The post-IPO sequence at a glance
Closing an IPO does not immediately tell you whether you own shares or when your money will move. Several regulated steps must occur in order:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Applications are reconciled. The registrar and intermediaries process bid records and classify applications as valid, rejected, withdrawn or duplicate under the issue rules.
- The basis of allotment is finalized. The registrar, lead manager and designated stock exchange determine how the available shares are distributed within each investor category.
- Funds are transferred or unblocked. Under ASBA, the application amount remains blocked in your bank account. The amount for allotted shares is debited; any balance is released. With no allotment, the blocked amount is released in full.
- Shares are credited. Successful applicants receive electronic shares in the demat account linked to the application.
- The issue lists and trading begins. Once the exchange admits the shares, investors can generally buy and sell them during the exchange’s trading session.
These events can appear out of order in a bank app, UPI app or broker dashboard because each system updates on its own schedule. The registrar’s allotment record and the exchange’s issue information are the authoritative references for the result.
What the basis of allotment decides
The basis of allotment is the rule-based formula for distributing the shares offered in the IPO. It is prepared after valid applications are known and is approved through the issuer’s registrar, lead manager and designated stock exchange process.

Why a valid application can receive zero shares
In an oversubscribed category, more valid applications are received than shares available. Allocation is made separately within investor categories and according to the issue’s disclosed rules. A valid retail application therefore is not a guarantee of receiving the quantity requested, or of receiving any shares at all.
How retail allocation may appear
Depending on the disclosed basis, a successful retail applicant may receive the minimum lot, fewer shares than requested, or another permitted quantity. The outcome is determined by the category’s allocation method and the number of valid applications, not by the time you submitted a bid during the offer period.
Rejected, withdrawn and duplicate bids
Applications can be excluded when they fail an issue requirement, are withdrawn according to the permitted process, or are identified as duplicates. A rejected or withdrawn application does not create an allotment; any associated blocked amount should be released through the ASBA or UPI process.

Most Indian IPO applications use ASBA (Application Supported by Blocked Amount), including UPI-linked ASBA for eligible individual investors. The money is not normally sent to the issuer when you apply. Instead, your bank places a lien or block for the application amount.

SEBI’s investor-education guidance states: “Blocked amount continues to earn interest and there is no requirement of refund in case of non-allotment.” In practice, the post-allotment action is an unblocking or partial debit, not a cheque being mailed to you.
| Allotment result | What happens to the blocked amount | What you should see |
|---|---|---|
| Full allotment | The amount payable for all allotted lots is debited. | Your bank or mandate shows the debit, and the shares are credited to the linked demat account. |
| Partial allotment | Only the value of the shares actually allotted is debited; the remainder is released. | A debit smaller than the original block plus a release of the unused balance. |
| No allotment | The entire blocked amount is unblocked. | No share credit and a released mandate or lien; the timing can differ between systems. |
| Rejected or withdrawn bid | The block should be released after the application is excluded. | A mandate cancellation or lien release, subject to bank and intermediary processing. |
The blocked balance normally continues earning interest in the bank account while it is blocked. A bank statement may show a lien release rather than a separate “refund” credit. UPI applications can show a mandate as pending, revoked or completed before the bank’s available-balance display catches up.
When IPO allotment is finalized
There is no single universal clock time for every issue. The offer document and issue timetable state the intended allotment date. After bidding closes, the registrar first reconciles records, resolves valid and invalid bids, and calculates category-level demand. The basis is then finalized with the lead manager and designated exchange.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsUse the timetable in the particular issue’s offer document rather than a generic calendar found in an app. Corrections to bid data, a permitted technical exception, or a market holiday can change when the result is posted or when funds are released.

What “allotment date” means
The allotment date is the date on which the basis is finalized and the registrar can report who received shares and how many. It is not necessarily the moment your broker displays the result. Registrar systems may publish first, while a broker, bank or UPI application updates later.
Listing under SEBI’s T+3 framework
SEBI’s August 9, 2023 circular, titled “Reduction of timeline for listing of shares in Public Issue from existing T+6 days to T+3 days,” changed the standard post-issue listing schedule. Adoption was voluntary for issues opening on or after September 1, 2023 and became mandatory for issues opening on or after December 1, 2023.
| Term | Meaning | How to apply it |
|---|---|---|
| T | The issue-closing date. | Start counting from the date bidding ends, not from the date you applied. |
| T+1, T+2 and T+3 | Working days after T. | Exclude Saturdays, Sundays and applicable exchange or market holidays. |
| T+3 listing target | The current mandatory baseline for qualifying public issues. | The shares should be admitted and trading enabled by the scheduled third working day, subject to issue-specific instructions and permitted exceptions. |
| Former T+6 reference | The prior public-issue timeline cited in SEBI’s 2023 reduction circular. | It is historical context, not the current default for issues covered by the mandatory T+3 rule. |
For example, if an issue closes on a Monday and no market holiday intervenes, Tuesday is T+1, Wednesday T+2 and Thursday T+3. If a holiday falls on Wednesday, that day is not counted as a working day, so the scheduled listing moves to the next eligible working day. The issue’s published timetable controls the actual date.
Listing is separate from allotment. The shares must first be allocated and credited through the issuer’s corporate-action process; the exchange then enables trading under the listed security details. A trading debut price is determined by market orders and can be above or below the issue price. The T+3 rule sets the timetable, not the price or a profit.

How to check IPO allotment status
1. Use the registrar named in the offer document
Open the registrar’s official IPO-status page for the issue and enter the requested identifier, such as PAN, application number or demat details. The registrar supplies the allotment information, so this is the primary place to confirm the quantity allotted.
2. Check the exchange’s issue-information service
NSE’s official “Verify IPO Bid/Allotment Details” service says bid data is available from the bid-receipt date through 10 days after issue closure. Its allotment information is provided by the registrar. If an exchange page and an unofficial app label differ, rely on the registrar and exchange records rather than the app’s preliminary status.
3. Review your bank or UPI mandate
Look for the ASBA lien, UPI mandate status, debit amount or release. This confirms what happened to your funds, but it does not by itself prove the exact share quantity. A mandate can remain visible briefly after the registrar has posted the result.
4. Confirm the demat credit
After a successful allotment, check the demat account linked to the application. The credit may be visible after the allotment result and before the first trading session. Confirm the security name, quantity and credit date against the registrar’s result.

- Keep the application number, PAN, demat-client details and UPI mandate reference.
- Save a screenshot or PDF of the registrar result and the bank or mandate entry.
- Do not treat a broker notification, social-media post or unofficial tracker as final evidence.
Why your money or shares may appear late
Different participants complete different parts of the process. The registrar finalizes the basis, the bank or UPI intermediary releases or debits funds, the issuer processes the corporate action, and the depository records the shares. Their screens do not refresh simultaneously.
- Bank display lag: a lien may be released internally before the available balance is refreshed.
- UPI mandate lag: the app can continue showing a pending mandate after the bank has received the release instruction.
- Demat posting lag: the corporate-action credit may appear after the allotment page is published.
- Holiday or correction: a non-working day, corrected bid file or issue-specific technical instruction can shift the visible date.
Compare the scheduled dates in the offer document with the registrar result, bank statement and demat ledger. A short display delay is different from a missed regulatory or issue-specific deadline.
What to do when funds remain blocked
- Check the applicable date. Read the issue timetable for allotment and unblocking, counting working days correctly.
- Verify the result. Confirm whether you received full, partial or no allotment on the registrar’s official page.
- Contact the SCSB or bank first. For an ASBA application, ask the bank to trace the lien release or debit using your application details.
- Contact the UPI intermediary. For a UPI-linked mandate, provide the mandate reference and ask whether the release or debit instruction was accepted, rejected or still pending.
- Escalate to the registrar and lead manager. Use the contact details in the offer document if the intermediary cannot resolve the issue.
- Retain evidence. Keep the application number, PAN, mandate reference, bank statement entry, registrar result and all complaint numbers.
Do not cancel a valid mandate repeatedly or submit a duplicate complaint with inconsistent details; doing so can make tracing harder. Ask each intermediary to identify the transaction status and the next responsible party.
Quick Recap
Full, partial and zero allotment compared
| Question | Full allotment | Partial allotment | No allotment |
|---|---|---|---|
| Shares credited? | Yes, for the quantity approved. | Yes, but fewer than requested. | No. |
| Amount debited? | Value of all allotted shares. | Value of the smaller allotted quantity. | None for shares. |
| Amount released? | Any excess over the final payable amount. | The unused balance. | The full blocked amount. |
| Best confirmation | Registrar result plus demat credit. | Registrar quantity plus debit and released balance. | Registrar no-allotment result plus mandate release. |
Important distinctions to remember
- Application is not allotment: submitting a valid bid gives you a chance under the category rules, not a guaranteed shareholding.
- Unblocking is not a cash refund: the bank releases a temporary block; the money generally remains in your account and continues to earn interest while blocked.
- Allotment is not listing: ownership is allocated first, demat credit follows, and exchange trading starts on the scheduled listing date.
- T+3 is a working-day framework: weekends and holidays do not count, and the issue timetable remains the practical calendar to follow.
- A preliminary app status is not final: confirm the outcome with the registrar or exchange and reconcile it with your bank and demat records.
Practical checklist after every IPO closes
- Download or open the issue’s offer document and note the stated allotment, unblocking and listing dates.
- Record the issue-closing date (T) and calculate T+3 using working days.
- Keep your application number, PAN and UPI mandate reference accessible.
- Check the registrar when allotment is due, then verify the exchange information.
- Match the allotment quantity with the bank debit or release.
- Check the linked demat account for the electronic credit.
- If a deadline passes without movement, contact the bank or UPI intermediary, then the registrar and lead manager with your records.
