How to Tell Which CPU Temperature Reading Your Fans Are Responding To

Check the selected source for the exact fan header, then match it to the sensor label in your monitoring app. RPM by itself cannot reveal which temperature the fan follows.

Check the temperature source assigned to the specific fan header in BIOS/UEFI or the software currently controlling it. Match that source to the exact sensor label in your monitoring app. Fan speed alone cannot identify the sensor: a fan curve, delay, smoothing, and the fan itself all affect how quickly and how much it spins.

Find the temperature source for the fan header

  1. Identify the header. Determine whether the fan is connected to CPU_FAN, CPU_OPT, or a chassis/system header. If you are unsure, consult the motherboard manual or trace the fan connection.
  2. Open the controller. In BIOS/UEFI, look for the hardware monitor or fan-control page. If a Windows utility or third-party fan-control program manages the fan, inspect its settings too.
  3. Select that exact header. Look for a setting called temperature source, temperature input, fan source, or similar. Record the selected input; different headers can use different sources.
  4. Match the label in your monitoring app. Compare the selected input with the exact sensor names displayed by your monitoring software. If the names do not match, check the motherboard documentation rather than assuming they are aliases.

Available choices depend on the motherboard. For example, MSI’s Intel 600 BIOS manual lists CPU, System, MOS, PCH, PCIe, M.2, and external thermal sensor choices; MSI’s cited B550M manual also documents fan selection and curve points. Gigabyte describes Smart Fan 6 on the H610M H V2 as supporting multiple temperature sensors. Those examples show why the exact board matters, not what every board offers. Understand what the sensor labels mean

CPU temperature labels can refer to different measurements or calculations. HWiNFO staff member Martin explained the distinctions in a post dated 2019-03-17; names and availability can vary by CPU generation and software version. HWiNFO forum explanation

  • AMD CPU (Tctl) and Tdie: Tctl is a control temperature used for cooling on AMD Zen processors. On some X-series and Threadripper processors, it may differ from Tdie by an offset. Where that offset applies, Martin described Tdie as the real temperature, calculated as Tdie = Tctl − Tctl_offset. If there is no offset, the software may display a combined Tctl/Tdie value.
  • Intel CPU Package: Martin described this as a CPU-calculated 256-millisecond average of the hottest temperature sensor within the package.
  • Core Max and individual core readings: Core Max is the highest reading among the cores; Core #n refers to an individual core.
  • Motherboard CPU reading: This may come from a sensor near the socket or from an internal digital thermal sensor. Do not assume that a motherboard label such as “CPU” means CPU Package, Tctl/Tdie, or a particular core reading.

If your firmware says “CPU” or “CPU Core,” identify what that label means for your specific motherboard and monitoring program. When documentation does not establish the mapping, treat it as uncertain rather than assigning it to a particular die sensor.

Check which controller is actually in charge

A BIOS curve may not be the curve currently governing a fan after the operating system loads. Check for a motherboard utility or third-party fan-control program that may manage the same header. The control behavior is software- and system-specific, so do not assume every utility overrides firmware in the same way.

ASUS documents one specific example: AI Cooling can be activated through Fan Xpert 4 in AI Suite 3, and ASUS says it overrides manual controls once activated. That applies to the documented ASUS feature, not automatically to other boards or utilities. ASUS AI Cooling documentation

Use fan behavior as a cross-check, not a sensor identifier

A fan curve maps its selected temperature input to a target duty or speed. Configured curve points, delays, smoothing, and the fan’s own behavior can all affect when its RPM changes. So, if the fan speeds up while the temperature reading you are watching remains lower, it may be responding to a different input—or the readings may update or respond differently. Compare the configured source with the monitoring labels rather than inferring the source from RPM alone.

When you change a source, curve, or fan mode, make one change at a time and verify that the fan operates as intended. MSI’s BIOS manual specifically cautions users to ensure fans work properly after adjusting speed and switching fan mode. Do not disable safety behavior or set a curve that leaves a cooler without adequate airflow. MSI BIOS manual

Fan Temperature Controller, ICSTATION DC 12V PWM 4-Wire Fan Speed Controller Module with Temperature Probe Digital Display ℃ Temperature Controlled Governor for 3A Fan PC
  • Fan Speed Regulator: This device is a 4 wire temperature-controlled fan speed regulator that allows for automatic or manual adjustment of fan speed based on temperature (℃) readings. It features a digital display showing both the current temperature and the fan’s rotational speed in RPM (revolutions per minute). The system helps maintain optimal cooling performance and energy efficiency by increasing fan speed as temperatures rise and reducing speed when cooling demand is lower.
  • X100RPM: The RPM (rotations per minute) is displayed in units of 100 RPM, which allows it to accommodate and clearly show the speeds of high-performance fans, this makes it particularly suitable for industrial or specialized applications that utilize high-RPM fans. The maximum readable value on the display is 300 × 100 RPM = 30,000 RPM, ensuring compatibility with a wide range of fan types.
  • 2 Control Modes: The device offers both manual and automatic fan speed control modes, giving users flexibility to adapt to various cooling needs and environments. This dual-mode system provides an ideal balance between user control and intelligent automation.
  • Temperature Probe: To ensure accurate thermal regulation, the fan controller is equipped with a 42cm (16.54 inch) temperature probe. This probe continuously senses the surrounding temperature and sends real-time data to the controller, which is then shown on the digital display. The extended cable length provides flexibility in sensor placement, allowing users to position the probe closer to heat-sensitive components or areas where precise temperature monitoring is needed. Temperature probe parameters: NTC10KB = 3590
  • Note: This controller only controls the fan speed adjustment controlled by a 4-wire PWM signal. The signal specification is 25KHZ 5V. It cannot control the speed regulation of 2-3 wire fans. The working voltage must be equal to the fan voltage.

When the source is still unclear

A definitive identification requires the motherboard model, BIOS version, fan header, and the utility currently controlling that header. Check the exact motherboard manual or vendor support documentation for ambiguous labels. A menu from another model, including a vendor FAQ about a single board, cannot establish your system’s setting. For example, MSI says that on the Z370I GAMING PRO CARBON AC, both CPU and system fan RPM use CPU temperature as their source; that statement should not be generalized to other MSI boards.
