When a studio leaves a platform holder, its game does not automatically leave with it. The outcome depends on who owns the game’s intellectual property, who has publishing rights, whether a new publisher takes over, what the platform’s store and licensing arrangements allow, and whether the game depends on online services. A studio can regain its games, lose access to a franchise it created, transfer support to a new publisher, or see a title discontinued.
Does the studio take its games with it?
Not necessarily. A studio’s corporate status and a game’s ownership are separate questions. Development credits do not establish who owns the intellectual property or publishing rights; those depend on the agreements for that title.

Double Fine is a documented case where independence and game ownership returned together. On July 6, 2026, the studio announced it was independent again and said the outcome “returns ownership of our games to us.” That describes the terms Double Fine announced for its own return, not a rule that applies whenever a studio departs.

Xbox also reported on September 22, 2026, that Compulsion Games and Double Fine returned to management with their intellectual property, back catalogs, and runway funding. Xbox said Undead Labs transitioned on similar terms, with a new publisher for State of Decay 3. The same update described proposed Ninja Theory agreements that fell through and consultations about proposed studio closures, with Arkane’s consultation still underway. A departure plan, therefore, may be negotiated title by title and may remain unresolved while consultations continue.

Can a platform holder keep the game or franchise?
Yes. A platform holder may retain a game or franchise even if it changes or closes the team that developed it. The studio’s departure, a project cancellation, and a transfer of the underlying rights are distinct events; one does not establish the others.
On October 29, 2024, Sony announced that it would close Firewalk Studios and permanently sunset Concord. Sony’s statement said: “After much thought, we have determined the best path forward is to permanently sunset the game and close the studio.” The announcement shows a platform holder ending both the game and the studio, rather than a departing team taking the game elsewhere.

Acquisition also does not by itself establish an immediate move to exclusive publishing. In its January 31, 2022 announcement of the Bungie acquisition, Sony described Bungie as an independent subsidiary able to self-publish and reach players across platforms. That is the arrangement Sony announced at that date; it should not be treated as a guarantee of later terms.

Sometimes. A new publisher can take responsibility for a continuation or ongoing release, as Xbox said happened with Undead Labs and State of Decay 3. Xbox’s September 22, 2026 update said the game was slated for day-one release on Game Pass. That is a stated plan, not proof that every departing studio’s projects will transfer or that a planned release has since occurred.

Publishing involves more than owning the game. A publisher may need licenses from platform providers to develop and publish for their hardware, and it must meet the relevant platform’s approval and distribution requirements. Take-Two Interactive’s Form 10-K for the fiscal year ended March 31, 2025, states: “We are required to obtain licenses from certain of our competitors, including Sony and Microsoft, to develop and publish titles for their respective hardware platforms.” The platform provider also controls its digital storefront and online network, so the ability to keep developing a game does not by itself guarantee that it can be newly sold or distributed on every platform.
Will the game still work if the studio closes?
That depends on which features require servers and whether another organization continues operating them. Offline play can survive after online functions end, while a game that requires online access may stop working altogether.

PlayStation Support’s notice for LittleBigPlanet 3 says its online services and access to other players’ creations are unavailable, while “Offline features such as the campaign will remain playable.” This is the stated status of that title, not a general promise about other games.

It announced that the game’s servers would close on November 30, 2022, and that purchases would be removed from Sony and Microsoft stores starting September 1, 2022. PlayStation Support also says GUNS UP! would not be playable after its shutdown because the title requires online access. These cases show why the end of online service and the loss of offline play must be checked separately for each title.

How to check the status of a specific game
- Find out who owns the game or IP. Look for an announcement from the studio, publisher, or platform holder, or a reliable rights record. Do not infer ownership from the developer credit.
- Identify who publishes and supports it now. The original publisher, a new publisher, the platform holder, or no active operator may be responsible. A studio closure alone does not answer this.
- Check sales separately from access to a copy you already own. A store listing shows whether new purchases are offered there; it does not by itself establish whether previous purchases remain downloadable. Store availability can depend on distribution agreements and platform approval.
- Check which features need servers. Determine whether the campaign or other offline modes work, whether multiplayer remains online, and whether connected features such as user-created content rely on service infrastructure.
- Read the specific announcement for what it actually changes. A studio closure, project cancellation, server shutdown, and store delisting are not interchangeable. An announcement about one should not be taken as confirmation of the others.
The available official examples do not establish a cross-industry survival rate for games after their studios leave platform holders. The practical answer has to come from the rights, publishing, store, and service status of the particular game.
