A Space Shuttle orbiter was not simply parked after touchdown. Landing began a controlled handover: crews checked for toxic vapors, helped the astronauts out, made the vehicle safe, connected purge and cooling equipment, and prepared it for towing. At Kennedy Space Center (KSC), the orbiter went to an Orbiter Processing Facility (OPF) for deservicing, payload removal, inspections, repairs and preparation for its next flight.
If it landed at Edwards Air Force Base in California, the immediate safety work happened there, but the orbiter normally had to be prepared for a ferry flight to Florida on a modified Boeing 747 Shuttle Carrier Aircraft. The exact order and duration varied with the landing site, mission and any time-sensitive experiments still aboard.

Landing was the beginning of ground operations
Wheelstop ended the flight phase, not the mission’s operational work. The orbiter still contained hazardous propellant residues, explosive devices, hot equipment and mission hardware that had to be handled under controlled conditions. Ground crews therefore treated the vehicle as an aircraft requiring a formal safing and handover sequence, rather than as an ordinary runway arrival.
The broad flow was consistent: assess the landing area, let the crew leave when it was safe, secure the vehicle, connect ground-support systems, move the orbiter to its processing location, remove the previous mission’s hardware, inspect and service the vehicle, and then prepare it for integration with a new launch stack.

What happened immediately after wheelstop?
1. Ground teams checked for hazards
Personnel first assessed the orbiter and the surrounding area for hazardous vapors. That check protected the crew and technicians from residual toxic propellants or other dangerous substances. No ordinary servicing or towing operation began until the area had been judged safe enough for the next step.
2. The crew exited through a controlled access point
At Edwards, the STS-30 press-kit sequence describes a mobile white room being moved to the crew hatch after the area was cleared. The astronauts could then leave roughly 45 to 50 minutes after landing in that mission’s planned operation. That interval is a mission-specific example, not a universal Shuttle rule; weather, ground equipment and vehicle condition could change the timing.
3. Technicians safed the orbiter
Safing converted a vehicle that had just completed a powered spaceflight into one that could be serviced on the ground. NASA’s technical descriptions include draining and purging propellant feedlines and removing explosive actuators. Ground crews also connected purge and cooling lines at aft umbilical panels, allowing controlled conditioning of systems while later work proceeded.
These actions were not cosmetic cleanup. They reduced the risk from trapped chemicals, pressure, electrical energy and pyrotechnic hardware before technicians opened access panels or began detailed inspections.
How the landing site changed the next move
| Landing site | Immediate path | Where major post-flight processing occurred |
|---|---|---|
| Kennedy Space Center | After safing, a tractor tow vehicle pulled the orbiter from the Shuttle Landing Facility. | An Orbiter Processing Facility at Kennedy. |
| Edwards Air Force Base, California | After local safing, the orbiter was prepared for a ferry flight on a modified Boeing 747 Shuttle Carrier Aircraft. | Kennedy, after the cross-country ferry, for normal post-flight processing. |
A Kennedy landing avoided the ferry step. An Edwards landing added a separate transportation operation because the principal processing facilities and launch infrastructure were in Florida. NASA’s historical ferry-flight material describes the orbiter being carried on top of the modified 747, after which it re-entered the Kennedy processing flow.

How quickly was a Kennedy orbiter towed?
NASA’s Discovery processing fact sheet gives a normal towing window: the move from the runway area generally began within four hours of landing and was completed within six hours. That is a stated operating norm for the described processing context, not a guarantee for every mission.
There was a practical exception. If time-sensitive experiments had to be removed immediately, teams could take them off on the runway before the orbiter completed its move to the OPF. This illustrates why the ground schedule was driven by mission hardware as well as by the vehicle itself.

The OPF was the orbiter’s main post-flight workshop. Work was organized around making the vehicle safe, determining what needed attention, and returning it to a flight-ready configuration.
Deservicing and hazardous-material removal
Teams removed residual fuels and explosive materials and completed the other deservicing steps required before extensive maintenance. The aim was to eliminate or control hazards left from launch, orbital maneuvering, re-entry and landing.
Payload removal
The previous mission’s payload was unloaded. That could include experiments, satellites, deployment hardware or other mission-specific equipment. Payload work was not necessarily postponed until every vehicle task was complete; NASA descriptions state that payload removal and vehicle servicing could proceed in parallel when the work areas and safety controls allowed it.

Inspection, testing and fault investigation
Technicians inspected the orbiter’s structure, thermal-protection surfaces, landing gear, propulsion-related systems, avionics and other equipment. They tested systems to find damage or abnormal behavior that was not visible during a quick post-landing check. The results determined whether a component could remain in service, required repair, or needed refurbishment or replacement.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesRepair and refurbishment
Maintenance teams repaired defects and refurbished systems as needed. This could range from replacing a component to restoring a subsystem for another flight. Processing therefore did not follow a single fixed checklist with identical labor for every mission; the vehicle’s condition and the next mission’s requirements changed the work package.
Installing equipment for the next mission
Once the prior payload was removed and the orbiter’s condition was understood, teams installed and checked the equipment needed for the upcoming flight. NASA’s processing descriptions emphasize that servicing, inspection, maintenance and payload preparation overlapped rather than occurring as one rigid, serial line.
How long did turnaround take?
A 1976 NASA design-era report described a two-week ground-turnaround objective and estimated approximately 160 hours of actual work. Those figures were engineering targets and estimates from the Shuttle’s design period, not a statement that every orbiter historically flew again after exactly 14 days.
| Figure | What it means | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Two weeks | Planned ground-turnaround objective for the orbiter. | Design-era target from a 1976 NASA report; not a universal operational result. |
| About 160 hours | Estimated hands-on work in that same planning report. | 1976 estimate, not a measured average for all Shuttle missions. |
| About two-thirds of processing time | Servicing, maintenance, inspection and refurbishment. | Allocation stated in the 1976 report; the remainder was for installing and checking the next payload. |
| Within four to six hours | Normal start and completion window for the described tow from the landing facility. | NASA processing-fact-sheet timing, with exceptions such as runway removal of time-sensitive experiments. |
The distinction between “actual work” and elapsed turnaround matters. A vehicle can spend more calendar time in a facility than the sum of technician hours because tasks are scheduled around access, inspections, equipment availability, safety holds and payload operations. Conversely, several teams can work at once, so elapsed time is not simply the hours of every worker added together.

How the orbiter became part of the next launch vehicle
After OPF processing, the orbiter was not launched directly from its processing bay. NASA’s design-era turnaround sequence called for towing it to the Vehicle Assembly Building (VAB). There it was raised to a vertical position and mated, on a mobile launcher platform, with the solid rocket boosters and external tank that had already been prepared.
Once the orbiter, tank and boosters formed the integrated Shuttle, the complete vehicle was moved to the launch pad. This was the transition from stand-alone orbiter maintenance to launch-vehicle assembly. Payload installation and testing for the next mission were part of the broader preparation flow, but the final stack had to pass its own integration and launch-readiness checks before rollout and launch.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Where was an orbiter kept while waiting for stacking?
For the main post-flight period, the answer was the OPF at Kennedy. The building provided protected work stands, access platforms, servicing connections and the specialized equipment needed to inspect and prepare the orbiter. After processing, the vehicle moved to the VAB for vertical mating rather than remaining indefinitely in the OPF.
The timing of that move depended on the work package and the readiness of the next mission’s hardware. The OPF was therefore a processing location, not simply a storage hangar. An orbiter could be present there while technicians performed maintenance, while payload specialists prepared mission equipment, and while planners coordinated the next stack.
How were orbiters picked for missions?
The post-landing processing descriptions do not provide a universal public rule for assigning a particular orbiter to every mission. They explain what happened to whichever orbiter had returned, not the separate mission-planning process used to select an orbiter before launch.
Best Value
That distinction prevents a common misunderstanding: the OPF workflow was not where an orbiter was casually chosen from a parking line after landing. Mission assignment, vehicle condition, required capabilities and scheduling were handled as planning decisions, while the OPF converted the assigned vehicle from its previous mission into the configuration required for the next one.
What changed after the Shuttle program ended?
NASA’s Kennedy facility information records later reuse of Shuttle-era infrastructure. Orbiter Processing Facility 3 became the Commercial Crew and Cargo Processing Facility (C3PF) through a partnership with Space Florida, while Bays 1 and 2 have a partnership with the U.S. Space Force.
Those current facility-use statements describe later occupants and partnerships; they should not be read as evidence that Shuttle orbiters still undergo the historical turnaround process there. The Space Shuttle fleet is no longer flying, so its former post-landing workflow is a record of the retired program rather than a current servicing procedure.
Common misconceptions about a landed orbiter
“It was ready for maintenance as soon as the wheels stopped.”
No. Hazard checks, crew egress and safing came first. Propellant lines, explosive devices and ground-support connections had to be addressed before normal processing could begin.
“Every orbiter returned directly to Florida.”
No. Orbiters that landed at Edwards required preparation for transport on the Shuttle Carrier Aircraft before entering the Kennedy processing flow.
“The two-week figure describes every real turnaround.”
No. The two-week objective and 160-hour estimate came from a 1976 design report. They are useful for understanding the planned concept, but they are not a universal measured schedule for all missions.
“Payload work waited until the orbiter was completely serviced.”
Not necessarily. NASA describes payload removal and installation work occurring alongside servicing and maintenance when operations could safely overlap.

- Wheelstop and hazard assessment: Ground personnel checked for dangerous vapors and secured the area.
- Crew egress: A mobile white room or equivalent access arrangement allowed astronauts to leave once conditions were acceptable.
- Vehicle safing: Technicians drained and purged relevant lines, controlled hazardous systems and removed explosive actuators as required.
- Ground support: Purge and cooling lines were connected at the aft umbilical panels.
- Transportation: A Kennedy landing led to a tow; an Edwards landing led to preparation for a 747 ferry flight to Florida.
- OPF processing: Residual fuels and explosives were removed, the previous payload was unloaded, and the orbiter was inspected, tested, repaired and refurbished.
- Next-mission preparation: New payload equipment and mission-specific systems were installed and checked, often in parallel with vehicle work.
- Launch-stack integration: The processed orbiter was moved to the VAB, raised vertical, mated with the solid rocket boosters and external tank, and transported to the launch pad.
In practical terms, landing handed the orbiter from flight operations to an industrial processing system. The vehicle was made safe, examined in detail, restored and reconfigured before it could become part of another Shuttle launch.
