How to Switch Characters in GTA 5 on PC, PlayStation, and Xbox

Switch GTA 5 Story Mode protagonists by holding Down on a controller or Alt on the default PC keyboard setup, highlighting a character, and releasing the control. GTA Online characters use separate management menus.

To switch protagonists in Grand Theft Auto V, you must be in Story Mode. Hold the game’s character-switch control to open the Character Wheel, highlight an available protagonist, and release the control. Rockstar’s defaults are Down on the controller D-pad and Alt on a PC keyboard. The same controller procedure works on PlayStation, Xbox, and a PC gamepad.

What the character switch actually does

GTA V Story Mode follows three playable protagonists. The Character Wheel lets you move from the protagonist you are controlling to another protagonist who is currently available in the story. It is a gameplay switch, not a way to change your appearance, restart a mission, or select a GTA Online profile.

The wheel is available for Story Mode protagonists. GTA Online uses separate character-management flows, so the Story Mode wheel does not switch between your online characters. Rockstar’s support documentation treats Online character management separately for Enhanced and Legacy versions.

Default controls on every supported input

Platform or input Default control Selection sequence
PlayStation 4 or PlayStation 5 controller Hold Down on the D-pad Hold Down, move the right stick to an available character, then release Down.
Xbox One or Xbox Series X|S controller Hold Down on the D-pad Hold Down, move the right stick to an available character, then release Down.
PC keyboard Hold Alt Hold Alt to open the wheel, highlight an available character, then release Alt.
PC with a controller Hold Down on the D-pad Use the controller sequence: hold Down, highlight with the right stick, and release Down.

These are the documented default bindings. If you or another player changed the control scheme, the key or button shown in your Controls settings takes priority over the factory default.

How to switch characters in Story Mode

PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5

  1. Load a Story Mode save and wait until you have normal control of the current protagonist.
  2. Press and hold Down on the D-pad. A character-selection wheel appears while the button remains held.
  3. Keep holding Down and move the right stick toward the protagonist you want to play.
  4. Check that the intended character is highlighted rather than merely moving the camera or changing your aim.
  5. Release Down to confirm the highlighted choice. The game then transitions to that protagonist when the story allows the switch.

A quick tap is not the same as a switch. The wheel is a hold action: Down must remain pressed while you make the selection.

Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S

  1. Enter Story Mode and make sure the game is accepting regular gameplay input.
  2. Hold Down on the D-pad to bring up the Character Wheel.
  3. Use the right stick to highlight the available protagonist you want.
  4. Release Down after the correct segment of the wheel is highlighted.

The button layout differs between PlayStation and Xbox controllers, but the relevant input is the same D-pad direction: Down. Do not substitute the left stick for the D-pad; the left stick is not the documented default switch control.

PC with a keyboard and mouse

  1. Start or load Story Mode.
  2. Press and hold Alt, the default keyboard binding for the character switch.
  3. While holding Alt, choose an available protagonist from the wheel. Use the selection input shown by your current keyboard and mouse configuration.
  4. Release Alt to confirm the highlighted character.

If Alt does not open the wheel, do not assume the feature is broken. The key may have been reassigned, or the game may not be in Story Mode. Check the active control profile before changing other settings.

PC with a controller

When a gamepad is connected to a PC, use the controller binding rather than the keyboard binding: hold Down on the D-pad, highlight a character with the right stick, and release Down. This is the same input sequence used by console controllers.

Choosing the correct character

The wheel only lets you select a character who is available at that moment. The highlighted segment is the choice that will be confirmed when you release the switch control. If the protagonist you expect is not selectable, move the stick around the wheel once and look for which segments respond. A dimmed or unavailable segment cannot be selected through the normal wheel action.

Keep the switch control held throughout the selection. Releasing it before the intended segment is highlighted can confirm a different choice, cancel the interaction, or simply leave you controlling the current protagonist depending on the game state and input timing.

Story Mode and GTA Online are different systems

Story Mode protagonists

The Character Wheel described above belongs to the single-player Story Mode system. It changes which Story Mode protagonist you control within the shared campaign.

GTA Online characters

Your GTA Online characters are managed through Online-specific menus and account flows, not by using the Story Mode protagonist wheel. If you want to use a different Online character, leave the assumption that the wheel will do it: use the character-management option provided by your version of GTA Online instead.

Rockstar distinguishes Online character-management behavior between Enhanced and Legacy versions. That distinction matters when you are looking for deletion or other account-level options, but it does not turn the Story Mode wheel into an Online character selector.

  • Experience the world of Grand Theft Auto V like never before with the power of the PlayStation 4.
  • Explore the City of Los Santos, the countryside and even the ocean.
  • Play through an epic single player experience using three very different characters.
  • Join your friends in GTA Online and see what trouble you can cause.
  • Play golf, tennis, see a film or call someone and just hang out.

Why the distinction prevents common mistakes

  • A Story Mode save contains campaign protagonists; an Online profile contains characters tied to the online service.
  • The same copy of GTA V can expose both modes, but each mode has its own character controls.
  • Seeing an Online character in a menu does not mean that character will appear on the Story Mode wheel.
  • If you are in an Online session, pressing the Story Mode switch input is not a substitute for opening Online character management.

What to check when switching does not work

1. Confirm the game mode

First verify that the current session is Story Mode. The protagonist wheel is not the control for changing GTA Online characters. If the game has placed you in an Online session, use the Online menus instead of repeatedly pressing the Story Mode binding.

2. Verify the configured binding

Open the game’s pause menu, go to Settings, and inspect the Controls section for the action named for switching characters. Compare the displayed binding with the input you are pressing. A customized profile can replace Alt on keyboard or Down on a controller.

  • On keyboard, look for the current key assigned to the character-switch action rather than assuming it is still Alt.
  • On a controller, check the D-pad assignment and the active controller profile.
  • If more than one input device is connected to a PC, confirm which device the game is currently reading.

3. Hold the input instead of tapping it

The wheel is opened by holding the switch control. A brief press may not display the wheel, especially if you release the button before moving the selection. Keep the button or key held until the desired segment is highlighted, then release it to confirm.

4. Use the right stick for controller selection

On a controller, Down opens and keeps the wheel active; the right stick moves the highlight. If you hold Down but use the wrong stick, you may not move the selection at all. Return the right stick to neutral, hold Down again, and deliberately move toward the intended segment.

5. Check whether the game is accepting normal gameplay input

Try the procedure when you have direct control of the protagonist and the game is not waiting for another menu command. If the wheel still does not appear, return to the Controls settings and verify the binding before concluding that the feature is unavailable.

6. Remember that availability can vary by game state

Some moments in a game can restrict ordinary actions, and the reviewed Rockstar material does not provide a complete, authoritative list of every situation that prevents switching. Therefore, do not treat a temporarily unavailable wheel as proof that your controller or keyboard is defective. Test the configured binding again after returning to a normal Story Mode segment.

A reliable input checklist

  • Mode: Story Mode, not GTA Online.
  • Binding: the current Switch Characters action in Settings > Controls.
  • Controller: hold D-pad Down and move the right stick.
  • Keyboard: hold the configured keyboard key; Alt is the default.
  • Confirmation: release the held switch control only after the intended character is highlighted.
  • Availability: select a protagonist the wheel presents as available.

Examples of the complete procedure

From one Story Mode protagonist to another on PlayStation

Suppose you are controlling one protagonist with a PlayStation controller. Keep the game in Story Mode, hold D-pad Down, move the right stick to the other available protagonist, and release Down. The important timing is that the D-pad remains held during the right-stick movement.

Using a changed keyboard binding on PC

If you reassigned the switch action from Alt to another key, the procedure is unchanged: hold the key shown in Controls, highlight the desired available protagonist, and release that key. Alt is only the documented default, not a requirement after customization.

Playing on PC with a gamepad

A PC installation does not automatically make the keyboard command the right choice. If you are holding a controller, follow the controller path: D-pad Down opens the wheel, the right stick selects, and releasing Down confirms.

How the controls differ by device

Question Keyboard on PC Controller on PC, PlayStation, or Xbox
What opens the wheel? Hold the configured keyboard key; Alt is the default. Hold D-pad Down.
How do you move the highlight? Use the selection input displayed for the keyboard setup. Move the right stick.
How do you confirm? Release the held switch key. Release D-pad Down.
Does the platform change the Story Mode concept? No. The wheel remains a Story Mode protagonist selector. No. The controller default is shared across the listed platforms.

Before you try: mode, edition, and input requirements

You need access to GTA V Story Mode and a functioning keyboard or controller recognized by the game. The character wheel is not a feature of an Online-only session. If you own or launch only the standalone GTA Online product, you must use its Online menus; the Story Mode wheel becomes relevant only after Story Mode is available and loaded.

No special controller, adapter, headset, or replacement part is required. The documented action uses the standard D-pad on a controller or the configured keyboard key on PC. A physical copy or digital edition is simply a way to own the game; existing players do not need to buy an accessory to switch protagonists.

On PC, avoid testing both devices at once while diagnosing a problem. Decide whether you are using the keyboard or gamepad, then follow that device’s binding. A connected controller can make it easy to press Alt while expecting a controller response, or to press D-pad Down while the active profile is reading keyboard input.

Timing details that prevent accidental selections

Think of the switch as one continuous gesture rather than three unrelated button presses. First hold the switch control, then move the selection input while continuing to hold it, and finally release only when the desired character is highlighted. Letting go between those stages is the most common timing error.

On a controller, D-pad Down has two jobs in sequence: it opens the wheel and keeps it open. The right stick then moves the highlight. The left stick, camera movement, or ordinary aiming input does not replace that right-stick selection step. On keyboard, keep Alt—or your remapped key—depressed while making the wheel selection shown by your current setup.

After release, allow the transition to finish before pressing the switch control again. If the story does not permit the selected protagonist at that moment, return to ordinary play and try again later rather than rapidly repeating the input.

Remapping the control without losing track of it

Custom controls are supported, but they change the answer to “which button do I press?” Open Settings and Controls, locate the action for switching characters, and note its current assignment before leaving the menu. Use that displayed assignment in place of Alt or D-pad Down.

Record the input separately for each device if you alternate between keyboard and controller. A keyboard profile can show one key while the gamepad profile retains the controller action. If a newly assigned key conflicts with another command, choose an unused binding and test it in a normal Story Mode segment.

When helping another player, give the action name as well as the default input: “Switch Characters” is more useful than saying only “press Alt,” because the player may have changed the layout or be using a non-default profile.

Limits of what the wheel can select

The wheel is not a complete roster screen. It presents the protagonists available to the current Story Mode state. An unavailable segment is not evidence that the save is damaged, that the character was deleted, or that the player needs to purchase anything. It means the normal wheel action does not offer that selection at that moment.

Likewise, the wheel does not move progress between separate saves, alter which Online character owns property, or convert an Online avatar into a campaign protagonist. Those are different systems and require their own menus or save data.

What Rockstar’s documentation establishes

Rockstar Games Customer Support’s article on recording clips and accessing the Rockstar Editor, updated April 26, 2024, identifies the default switch input as D-pad Down for a controller and Alt for a keyboard. That article is useful for confirming the control identity even though its main subject is recording and editing gameplay.

Rockstar’s Story Mode purchase support article, updated May 1, 2024, refers to bringing up the Character Wheel with Down on the D-pad and selecting a Story Mode character. Its wording reinforces that the wheel is tied to Story Mode.

Rockstar’s Online character-management article, updated June 18, 2025, separates Online character operations from Story Mode controls and distinguishes Enhanced and Legacy versions. That separation is why an Online character change should not be attempted through the protagonist wheel.

A secondary guide published September 5, 2026, corroborates the practical controller gesture: hold the control, use the right stick to highlight a character, and release. Treat the platform-specific selection movement as supporting guidance while relying on the Rockstar documentation for the default button identity.

Common misconceptions

“The wheel should change my Online character.”

It should not. The wheel switches Story Mode protagonists. Online characters use their own management flow.

“I need a special accessory.”

You do not need a replacement controller or other accessory for the documented action. Use the keyboard or controller already configured for the game, and check the binding if the input differs from the default.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“A single press of Down should be enough.”

The documented action is a hold. Keep Down pressed while selecting, then release to confirm.

“PC always means Alt.”

Alt is the default keyboard binding, not an unchangeable rule. Customized controls can assign the action elsewhere, and a PC gamepad follows the controller binding.

Fast reference

You are playing with Do this
PlayStation controller Hold D-pad Down → move right stick to a character → release Down.
Xbox controller Hold D-pad Down → move right stick to a character → release Down.
PC keyboard Hold Alt, unless Controls shows a customized key → highlight a character → release.
PC controller Use the controller sequence: hold D-pad Down → right stick → release Down.

If that sequence fails, the two highest-value checks are mode and binding: return to Story Mode and verify the current Switch Characters assignment in Settings > Controls.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I switch characters in GTA Online with the Story Mode wheel?

No. The wheel changes Story Mode protagonists. GTA Online characters are handled through Online-specific menus, with options that can differ between Enhanced and Legacy versions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What is the default character-switch button on PC?

Hold Alt on the default PC keyboard layout, highlight an available protagonist, and release Alt. If the binding was changed, use the key shown in Settings > Controls.

What button switches characters on PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S?

Hold Down on the controller D-pad, move the right stick to the desired available character, and release Down.

Why does pressing Down once do nothing?

Character switching is a hold action. Keep Down pressed while moving the right stick and release only after the intended segment is highlighted.

Can I use a controller on PC?

Yes. A PC gamepad uses the controller sequence: hold D-pad Down, select with the right stick, and release Down. Alt applies to the keyboard default.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why is a protagonist missing from my wheel?

The wheel only presents characters available in the current Story Mode state. Try again during a normal gameplay segment; the documented material does not provide a complete list of every temporary restriction.

Do I need a special accessory or replacement controller?

No. The documented switch uses your configured keyboard or controller. Check the active binding before buying or changing hardware.

Where do I check a changed switch control?

Pause the game, open Settings, select Controls, and find the action for switching characters. Use the assignment displayed for the device you are currently using.

The Bottom Line

In Story Mode, hold Down on a controller or Alt on the default PC keyboard, highlight an available protagonist, and release the held control. The same D-pad procedure works on PlayStation, Xbox, and a PC gamepad. If it fails, verify that you are in Story Mode and check the current Switch Characters binding in Settings > Controls. GTA Online characters use separate management menus.
