Google Docs can use Markdown for selected formatting and file workflows: you can paste Markdown into a document, copy Docs content as Markdown, download a Doc as an .md file, and open Markdown files in Docs for editing and collaboration. It is not a guarantee that every Docs feature will carry over: smart chips, HTML formatting, font colours, highlights, and text alignment can change or be removed.
What Markdown support in Google Docs includes
Google’s documented support covers a defined set of formatting and conversion actions, rather than every Markdown extension or every object available in Docs. The listed formatting includes italics, bold, strikethrough, links, and headings through level six. Markdown can be enabled or disabled on a computer in Tools > Preferences. Formatting syntax Google documents
- Italics: surround text with one asterisk or underscore, such as
*italic*or_italic_. - Bold: use two asterisks or underscores, such as
**bold**or__bold__. - Bold italics: use three markers around the text.
- Strikethrough: surround text with tildes.
- Headings: begin a paragraph with one to six
#characters followed by a space. - Links: put the link text in square brackets, immediately followed by the URL in parentheses.
These examples describe the syntax Google lists; they should not be read as a promise that every Markdown dialect or feature will be interpreted identically.
How to move Markdown into or out of a Google Doc
The right workflow depends on whether you are bringing selected Markdown into an existing document, exporting Docs content, or opening a Markdown file as the working document.

Paste Markdown into an existing Doc
- On a computer, copy the Markdown text you want to use.
- Open the target document in Google Docs and right-click where the content should go.
- Select Paste from Markdown.
This is a specific paste command, distinct from ordinary paste. Google documents it as a way to apply the supported Markdown formatting to the pasted content. Google Docs Editors Help
Copy selected Docs content as Markdown
- Select the content in the Google Doc.
- Right-click the selection and choose Copy as Markdown.
- Paste the result into the destination that accepts Markdown.
This exports the selected content in Markdown form; it does not turn the whole Doc into a Markdown file on Drive.

Download a Google Doc as an .md file
- Open the Doc.
- Choose File > Download > Markdown (.md).
- Save or move the downloaded file to the application or location where you need it.
This creates a downloadable Markdown file for use elsewhere. Google’s documented workflow does not imply that all Docs-specific formatting will be represented in it.
Open a Markdown file through Docs or Drive
You can upload or open a Markdown file through Docs or Drive and edit it in Docs. Google says the file remains an .md file in Drive rather than converting into a Google Docs file. How collaboration works on an .md file
Google says Markdown files can be shared and worked on with others using sharing and comments. Google’s wording is explicit: “Important: Your file does not convert to a Google Docs file. It stays as an .md file, kept in Drive. Google Docs is an editor where you can see the final format and work with others.” Google Docs Editors Help
That distinction matters when choosing a workflow: an .md file remains Markdown in Drive, while collaborators use Docs as the editor. For general Docs collaboration, Google also documents adding, editing, replying to, filtering, and deleting comments, as well as assigning tasks and action items. What may change or disappear in Markdown
Markdown represents formatting differently from the full range of Google Docs features. Google warns that some Docs elements can be altered or lost when content is represented in an .md file:
- Smart chips can change to plain text or links.
- HTML formatting becomes plain text.
- Font colours and highlights are removed.
- Text alignment is removed.
Google points users to Version history to restore the original when a conversion or editing change is not what they intended. Markdown support is useful when the work depends on basic text structure and portable formatting. If the document’s meaning or presentation depends on smart chips, colour, highlighting, alignment, or web formatting, keep the original Doc available and inspect the Markdown version before treating it as equivalent.
