Choose a smart lock only after confirming how you can get in if its batteries die, your phone is unavailable, or a credential fails. Depending on the exact model, backup entry may mean a physical key, temporary external power, or both. These methods solve different problems, so check the model’s instructions and choose a backup your household can use.
What counts as a backup entry method?
A physical key gives you a separate way to unlock the door. Temporary external power, where supported, supplies power to a depleted lock so you can operate it using the required credential; it does not necessarily bypass a forgotten code or other credential failure.

Schlage says its electronic locks provide either a physical-key backup or a jumpstart port, depending on the model. Yale’s regional support page for the YDM4109A describes both a backup key and temporary power from a 9V battery when the lock’s AA batteries are depleted. Treat these as model-specific examples, not universal smart-lock features. Schlage backup-access guidance · Yale YDM4109A support
Compare the backup options
| Backup option | What it can help with | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Physical key | Provides a separate mechanical entry route if the electronic method is unavailable. | Whether the exact model includes a key, and how your household will keep the key accessible. |
| Temporary external power | Can power a supported lock temporarily when its installed batteries are depleted. | The exact contact point, specified battery type, and required credential. Do not assume a 9V battery works with every lock. |
| Both | Offers two distinct backup routes, as documented for Yale’s YDM4109A. | That both features apply to the exact model and regional variant you are considering. |

Check how the lock handles low batteries
Look in the product documentation for the low-battery warning method, such as an indicator on the lock or an app notification, and follow the stated battery replacement instructions. Schlage says warning features vary by model; Yale describes a low-battery notification for the cited YDM4109A. A warning gives you a chance to replace batteries, but it should not be your only plan for entry. Schlage backup-access guidance · Yale YDM4109A support
Account for key-free designs and another way into the home
Some smart locks do not have a mechanical keyway. Yale’s Assure Lever instructions distinguish the YRL226, which has a mechanical key, from the key-free YRL256, and recommend the key-free model where another entry point into the dwelling is available. That advice is specific to those models; consider whether your home has a usable alternate entrance before choosing a key-free design.

Use this checklist before buying
- Find the exact model’s manual. Confirm whether it has a physical key, an external-power connection, both, or neither; do not infer features from a product family name.
- Match the backup to the failure you want to cover. A key provides a separate physical route. Temporary power addresses depleted installed batteries on supported models, but you may still need a valid code or credential.
- Check the emergency procedure. Confirm the specified battery type and where it connects. Use an external battery only as the manufacturer’s instructions direct.
- Decide how your household will prepare. For a keyed lock, plan how an authorized household member can access the key. For temporary power, know how to obtain the specified battery when needed.
- Review alerts and maintenance directions. Check how the lock signals low battery and how its batteries are replaced; do not assume warning features are the same across models.
- Check door fit and alternate entry. Verify compatibility for your door and installation, and consider the consequences of a key-free lock if there is no other usable entrance.
The cited manuals are regional and model-specific. They do not provide a universal door-compatibility checklist, so rely on the exact product instructions for fit and installation requirements. Yale Assure Lever instructions

How to make the choice
Start with the emergency you most need to cover. If you want a mechanical fallback, verify that the exact lock includes a physical key. If you prefer a key-free design, confirm its documented emergency-power procedure and make sure another entry point is practical for your home. If you want more than one route, look for a model whose documentation confirms both. In every case, base the decision on the exact model’s instructions rather than an assumed feature shared by all smart locks.
