What is a fan on a chip?
The phrase describes a miniature air-moving component made using micro-electromechanical systems (MEMS). “Fan” refers to its cooling function; the mechanism is closer to an air pump than to a conventional fan with a rotating impeller. The named example in current product materials is xMEMS Labs’ XMC-2400 µCooling component.

xMEMS describes the XMC-2400 as an all-silicon active micro-cooling component about a millimeter thick. Its stated purpose is to move air in places where the dimensions or layout of a traditional fan may not work.

How does it move air without blades?
In the XMC-2400 design described by IEEE Spectrum, an electrical charge makes piezoelectric material change shape. That movement acts on a hollow cavity, cantilever vents and a lower valve: the mechanism creates suction and pressure, then releases air through the valve. The result is directed airflow without a spinning rotor.

The package is available in top-venting and side-venting configurations, according to xMEMS. Those options give device makers different ways to route air within a host product. IEEE Spectrum describes possible placements directly over a mobile system-on-chip to vent air away, or beside it to draw air across the chip. These are integration examples, not confirmation that a particular phone or laptop contains the component.
What are the XMC-2400’s published specifications?
xMEMS’ 2024 announcement gives the component’s dimensions and airflow figures below. They are manufacturer-reported specifications, not independent measurements of cooling performance in a finished device.

xMEMS lists smartphones, tablets, external SSDs, wireless chargers, XR goggles and laptops as intended application areas. The common requirement is active airflow in a compact product, where designers must fit the cooler into the available space and connect it to a useful path for air.

IEEE Spectrum also reports that xMEMS adapted the concept for a possible optical-transceiver application. That is an explored integration, not evidence that the component is generally deployed in data centers.
Does it cool a device better than a regular fan?
The available specifications do not establish that. Airflow alone is not a reliable measure of how much a finished device’s temperature will fall: results depend on the heat path from the processor or other component, the route air takes through the product, back pressure, packaging and operating conditions. The cited materials do not establish independent temperature reductions or performance gains across consumer devices using the XMC-2400.

One comparison in IEEE Spectrum is Frore Systems’ AirJet Mini Slim, which the article says can move 100 cm³/s and is larger than the XMC-2400. Those airflow figures should not be treated as a universal ranking. A meaningful comparison needs the package size, airflow under relevant back pressure and the host product’s duct and vent design—not just the largest headline number.
Can consumers buy the XMC-2400?
The sources describe the XMC-2400 as a component for integration by device makers, and xMEMS directs prospective customers to contact sales. A secondary review did not identify a public retail purchase path or price in the materials it examined. The available evidence therefore does not establish an ordinary consumer checkout option; it does not prove that no marketplace listing exists anywhere.
