A confirmed stablecoin transfer is generally final on the blockchain where it was sent. What happens next depends on the transaction status, the network and token involved, and who controls the destination: your own wallet, another person, a smart contract, or an exchange. A wrong-network transfer may still be visible in a compatible wallet, but exchange recovery is governed by that platform’s rules and may not be available.
First, confirm what happened on-chain
Do not rely only on what a wallet or exchange balance screen displays. Find the transaction hash (also called a transaction ID) in the sending app’s history, then open it in a block explorer for the network you used. Check whether the transaction is pending or successful, the network, the stablecoin or token contract, and the destination address.

- If it is pending: it has not reached the same status as a confirmed transfer. Check the sending service’s transaction details and follow its guidance; do not treat an unconfirmed transfer as already lost or recovered.
- If it succeeded: the transfer has been recorded on that network. The explorer can show where the asset went, but it cannot reverse the transfer.
- If the details do not match your intent: record the hash, token, network, destination address, and status before contacting the receiving wallet or platform.
For Ethereum transactions, ethereum.org states, “A transaction sent on Ethereum is irreversible.” That guidance is specifically about Ethereum; the practical rule is to treat a confirmed on-chain transfer as final unless the destination’s controller can voluntarily return it or a platform has an applicable recovery process. An issuer or blockchain help desk should not be expected to reverse it.

What the destination means for recovery
Your own self-custody wallet
If you chose the wrong network but sent the stablecoin to an address in a wallet you control, the asset may have arrived on the network actually used. In a wallet that supports both that network and the exact token there, selecting the correct network may make the balance visible. Confirm the token contract and transaction in the explorer; a matching-looking address alone does not establish that the wallet can access the asset.

Circle’s instructions for USDC recommend switching the wallet to the network used and checking the transaction status. This is USDC-specific guidance, not a guarantee for every stablecoin, network, or wallet. Circle also says it cannot recover USDC sent to the wrong address: “If you sent USDC to the wrong address, Circle can’t recover the funds.”
Another person’s address
If a successful transfer went to an address controlled by someone else, there is no ordinary reversal. If you know the recipient, contact them and ask whether they will return the funds. That is a request for cooperation, not a technical recovery or a guarantee.

A smart contract
A transfer to a contract address may be recoverable only if the contract has a relevant recovery function or another mechanism its operators can use. Ethereum.org describes recovery from contracts as rare. Do not assume a contract’s creator or a support team can retrieve funds; first identify the contract and consult its official documentation or operator.

An exchange or other service
For a deposit sent to an exchange, the platform must support the exact asset on the network used, or provide a recovery process for that case. Some unsupported deposits may be eligible for recovery, while others may be permanently lost. Contact the receiving service through its official support channel and provide the transaction hash, asset, network, destination address, and any account details it requests. A support request is not a promise that the funds can be recovered or credited.

Coinbase is one example, not a universal rule: its documented recovery tool has eligibility limits and fees, and Coinbase says, “Coinbase can’t recover these funds” for cases outside its recovery options. Other exchanges and services set their own rules, which can change.
How to respond safely
- Verify the transaction. Locate the hash and inspect status, network, token, and destination in the relevant block explorer.
- Identify who controls the destination. Determine whether it is your wallet, a known recipient, a contract, or a centralized service.
- Use the matching route. For your own wallet, check the network and token support. For an exchange or service, open a case through its official website or app. For a known recipient, request a return.
- Keep evidence and follow the platform’s process. Share only the transaction and account information the official service requests. Do not send funds to a supposed recovery address.
- Reject unsolicited recovery offers. Never disclose your seed phrase, recovery phrase, or private key. A stranger who promises guaranteed retrieval or asks for these secrets is not a safe recovery channel.
Check network support before sending
A stablecoin name does not identify a single blockchain route. The same stablecoin may be available on multiple networks, and a wallet or exchange may support it on some networks but not others. Circle reported native USDC support on 38 blockchain networks as of September 16, 2026; that is a dated issuer statement, not a permanent count. Its supported-network list can change, and it does not establish support for other stablecoins or for every receiving platform.

- Confirm the receiving service supports the exact stablecoin on the network you plan to use.
- Compare the network selected in the sending app with the deposit network or receiving wallet’s network.
- Check that the destination address is the one supplied for that asset and network.
- For a large transfer, consider sending a small test amount first if the receiving service supports that approach.
Use the receiving wallet’s or platform’s official instructions for the specific token and network. A token appearing in an explorer does not by itself mean the recipient’s wallet interface or exchange can access or credit it.
