If your USB flash drive is missing from File Explorer or Finder, first check whether Windows or macOS can still see it in its disk utility. A drive that appears there but not in the file browser may have a missing drive letter or an unmounted volume; a drive absent from the disk utility needs connection checks before you can diagnose further. If the files matter, do not format or partition the drive while troubleshooting.
First, check the connection
- Unplug the flash drive, then reconnect it firmly.
- Try a different USB port. Connect the drive directly to the computer instead of through a hub or dock.
- If you are using a powered hub, make sure its power adapter is connected. Apple recommends checking the connection and power, and trying a direct port, when an external device prompts a USB power warning. That guidance applies to power-related warnings; it does not mean every undetected flash drive has a power problem. Apple’s USB power guidance
Next, check the operating system’s disk utility. This separates a file-browser visibility problem from a device that the computer does not detect at all.

On Windows 10 or 11, check Disk Management
Open Start and search for Create and format hard disk partitions to open Disk Management. Microsoft’s Disk Management guide explains how to view disks and volumes and change a drive letter.

If the volume is listed but has no drive letter
A missing letter can keep an otherwise detected volume from appearing in File Explorer. In Disk Management, identify the volume that belongs to your flash drive, then use the drive-letter change option for that volume. Be careful to select the USB volume, not another disk or partition. If files are important, do not choose options to format, initialize, or create a partition as a general troubleshooting step.

If the disk appears but the volume does not
Do not create a new volume or format the disk just to make it appear in File Explorer. Microsoft warns that “Formatting a volume will destroy any data on the partition.” Its Windows File Recovery guidance also says not to create a partition after data loss because doing so reduces the chance of successful recovery.
If the flash drive is absent from Disk Management
Try another direct USB port and reconnect the device. If the problem involves a USB-C device and Windows shows an error, open Device Manager and note the reported error code; Microsoft’s USB-C troubleshooting guidance directs users to steps for the corresponding Device Manager error. A drive missing from Disk Management is not simply a missing-letter problem.

On Mac, check Disk Utility and Finder
Open Disk Utility and choose View > Show All Devices if that option is available. Check the sidebar for the flash drive. Apple’s Disk Utility guide describes viewing devices and running First Aid.

If a volume is visible but not mounted, use Disk Utility’s available mount control. If the device or volume appears but reports an error, First Aid can check and repair certain formatting and directory-structure problems. First Aid is not a reason to erase the drive, and it is not a guarantee that files can be recovered.

If it is missing from Finder but present in Disk Utility
Finder is where you normally view and use connected storage, but absence from Finder alone does not establish hardware failure. Apple lists thumb drives and USB drives as external storage and explains how to find connected storage in Finder in its Mac storage guide. Check Disk Utility before concluding the device is undetected.
If it is absent from Disk Utility
Check the cable or adapter, connection, and power, and try another port or direct connection. Apple says that if an external storage device still does not appear in Disk Utility after connection checks, the Mac or the storage device might need service. Menu wording can vary by macOS version.

Protect files before attempting a repair
If the flash drive contains files you need, stop before formatting, erasing, initializing, or creating a partition. Those actions can overwrite or remove information needed for recovery. If the files are irreplaceable, avoid further changes and consider qualified data-recovery help rather than experimenting with repairs.
Windows File Recovery is a later option when Windows detects the source drive and the reader understands the tool’s file-system and recovery-mode limits. Microsoft’s instructions cover flash and USB drives as sources, but recovery software cannot repair a drive that the computer does not detect at all. Recovery is not guaranteed.

When the drive works again
After the flash drive is mounted and usable, eject it safely before unplugging it. Microsoft recommends using safe removal to reduce the risk of data loss; see its safe-removal instructions.
