A VTuber hiatus has no single, automatic outcome. YouTube may leave the channel and its public archive online, while the creator or agency decides whether streaming stops temporarily, memberships continue, or member access ends on a scheduled date. A break by itself is not the same as channel deletion, graduation, or termination.
The important distinction is between the channel’s video archive and its membership program. Public videos can remain viewable even when no new streams are planned. Memberships may stay active under an agency’s timetable, enter YouTube’s paused mode, or be terminated, depending on the notice and the channel’s platform status.

What a normal VTuber hiatus does to the YouTube channel
In ordinary usage, a hiatus means that a VTuber or their agency has announced reduced or stopped activity for a period of time. The cited YouTube membership documentation does not say that ordinary inactivity automatically deletes a channel or removes its videos. A channel can therefore remain searchable, with past uploads still playable, while the creator publishes no new streams.

A notice may say that existing videos remain available, that selected uploads will become private, or that the channel will be closed later. If the announcement does not specify the archive, treat its future status as unconfirmed rather than assuming preservation or deletion.

Public videos and members-only videos are separate questions
Public uploads and members-only posts do not necessarily follow the same timetable. An agency can keep public videos visible while ending access to members-only material, or it can leave both available until a stated cutoff. Read the notice for separate wording about the public archive, members-only videos, community posts, badges, and emoji.
Independent creators and agencies can set different policies
An agency announcement is not an industry-wide rule. A solo VTuber controls their own schedule and account decisions; an agency may publish a standardized wind-down process, with dates that differ by talent. YouTube’s platform rules determine what happens when memberships enter a particular account state, but they do not dictate how every hiatus is announced or how an archive is curated.
What happens to YouTube memberships during a hiatus
There are three practical membership outcomes: the program remains active, YouTube places it in paused mode, or memberships are terminated. The creator’s announcement and the current state of the channel’s Join button are the most useful evidence for telling them apart.

When YouTube puts memberships into paused mode
YouTube’s current membership policy lists specific triggers for paused mode. They include channel termination, a violation of monetization policies, loss of monetization following an ownership change, and a channel being set as made for kids. Paused mode is therefore a platform status, not simply a synonym for a creator saying, “I am taking a break.”

In paused mode, YouTube says members lose access to channel perks, including badges, emoji and members-only posts. Monthly payments pause, and the Join button disappears from the channel. A member may still see the channel and its public videos, but should not expect membership benefits to work during the pause.
The 120-day limit for a paused membership program
Paused mode does not cancel every member on the first day. YouTube states that web members are automatically canceled after 120 days if the channel remains paused. Members who joined through a mobile app may be canceled when their current billing period ends. If the channel remains paused beyond 120 days, YouTube ends the membership program and automatically refunds members’ last month.
If the channel resumes memberships before a member cancels, YouTube says perks return and the member is charged again at the start of the next billing cycle. The practical result is that a paused account can recover, but members should watch their billing history and the channel’s status rather than assuming the pause will be brief.
What termination means
When a channel terminates or loses access to memberships, YouTube says all recurring payments and membership perks end immediately. Members receive information about requesting a refund. This is different from a scheduled agency end date: a planned date may allow benefits to continue until the cutoff, while termination stops the program at once under YouTube’s rules.

Can a VTuber keep charging members after stopping streams?
Yes, it can happen when the creator or agency leaves memberships active. Stopping live broadcasts does not, by itself, establish that billing has paused. Some agencies deliberately keep memberships open for a transition period so members can use existing benefits or view members-only material until a published end time.
Conversely, if YouTube has placed the channel in paused mode, recurring payments pause and the Join button disappears. If memberships have been terminated, charges stop immediately. Check the account’s membership page, payment receipt and the creator’s notice together; any one of those can be incomplete on its own.
Do badges and emoji keep working?
Only while the membership state and the channel’s own schedule allow them. YouTube’s paused-mode rule specifically removes access to perks such as badges and emoji, along with members-only posts. A notice that memberships remain open until a future date may preserve those benefits until that date, but it does not override a platform suspension or termination.
What happens to a recurring charge?
An active membership normally renews under its existing billing cycle. In paused mode, monthly payments pause; web memberships can later be canceled automatically after 120 days, while app memberships may end when their billing period expires. On termination, recurring payments stop immediately and YouTube supplies refund-request information. Keep the original receipt, the date of the last charge and screenshots of the membership status if you need to contact support.

Published agency timelines show why the notice matters
Agency examples demonstrate that a final stream and a membership end date can be different events. COVER’s HOLOSTARS JP announcement dated May 26, 2026 said that memberships and members-only content would be discontinued approximately three months after each talent’s final streaming date. The announcement indicated that exact dates differed by talent, so the individual notice remains controlling.
In COVER’s announcement about Sakamata Chloe, YouTube streaming, social posting, events and new merchandise activities were scheduled to end on January 26, 2025. Memberships and members-only content remained available until 11:59 PM on April 30, 2025 Japan Standard Time. That is a concrete example of a creator stopping regular activity while membership access continued for a limited wind-down period.
COVER also explained that “conclusion of streaming activities” meant stopping streaming-related activity on YouTube and social media and ending event participation. The company left open the possibility of limited future appearances, noting that the extent of participation would vary with each talent’s circumstances and the production. A conclusion notice therefore does not automatically mean that every future appearance or every archived video will disappear.

Hiatus, graduation and termination are not the same
Hiatus
A hiatus generally describes a break or reduction in activity, often with no permanent end date. The channel may remain active as an archive, and memberships may continue, pause or be scheduled to end. Only the specific announcement can establish which arrangement applies.

Graduation or conclusion of activities
These labels usually indicate that regular VTuber activity is ending, although an agency may still permit limited appearances or keep an archive online. Memberships and members-only content can remain available after the final stream for a stated transition period, as the published Sakamata Chloe and HOLOSTARS JP examples show.
Termination
Termination is an account or contractual end rather than an ordinary break. If YouTube terminates the channel or removes membership access, its policy says recurring payments and perks end immediately and members receive refund information. A creator’s public announcement may use different wording, so confirm whether the platform itself has terminated the account.
How to check a specific VTuber’s status
- Read the creator or agency announcement. Record the status label, final stream date, membership end date, archive statement and any time zone. Do not infer an end date from the date of the last upload.
- Open the channel while signed in. Check whether the Join button is present, absent because of a pause, or replaced by a message that memberships are unavailable.
- Check your membership page and receipts. Look for the next billing date, cancellation state and whether the membership was purchased on the web or through a mobile app.
- Test the relevant content. Confirm whether a public video plays and whether a members-only post or video still opens. These are separate access checks.
- Check YouTube’s account messages. A platform termination or loss of membership access should include information about payments and possible refunds.
- Save the evidence. Keep the announcement URL, screenshots and receipts if the stated schedule and the account’s billing behavior disagree.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Assuming inactivity deletes the channel. YouTube’s cited membership rules do not say that an ordinary hiatus automatically removes a channel or its videos.
- Assuming every archive is permanent. Archive retention is a creator or agency decision, not a guaranteed consequence of taking a break.
- Confusing a missing Join button with a creator’s voluntary pause. The button can disappear in YouTube paused mode, which has its own billing and 120-day rules.
- Applying one agency’s timeline to another VTuber. The HOLOSTARS JP and Sakamata Chloe examples illustrate possible schedules, not a universal industry policy.
- Expecting members-only access to match public-video access. Agencies can set different rules for public uploads and paid content.
- Ignoring the purchase platform. Web and mobile memberships have different automatic-cancellation timing during an extended pause.
What the membership revenue rule does—and does not—tell you
YouTube says creators receive 70% of membership revenue recognized by Google after local sales tax and other fees. That is the platform’s stated share calculation; it does not reveal how an agency divides revenue with an individual VTuber. A hiatus announcement or membership end date cannot be predicted from that percentage.

No published industry-wide statistic establishes how many VTuber channels remain online during hiatuses. The reliable way to answer a particular case is to combine the creator or agency notice with the channel’s current YouTube membership state and the billing information attached to the member’s account.
