Start with a forgiving beginner set that covers the main shots: a driver, a fairway wood or hybrid, a few irons, a wedge and a putter. You do not need to buy all 14 clubs allowed under the Rules of Golf at once. Choose a package with the clubs and fit options you need, or begin with a smaller or used set while you decide how much you want to play.
Which clubs belong in a beginner set?
A typical beginner package contains about nine to eleven clubs, according to Golf Monthly’s June 5, 2026 guide. The exact mix varies, so check the contents rather than relying on the word “complete” or assuming every set includes the same clubs.

- Driver: for tee shots where you want distance.

A more recent set may use a hybrid in place of a fairway wood or include a different selection of irons.

Prioritize clubs that are manageable to hit and fit your needs, rather than trying to match a skilled player’s full bag. Golf Monthly’s guide highlights forgiveness and set makeup as key considerations.

Forgiveness and launch
Beginner-friendly clubs commonly have larger heads and larger sweet spots, which can help when contact is off-center. If possible, try a few options and pay attention to whether you can launch the ball comfortably.
Contents and distance gaps
Check which woods, hybrids, irons and wedges are included. The clubs should give you useful choices for different distances, without requiring you to buy every possible loft or club type on day one.

Fit and handedness
Confirm right- or left-handed availability, shaft options, club length and grip. Your height, physical needs and swing affect what feels appropriate, so a general beginner recommendation cannot identify the right specifications for every player. The PGA guide recommends trying equipment before purchase and points to a PGA Professional who can fit clubs as a resource.

Bag and construction
Check whether the package includes a bag you can use and whether the clubs seem well made enough for regular play. A low price alone is not a good reason to choose a set if its construction or fit is questionable.

Budget and examples
Golf Monthly’s June 5, 2026 guide gives a general beginner-package range of $200 to $1,000. That is a broad guide, not a live quote for a particular set. Its named examples include Callaway XR 26, Strata Men’s Golf Package Set, TaylorMade RBZ SpeedLite and Wilson Prostaff SGI. Treat these as options to investigate, not a universal ranking; check the current configuration, handedness, shaft choices, availability and price before buying.

If your budget is limited, prioritize lessons over an expensive custom fitting while you are still learning to make consistent contact. Golf Monthly suggests that a novice may get more early value from instruction and consider a tailored set later, as their swing develops. You can still try clubs and ask for basic fit advice before buying. The PGA of America Coaching Center at PGA Frisco advertises beginner classes covering fundamentals such as holding and swinging a club; local programs and availability vary.

Do you need all 14 clubs?
No. The PGA of America’s 2008 guide says a golfer may carry up to 14 clubs and can configure the set as they choose, subject to that limit. Fourteen is a maximum, not a shopping target. Add specialized clubs only if you learn that they fill a useful gap in your game. For competition-specific questions, consult the current Rules of Golf.
