execution agent, to raise the redemption cash. |
How a cash redemption reaches the Bitcoin market
A redemption-related sale follows a sequence rather than a single click. The exact timing and venue are product- and agent-specific.
- Investors sell shares. Exchange selling may be matched by ordinary buyers, market makers, or APs. At this stage, no trust transaction is required.
- An AP accumulates shares. If the AP’s inventory becomes large or the ETF trades below the value of its underlying bitcoin, redeeming may be more attractive than continuing to hold or resell the shares.
- The issuer accepts the redemption. The shares are cancelled, reducing the number outstanding. The AP is owed cash under the fund’s redemption terms.
- The trust or agent raises cash. Bitcoin is sold in the quantity needed for the cash payment, taking account of execution costs and the bitcoin price during the sale.
- The transaction settles. Cash goes to the AP, and the sold bitcoin is delivered to the buyer or buyers. The sale can occur over-the-counter (OTC), through one venue, or across several venues. Public exchange order books may therefore show only part of the execution, or show it with a delay.
- Arbitrage and hedging redistribute the effect. Market makers can trade spot, futures, options, and ETF shares to manage their exposure. Those trades can dampen or amplify the initial pressure.
Because the execution method is not uniform, an outflow headline is not proof that an equal amount of bitcoin was immediately dumped on a public exchange. The gross redemption value, the actual bitcoin sold, the execution schedule, and the market’s ability to absorb orders are separate facts.

Why a redemption can push the spot price lower
A redemption creates potential sell pressure: a bitcoin-backed trust is selling an asset to fund a cash payment. The price response depends on how aggressively the sale consumes available bids and how other participants react.
Order-book depth and turnover
In a deep market, a large order can be spread over time and across venues with limited slippage. In a thin or stressed market, the same order can remove several layers of bids and move the price sharply before liquidity providers replenish them. Daily volume alone is not enough; the relevant question is how much executable liquidity exists near the prevailing price at the moment of the sale.

An OTC block may be negotiated privately and then hedged in public markets. An algorithm can divide an order among exchanges and time slices. A rapid market order can have a more visible short-term impact. Without the agent’s execution details, observers cannot infer the path from a reported redemption to a particular candle on a price chart.
Concurrent demand
New ETF creations, corporate purchases, derivatives demand, or ordinary spot buyers can offset redemption selling. Conversely, if several funds redeem at once while other holders are also selling, pressure can compound. Net flows describe the balance of creations and redemptions, not every trade taking place around them.
Hedging and futures spillovers
The Bank for International Settlements (BIS) described a flow-rebalancing channel in futures-based products: when an ETF buys futures after inflows, futures prices can rise; outflows can reverse that process. The BIS also noted that futures-market price impact can spill into spot markets through investors’ hedging behavior. A spot ETF redemption may therefore affect Bitcoin through both the trust’s sale and the derivatives positions used by liquidity providers and arbitrageurs.

Market segmentation and settlement friction
The Federal Reserve has documented segmentation between equity and crypto markets. Different trading hours, custody arrangements, settlement cycles, and access rules can delay arbitrage. When the ETF market and the underlying market cannot be balanced instantly, a premium or discount can persist and the eventual adjustment can be larger than a simple one-for-one flow calculation suggests.

Price and flow can influence each other. A falling Bitcoin price can make ETF holders sell, producing an outflow after the decline has already begun. The same decline can cause APs to hedge or redeem, adding further supply. A chart showing both a lower price and an outflow establishes timing and association, not the direction of causation.
Nico Oefele’s 2025 analysis of a one-year Bitcoin spot-ETP sample reported an average weekly net fund flow of 1.4%. In the reported relationship, a 3.4% Bitcoin price change corresponded on average to a 0.2% net-flow change, all else equal. That statistic is an average association from the specified sample and period, not a trading rule or a claim that every dollar of outflow moves the market by the same amount. It also illustrates why price changes can be a major driver of flows.
To assess causation in a particular episode, establish the sequence: did Bitcoin move before the outflow, did the outflow begin before the move, or did both respond to a third event such as macroeconomic news, a liquidation wave, or a change in risk appetite? Compare net creations and redemptions with ETF turnover, spot and futures liquidity, and the timing of any confirmed redemption execution.
ETF liquidity, spreads, and NAV tracking
ETF liquidity affects how easily investors can trade shares and how quickly arbitrage can close a premium or discount. It does not eliminate the possibility of underlying-market impact.

Bid-ask spreads
In a 2025 Federal Reserve sample, crypto ETPs had a mean bid-ask spread of 4.6 basis points, compared with 58.1 basis points for the reference assets. The Federal Reserve said crypto ETP spreads were similar to those of other ETPs and ETFs of comparable size. These are sample averages, not a guarantee for every fund or every moment; spreads can widen during volatility, outside the most active hours, or when market makers reduce risk.
NAV premiums and discounts
The same Federal Reserve work found that crypto ETPs tracked NAV less closely than other ETPs and ETFs referencing assets of comparable liquidity. Arbitrage is harder when the underlying asset trades continuously, custody is fragmented, and creation or redemption requires cash, settlement, and operational coordination. A discount can attract APs to buy shares and redeem them; a premium can encourage creations. The process tends to pull the share price toward NAV, but it is not instantaneous or costless.
Size and concentration
Larger products generally attract more market makers and trading volume, which can produce tighter spreads. Concentration also matters: a redemption from one large trust may be easier to execute than the same value spread among many smaller products, but a large single fund can create a more noticeable one-time inventory need for APs and execution desks.

Several published figures provide scale, but none supplies a universal price-impact coefficient.
| Figure | Source and qualification | What it tells you |
|---|---|---|
| About $100 billion | Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System, 2025; aggregate crypto-ETP market capitalization in late December 2024. | The sector was large enough for flows to matter, but aggregate capitalization is not the same as daily executable liquidity. |
| Roughly 20% institutional ownership | Federal Reserve analysis of 13-F filings through September 2024; retail and smaller investors held roughly 80%. | Reported institutional holdings were a minority of shares in that filing data. Ownership mix affects trading behavior and response speed. |
| 4.6 basis points versus 58.1 basis points | Federal Reserve 2025 sample means for crypto ETP and reference-asset bid-ask spreads. | ETF shares can trade with relatively tight spreads even when the underlying market’s arbitrage and custody are more complicated. |
| 982,160,000 shares created; 11,724,000 redeemed | iShares Bitcoin Trust ETF 2024 Form 10-K, filed in 2025; figures cover 2024 activity. | Creation and redemption volumes can be very different. Gross creations or redemptions should not be confused with net flow. |
| $103.75 million net realized gain | iShares Bitcoin Trust ETF 2024 Form 10-K, filed in 2025; gain from bitcoin sold for share redemptions during 2024. | The filing documents that bitcoin was sold for redemptions and records the resulting realized gain; it does not provide a general price-impact percentage. |
| More than $1 billion in first days; about one third of short-term bitcoin-futures market after ten days | BIS, 2021, describing the futures-based BITO ETF shortly after launch. | A futures ETF can quickly become large relative to its reference market, making rebalancing and hedging channels important. |
The iShares filing is particularly useful because it distinguishes operational activity from a simple “investors sold, therefore coins were sold” story. The recorded redemptions and realized gain show that redemption-related bitcoin sales occurred during 2024, but they do not establish that each shareholder sale triggered a sale or that every sale moved the market materially.

How to analyze a claimed $1 billion outflow
A $1 billion headline is a starting point, not a forecast. Use the following framework before assigning a likely price effect.
- Identify the flow measure. Determine whether the figure is gross redemptions, net flow, estimated creations and redemptions, or secondary-market turnover. These are not interchangeable.
- Check the date and time window. A daily number can hide several hours of execution or a multi-day settlement process. Match the flow window to Bitcoin’s trading hours and the relevant futures session.
- Compare the amount with available liquidity. Examine depth near the market price, bid-ask spreads, spot turnover, futures open interest, and volatility. A percentage of market capitalization is a poor substitute for executable depth.
- Look for a NAV premium or discount. A discount can motivate AP purchases and redemption; a premium can motivate creations. The size and persistence of the deviation indicate how strongly arbitrage incentives are operating.
- Find evidence of primary-market activity. Share-count changes, issuer disclosures, or settlement data are more informative than a social-media post equating exchange selling with a trust sale.
- Consider execution and custody friction. Cash redemption requires the issuer or agent to sell bitcoin and settle cash. OTC execution, multiple venues, withdrawal limits, or custody procedures can spread the impact over time.
- Map derivatives positioning. Futures hedges, options, and leveraged liquidations can amplify or offset spot selling. The BIS flow-rebalancing and hedging channels are relevant even when the original product is a spot ETF.
- Test the reverse-causality explanation. If Bitcoin fell first, investors may have redeemed in response. Compare intraday timestamps and broader market news before attributing the move to the ETF.
After those checks, the most defensible conclusion may be qualitative: the outflow added potential supply, but the data do not identify how much of the observed price move it caused.
Illustrative market scenarios
The following cases show why the same reported outflow can have different outcomes. They are analytical examples, not predictions.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Deep liquidity, strong offsetting demand
Suppose APs redeem shares while other funds create shares and spot buyers are active. An execution desk can sell gradually across venues, and bids refill quickly. Bitcoin may experience little net movement even though the redemption is real.
Thin liquidity after a sharp decline
If Bitcoin has already fallen, ETF holders redeem, and market makers are reducing risk, near-price bids may be sparse. The redemption sale can accelerate the decline, while the decline prompts additional ETF selling. Here, feedback between price and flow matters more than the headline dollar amount alone.
Large discount with delayed arbitrage
If ETF shares trade at a substantial discount but APs face custody or settlement constraints, they may not close the gap immediately. The share price can remain below NAV while the underlying bitcoin sale is delayed or executed in stages. A later burst of arbitrage may then produce a different price pattern from the original outflow day.
What investors should monitor
- Net creations and redemptions: distinguish them from total ETF volume.
- Shares outstanding: a decline is evidence of primary-market redemptions; a falling share price alone is not.
- NAV premium or discount: persistent deviations reveal arbitrage friction.
- Bid-ask spreads and depth: widening spreads signal that immediate liquidity is deteriorating.
- Spot and futures conditions: monitor open interest, basis, funding, and liquidation activity alongside ETF data.
- Execution disclosures: note whether the issuer identifies OTC trades, agents, or staged sales.
- Price chronology: establish whether Bitcoin moved before the flow, after it, or simultaneously with another catalyst.
- Ownership and concentration: institutional filing data and fund size can indicate who may be able to transact quickly, but filings are delayed and do not reveal every holder.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Equating every red arrow with a coin sale. Secondary-market selling changes ownership of shares, not the trust’s bitcoin balance.
- Assuming an exchange timestamp is a redemption timestamp. Creation and redemption settlement can occur on a different schedule.
- Using market capitalization as liquidity. A $1 billion market value does not mean $1 billion can be sold near the current price without slippage.
- Applying a fixed percentage formula. No stable universal conversion exists between ETF outflow dollars and Bitcoin’s percentage move.
- Ignoring futures and hedging. Derivatives can transmit, amplify, or offset spot pressure.
- Calling correlation causation. A price fall can produce the outflow, and both can reflect a third event.
- Overreading one fund’s data. A single issuer’s creations, redemptions, or realized gain do not describe all spot ETFs or every market episode.
Bottom line
A spot-Bitcoin ETF shareholder’s sale is normally a trade with another market participant, so it does not automatically make the trust sell bitcoin. Bitcoin selling becomes part of the process when APs redeem shares; under cash redemption, the trust or its agent sells bitcoin to fund the cash payment. That supply can affect price, but the outcome is set by liquidity, execution, hedging, concurrent flows, and market conditions. Treat a reported outflow as one piece of evidence, not as a mechanical explanation for a specific percentage move.
