Neither guarantees the same visible improvement in every game; the result depends on the title and your display.
Which PS5 Pro image-quality setting should you use?
| Setting | Applies to | Default state | Compatibility and display requirements |
|---|---|---|---|
| Enhance PSSR Image Quality | PS5 games that support PSSR | On by default, according to PlayStation Support | Available on CFI-7000 model-group consoles; the game must support PSSR. Sony says results vary by game. |
| Enhance Image Quality for PS4 Games | Supported PS4 games | Must be selected by the player | Available on CFI-7000 model-group consoles and requires a screen supporting 2160p or 1440p at 60 Hz, according to PlayStation Support. |
How to check or change PSSR image quality for PS5 games
- On the PS5 Pro home screen, open Settings.
- Go to Screen and Video > Video Output.
- Select Enhance PSSR Image Quality to check or change the setting.
Sony says this option is enabled by default and is available on CFI-7000 model-group consoles. It applies only to PS5 games that support PSSR; it is not a system-wide visual upgrade for every PS5 title. Sony’s resolution support page explains the setting and video-output options.

How to enable image enhancement for PS4 games
- Open Settings.
- Choose Screen and Video > Video Output.
- Select Enhance Image Quality for PS4 Games.
This is a separate, opt-in feature for PS4 games on CFI-7000 model-group consoles. The connected screen must support 2160p or 1440p at 60 Hz. If a game behaves unexpectedly after enabling it, Sony advises turning the option off. See PlayStation’s PS4 game enhancement guidance for the stated compatibility conditions.

For PS4 titles, Sony directs players to PlayStation Store > Collections > PS5 Pro Enhanced, or to search the Store for “PS5 Pro.” For PSSR, support is title-specific. Sony’s PS5 Pro feature page lists current supported enhanced-PSSR titles, while its March 16, 2026 announcement describes the upgraded PSSR rollout and examples of games receiving support. Because the list can change, check the live PlayStation page for a particular game.

What visual improvement should you expect?
There is no single resolution, frame-rate increase, or visual result to expect across all games. Sony describes PSSR as improving image quality in certain compatible titles and says outcomes vary by game. The PS4 option is also an enhancement rather than a promise that every supported title will look identical or improve in the same way.
Sony says compatible games can reach 4K output on a 4K TV and can support up to 120 fps on a 120 Hz display. These are capabilities, not guaranteed settings for every game. Check the game’s supported modes alongside the console and display capabilities. A display upgrade is not a general prerequisite for enabling the settings; the specified 1440p or 2160p-at-60-Hz screen condition applies to the PS4 enhancement option.

In a February 27, 2026 PlayStation.Blog announcement, PS5 and PS5 Pro lead architect Mark Cerny said: “With the updated PSSR, we’re delivering the very latest of this co-developed technology with a further six months of refinement for PS5 Pro players.” That describes development of the technology, not a measurable improvement guaranteed in each game.
