Use a laser rangefinder if you want to measure to a specific visible flag or other target. Neither is best for every golfer; choose based on the distance information you actually use and how you prefer to get it.
How a GPS watch differs from a laser rangefinder
A GPS watch uses satellite positioning and course maps to show distances to green areas and other mapped course features. Depending on the model, that can include distances to the front, middle and back of the green. The watch provides course-wide information without requiring you to aim at each target, but its coverage and features vary by device. Garmin explains the distinction in its overview of distance-measuring devices.

A laser rangefinder measures the distance to the flag or another object you point it at. You have to aim the device and take a reading, but the result is specific to that visible target rather than a mapped point on the green. Garmin describes this as an exact measurement to the targeted flag or object; that is the manufacturer’s explanation, not an independent accuracy test. Golf Monthly’s May 25, 2025 comparison likewise frames lasers around pin distance and GPS around front, middle and back green distances, rather than reporting a controlled test of accuracy.

Which one fits the way you play?
Choose a GPS watch for hands-free mapped distances
- You want to check distances quickly without taking out and aiming a separate device.
- You use front, middle and back green distances or other mapped course information.
- You have confirmed that the watch supports the courses you play and offers the features you need.
Choose a laser for a specific visible target
- You want a reading to a particular flag, tree or other visible object.
- You are comfortable pointing the rangefinder and taking a measurement when needed.
- You value target-specific measurement more than having mapped distances readily available around the course.
Compare practical use, not a claimed universal winner
Before choosing, consider what each device measures, how much effort it takes to get a reading, what course information it displays and whether its functions can be configured for competition. Some golfers use GPS for general distances and a laser when they want a particular flag or target; that is one practical approach, not a requirement to buy both.

What to check before using either in competition
Under the Rules of Golf, distance-measuring devices are permitted only when the relevant local rule is in effect. When that rule applies, the device must be limited to measuring distance. Prohibited functions can include measuring slope, wind or temperature, as well as giving club, shot or green-reading advice. The USGA and The R&A joint statement and the USGA distance-measuring device FAQ explain these limits. Check the local rules for your specific event, then confirm that any prohibited functions are switched off.
Some rangefinders offer slope-adjusted distances alongside a tournament mode. For example, Bushnell’s Tour V7 Shift product page describes both features. The presence of a tournament mode does not establish whether a particular device or feature is allowed in every event: follow that competition’s rules and make sure the device is in a compliant mode.

What the comparison does—and does not—establish
The choice is about the kind of distance information and interaction you prefer: mapped course distances at a glance or a measurement to a target you select. The cited sources do not establish a comparative statistic for accuracy, adoption, scoring impact or typical price, so there is no basis here to say that either device is more likely to lower your score or is universally more accurate.
