For a long-form prose editor, prioritize recoverable work, easy manuscript navigation, useful progress tracking, and dependable export. These features support a project from its first sections through revision and handoff. Focus modes, collaboration, syncing, privacy, accessibility, and offline use matter too when they match your workflow, but they should be checked against your own needs rather than assumed to be universal advantages.
Start with structure you can navigate
A long manuscript is easier to manage when you can move between its parts without treating it as one unwieldy document. Look for a clear way to divide work into chapters or smaller sections, reorder those sections, and see how they fit into the whole.

The right level of structure depends on the project. A book may need chapters; a novel with many scenes may benefit from finer-grained organization. Scrivener describes composing in sections of different sizes, while the Obsidian Longform plugin supports an ordered, reorderable, nestable scene list. These are examples of documented approaches, not proof that every writer needs scene-level organization. Scrivener overview · Obsidian Longform plugin

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minute- Can you get from the current passage to another chapter or scene quickly?
- Can you reorder sections without losing sight of the larger outline?
- Can the structure accommodate the way you actually draft, whether that means chapters, scenes, or larger parts?
Make recovery part of the decision
Autosave reduces the need to remember manual saves, but it is not a complete recovery plan. Check whether the editor also creates backups or keeps earlier versions, where those copies are stored, and how to restore an entire project or an individual section.

Scrivener lists auto-save and backups in its product overview. Skribisto describes version history that can restore earlier text for a scene. Those feature descriptions do not establish how well a tool will recover every kind of failure, so inspect the recovery process before trusting it with important work. - Check whether you can restore a previous version without replacing unrelated work.
- Try the recovery steps on a sample project before relying on them for a large manuscript.
Choose progress measures that fit your process
A single total word count may not answer every useful question. Depending on how you work, you may want to track a writing session, a chapter or scene, and the whole project. Targets are helpful only when they correspond to a real milestone; daily goals suit some routines, while section or manuscript targets may be more useful for others.

Check the final handoff before you commit
Drafting tools are only useful at the end if the manuscript can leave them in a format your next step accepts. Identify the formats required by an editor, collaborator, publisher, or submission portal, then export a sample and inspect the result. Check headings, section order, and basic formatting rather than assuming an export will preserve everything as intended.

Scrivener says it exports to Microsoft Word or RTF; Longform describes a manuscript compilation tool. If a particular file format or layout is essential, verify it in the current product documentation and with a sample project. Scrivener overview · Obsidian Longform plugin
Treat the writing environment as a personal-fit feature
Readability, navigation, themes, and distraction controls affect how comfortable an editor feels over a long session, but feature descriptions alone do not show that a focus mode improves concentration or writing output. Skribisto describes distraction-free writing and themes; try the editor with representative work to decide whether those options suit you. Skribisto project site

Also test the practical workflow around the writing surface: how quickly you can find notes, move between sections, and return to the passage you were editing. Scrivener describes keeping research nearby, while Skribisto describes notes linked to where topics appear in prose. Whether that arrangement is useful depends on how you gather and use reference material. Scrivener overview · Skribisto project site
Compare candidates with the same sample project
Use a short but representative manuscript sample in each candidate editor. Include multiple sections, a few notes, and enough material to try navigation, tracking, recovery, and export. This makes trade-offs visible without relying on feature lists alone.
