It cannot, by itself, prove that a nest was covered, identify a parent’s behavior, or define reproduction for every dinosaur. Researchers combine shell-unit architecture, mineralized layers, pore canals, thickness, surface features, egg mass, sediment, and comparisons with living birds and crocodilians to build testable hypotheses.
What information survives in a dinosaur eggshell?
A calcified dinosaur eggshell is a biological structure, not merely a hard coating. In known calcified eggs, an inner membrane is surrounded by a protein matrix mineralized largely with calcite, and an outer cuticle may cover the surface. The mineralized part can preserve organization at several scales: the shape and arrangement of shell units, the boundaries between layers, crystal orientation, surface texture, and the channels that once connected the inside of the egg with the outside.

Those features are visible at different magnifications. A broken surface may show overall thickness and layer order. Thin sections viewed with transmitted or polarized light can reveal crystal organization. Scanning electron microscopy can expose shell-unit inner structure and pore openings. Chemical and spectroscopic methods can test whether an apparent layer is mineral, organic residue, or a product of later alteration. No single method recovers the complete original egg, so a strong interpretation compares several kinds of evidence from the same specimen whenever possible.
Shell units and layers
Shell units are the basic mineralized columns or structural elements that grew outward from the membrane. Their inner and outer architecture, contact with neighboring units, and relationship to pores help researchers compare eggs from different animals. Layering can indicate how mineralization proceeded during formation and whether a specimen represents a complete shell or only the better-preserved outer portion.

Pore canals and surface features
Pores are channels through which oxygen and carbon dioxide could move and through which water vapor could be lost. Their openings, branching pattern, density, cross-sectional area, and path length are more informative than simply counting holes on a weathered fragment. A cuticle or other surface coating could partly restrict exchange, while abrasion or dissolution can enlarge or erase openings after burial.
How scientists turn shell structure into reproductive clues
Researchers usually follow a sequence that separates observation from interpretation:
- Document preservation. They record whether the specimen is an intact egg, a fragment, or an embryo-bearing egg, and identify fractures, missing surfaces, recrystallization, and sediment infill.
- Measure architecture. Microscopy is used to describe shell units, mineralized layers, membrane remnants, cuticle, pore geometry, and total thickness.
- Estimate function. Pore area and an estimate of pore length, often related to shell thickness, are used to calculate water-vapor conductance or related exchange properties.
- Compare living animals. Values and structures are compared with birds and crocodilians, whose eggs and nesting settings can be observed directly.
- Test the evolutionary pattern. The characters are mapped onto a phylogeny, alongside egg shape, mass, surface texture, fracture patterns, clutch context, and sedimentology.
The result is a constrained hypothesis. A shell feature can make a covered, open, buried, or brooded setting more or less plausible, but it does not directly record the nest or a parent sitting on it.
Pores, gas exchange, and water loss
An embryo needs oxygen and must release carbon dioxide. The same pore system also allows water vapor to leave the egg. Researchers therefore treat pore geometry as a potential record of the balance between respiration and dehydration during incubation.

Conductance calculations use total pore area relative to a path length through the shell. Because the actual canal length may be difficult to recover in a fossil, shell thickness can serve as a proxy under stated assumptions. The calculation is sensitive to whether pores are open, blocked by mineral infill, branched, or partly destroyed. It is also sensitive to the egg’s size and to environmental variables such as temperature, humidity, and atmospheric pressure.
For that reason, a conductance estimate is a calculated proxy, not a direct measurement of the dinosaur’s nest. A value that resembles those of living crocodilians may support a hypothesis of substrate-covered incubation, while a value closer to open-nesting birds may support a different setting. The comparison is meaningful only when the fossil shell is sufficiently intact and the living reference animals are ecologically appropriate.
Why shell thickness cannot stand alone
Thicker shell does not automatically mean an open nest, and thinner shell does not automatically mean a buried egg. Thickness changes with egg mass and shape, and it can vary during embryonic development. Mineral loss, compaction, and recrystallization can also make a fossil shell appear thinner or thicker than it was. Studies of early dinosaur eggs therefore compare thickness with egg mass and other traits rather than using a single threshold to assign behavior.
Can pores show whether a nest was covered?
They can provide evidence for or against particular incubation environments, but they cannot show a nest covering directly. Living archosaurs offer the comparison. Crocodilians generally bury eggs in substrate, where environmental heat and moisture surround the clutch. Many birds incubate exposed eggs in open nests and add heat through brooding. These are broad ecological patterns, not rigid rules for every living species.

The 2015 PLOS ONE study “Eggshell Porosity Provides Insight on Evolution of Nesting in Dinosaurs” used eggshell porosity and conductance comparisons to investigate this question. Its abstract states: “Knowledge about the types of nests built by dinosaurs can provide insight into the evolution of nesting and reproductive behaviors among archosaurs.” The study’s conclusion is an inference from shell measurements and living comparisons; it is not an observation of a dinosaur nest.
A 2006 Palaeontology paper by Deeming calculated conductance from dinosaur eggshell ultrastructure and interpreted the results as consistent with eggs incubated while buried in substrate. That is the paper’s interpretation. Later work stresses that pore morphology, clutch position, surrounding sediment, and the assumptions used to estimate conductance should be evaluated together. A conductance result that points toward burial is stronger when sedimentology and egg arrangement indicate a covered clutch, and weaker when preservation has obscured the relevant pores.
What shell structure says about the evolution of egg types
Researchers often use the terms hard-shelled, semi-rigid, and soft-shelled, but those labels do not have a single consistently applied definition across studies. A broad label can conceal important differences in membrane structure, shell-unit organization, pore arrangement, and mineral content. A phylogenetic analysis of discrete characters is usually more informative than assigning an entire fossil to one category from a single observation.

The soft-shell hypothesis
A 2020 study proposed that the first dinosaur egg was soft. That interpretation drew on chemical signals interpreted as evidence of organic-rich material rather than a fully mineralized shell. If correct, it would imply that extensive mineralization evolved later in dinosaur history and that the earliest eggs may have resembled flexible eggs of some living reptiles in important respects.

The semi-rigid alternative
A later review describes disagreement about the reliability of those organic-material signals. It also discusses evidence used to support semi-rigid shells in early branching dinosaurs, including early sauropodomorphs. In this view, the earliest eggs may have had a substantial but incomplete mineralized layer that does not fit neatly into either “soft” or “hard.” Shell thickness relative to egg mass, surface texture, egg shape, fracture patterns, membrane elements, and shell-unit structure are all relevant to the comparison.
The disagreement remains an active interpretation issue. Fossil samples are sparse, early dinosaur clades are unevenly represented, and the mineralized component is more likely to survive than a flexible membrane or organic layer. A conclusion about the ancestral egg should therefore state which characters were measured, how they were preserved, and how the phylogenetic model treated missing data.

A 2019 Scientific Reports study examined some of the earliest known dinosaur eggshells, from the Early Jurassic Sinemurian interval. The material has thin calcareous shells, and the study compared shell thickness with egg mass across living and extinct egg-laying amniotes. Its nesting inference favored burial, but the authors noted that more complete measurements of pore density and relative porosity were needed.

Thin shell can be compatible with a covered nest when the estimated conductance and comparison taxa support that interpretation, but the inference is not complete without reliable pore data. If pore canals are missing, filled, or represented only by a small fragment, the range of possible conductance values widens.

Why preservation changes the answer
Fossilization is selective. Rigid mineralized shells have a greater chance of surviving than flexible shell components, membranes, or organic coatings. Groundwater can dissolve calcite, replace it with new minerals, or fill pore canals. Compaction can deform an egg and close channels. Surface abrasion can remove a cuticle and enlarge pores. A specimen may therefore preserve a real shell feature while losing the layer that gave it biological context.
Taphonomy and diagenesis must be reported alongside the biological interpretation. Researchers look for consistent textures across multiple fragments, mineral phases that indicate replacement, and pore shapes that are unlikely to be cracks or later dissolution. An embryo-bearing egg can provide especially valuable context, but it is still subject to the same chemical and mechanical alteration as an isolated shell fragment.
How uneven sampling affects dinosaur-wide claims
The fossil record does not sample dinosaur clades evenly. Some groups are represented by many eggs and embryos; others are known from isolated fragments or not known from eggshell at all. Early branching dinosaurs are particularly important to questions about ancestral egg type, yet they are also where missing intermediate forms can most strongly affect the result.

A proposed evolutionary transition should identify the taxa represented, the characters that are missing, and whether alternative placements on the phylogenetic tree change the conclusion.
A practical checklist for reading a new eggshell claim
- Identify the specimen. Is it an intact egg, a fragment, an embryo-bearing egg, or a surface impression?
- Ask what was directly observed. Separate measured pores, layers, and shell units from calculated conductance or inferred behavior.
- Check the comparison animals. Note whether the study used birds, crocodilians, or both, and whether their nesting environments are comparable.
- Look for multiple traits. Egg mass, shape, surface texture, fracture pattern, sediment, and clutch arrangement can test a shell-only interpretation.
- Read the preservation assessment. Diagenetic alteration, mineral infill, and missing layers can change the apparent signal.
- Check the taxonomic scope. A result from one dinosaur lineage is not automatically a result for Dinosauria as a whole.
What fossilized eggshell cannot tell us by itself
Shell structure cannot identify the dinosaur parent with certainty unless the egg is connected to diagnostic skeletal material or an embryo. It cannot establish how often an adult visited the nest, whether a clutch was guarded, how long incubation lasted, or whether parents cooperated. Those questions require independent evidence such as trackways, skeletal associations, embryo orientation, nest architecture, or comparisons with living animals.
Even for incubation setting, the strongest conclusion is comparative: the shell’s exchange properties are more compatible with some living covered or open nests than with others under stated assumptions. That is valuable evidence about reproductive evolution, but it remains an inference rather than a preserved behavior.
Bottom line
Fossilized eggshell structure is most useful as a layered evidence system. Shell units and mineralized layers reveal how an egg formed; pores and thickness help estimate gas and water exchange; egg mass, sediment, and clutch context test whether a covered or open incubation environment is plausible; and phylogenetic comparisons track changes in egg types. Preservation, uneven sampling, and disagreements over “soft,” “semi-rigid,” and “hard” categories prevent any single trait from revealing a complete dinosaur reproductive strategy. The most defensible reconstructions combine several shell characters with living-archosaur comparisons and state clearly where the evidence ends.
