On Android, Google’s Gemini can answer questions, help with writing and planning, interpret images and some on-screen content, use certain connected apps, and perform selected phone actions. It is not a universal controller for every app or a guaranteed replacement for every Google Assistant feature. What works depends on the phone, account, language, location, permissions, and feature rollout. [Google’s Android Gemini help]
What Gemini is useful for on Android
Questions, explanations, writing, and planning
Gemini can help draft or revise text, brainstorm, explain topics, support learning, provide quick information, summarize some information in Gmail or Drive, and help with plans. It accepts text, voice, images, and camera input. Google also lists planning with Maps and Flights and identifying a song that is playing among its Android assistant uses. Availability can depend on the specific feature and setup. [Google’s Android Gemini help]

Photos, camera input, and screen content
You can ask questions about a photo or use the camera to ask about your surroundings. On Android, Gemini can also respond to questions about content on screen—for example, asking for a webpage summary or about something shown in a picture. This is not unrestricted access to everything on the phone: the interaction depends on the context you provide and the feature’s permissions and availability. [Google’s Android Gemini help]
Which phone actions and apps it can use
Connected apps and quick voice actions
Depending on setup, Gemini can connect with services including Gmail, Drive, Maps, and YouTube-related services. Google also describes quick voice actions such as sending a message or turning on lights, and routines when Google Home is connected. Support is not universal: some routine starters and actions are unavailable, including multi-step exchanges that require follow-up questions. [Google’s Android Gemini help]

Calls and messages
With the Phone app and relevant settings configured, Gemini can be used to call contacts, businesses, or phone numbers. Calls and messages from the lock screen are also possible if the relevant lock-screen setting is enabled. Phone actions can require an active phone plan, contact settings, and permissions. An important limitation: the Phone app in Gemini cannot currently accept or reject calls; some other actions may instead be handled by Google Assistant. [Google’s Gemini Phone app help]
Multi-step tasks on selected phones
Gemini can attempt tasks across selected apps, such as ordering groceries, making reservations, or shopping, but this is a limited capability—not a promise that any task or transaction will work. Google’s February 25, 2026 announcement described a beta for ride booking and food reordering, initially on Pixel 10 and Samsung Galaxy S26 series devices in the U.S. and Korea, using select food, grocery, and rideshare apps. Google said the apps run in a secure virtual window, with progress shown through notifications, and users can view, interrupt, or stop the task. [Google’s February 25, 2026 announcement]

Google’s current Gemini Intelligence information describes broader examples such as ordering groceries, making reservations, and shopping on select Android apps, while listing device, country, language, permission, and feature restrictions. Because availability and supported apps can change, check the current eligibility information for your device and region rather than assuming the beta’s original scope—or a feature shown elsewhere—applies to your phone. What Gemini cannot do reliably or universally
- It does not support every Assistant feature. Google identifies interpreter mode and support for podcasts, news, radio stations, and some third-party music providers among gaps in the Gemini mobile assistant experience. The list may change as features roll out. [Google’s Gemini mobile assistant feature comparison]
- It cannot carry out every routine action. An action may be unsupported, particularly when it needs a back-and-forth clarification. [Google’s Android Gemini help]
- It is not a general-purpose app automation tool. Multi-step tasks are limited to selected apps and compatible device and regional combinations; users should monitor them and intervene when needed. [Google’s Gemini Intelligence help]
- Availability is not identical for every user. “Hey Google,” Voice Match, and some assistant features vary by country and language. Supervised accounts and some work or school accounts may also lack features powered by Google Assistant. [Google’s Gemini mobile assistant feature comparison]
What you need to use Gemini as your Android assistant
Google’s setup guidance says the Google app must be set as the default assist app, and you need a signed-in Google account with Gemini access on an eligible device and supported language and location. Specific actions may also require connected-app setup, phone permissions, location or system preferences, or account settings. Basic Gemini app availability should not be confused with eligibility for advanced Gemini Intelligence features. [Google’s Android Gemini help]

For Gemini Intelligence, Google currently lists selected Pixel 11 and Samsung Galaxy Z Fold8/Flip8 models, with hardware conditions that include at least 12 GB of RAM and a qualified system-on-chip. These requirements apply to the specified advanced features, not to every basic Gemini function; check Google’s current page for supported models and other limits. [Google’s Gemini Intelligence help]
Google Assistant is transitioning on mobile
Google’s August 6, 2026 community announcement said removal of Google Assistant on mobile would begin September 3 and take a few weeks to reach users. It described the change as affecting phones and paired-device experiences such as Wear OS watches, compatible earbuds, and Android Auto projected from a phone. The announcement said Google Assistant on Google Home and Nest speakers and displays was not affected by that mobile change. The rollout was described as taking place over several weeks, so the change should not be read as proof that every user has already transitioned. [Google’s August 6, 2026 community announcement]

Permissions and control for advanced actions
Gemini Intelligence features may rely on app permissions, location settings, and system preferences; Google says permissions and privacy preferences can be managed individually. Google’s May 12, 2026 security post presents explicit user control, data protection, and operational transparency as design principles. These are Google’s stated controls and principles, not an independent assessment of privacy or security. [Google’s Gemini Intelligence help] [Google’s May 12, 2026 security and privacy post]
