If you don’t update your Android phone, known security vulnerabilities may remain unpatched, and you can miss bug fixes, app compatibility improvements, and newer Android features. Google also lists lag, slower performance, and reduced battery life as possible issues—but none is guaranteed on every device. What updates you can install, and when, depends on your phone, manufacturer, and mobile operator.
What you may miss by not updating
Security fixes
Android security updates address known vulnerabilities. If your phone has not received an available patch, it remains exposed to those known weaknesses. That increases risk; it does not mean the phone will necessarily be attacked or compromised. The security-update date shown in Settings helps you see the patch status of your device.

Bug fixes and compatibility
Updates can correct software problems and improve compatibility. As apps change, an app or one of its features may stop working on older software. The impact depends on the app and device, so there is no single outcome for all Android phones.

Skipping an Android version update means missing features included in that version. Google also identifies slower performance, lag, and reduced battery life as possible consequences of not updating. These are possibilities, not a promise that updating will make any particular phone faster or improve its battery life. Google’s Android update guidance describes these potential effects.

Android updates are not all the same
Android Settings reports the Android version, Android security update, and Google Play system update separately. They are distinct status fields, so seeing one update does not by itself establish the status of the others. Google Play services and Google system services also deliver some system, application, operating-system, and key Google-service updates. Their coverage is not identical across every component or device.
Most system updates and security patches install automatically, but you can check their status and follow the prompts to install updates that are available. Google explains the separate status fields in its Android version and update instructions, and describes the roles of Google Play services and Google system services.

How to check for updates
- Check your version and patch status: Open Settings, then About phone or About tablet, and tap Android version. Look for the Android version, Android security update, Google Play system update, and build number. Menu names may vary by device.
- Look for available software: Open Settings > System > Software updates, then follow any on-screen instructions. The exact menu path can differ by manufacturer.
- Prepare before installing: Google recommends connecting to Wi-Fi and charging the device to at least 75%. Updates can be large.
- If an update fails or does not appear: Use the device-specific troubleshooting guidance linked from Google’s update help page. A missing update notice alone does not prove that a phone is current or unsupported.
Why your phone may not have an update
Update schedules vary by device, manufacturer, and mobile operator, as Google notes in its Android update guidance. Some older devices cannot run newer Android versions. If Settings shows no update, check the manufacturer’s or carrier’s information for your exact model and service region before drawing a conclusion.

What if your phone no longer receives updates?
If your device has reached the end of its available updates, it will remain on its existing software state, with the security and compatibility limitations that entails. The sources do not establish a universal date when every owner should replace a phone. Whether to keep using it or choose another device depends on your model, the updates it still receives, how you use it, and your tolerance for the remaining risk.
