HDDs and SSDs are different technologies, not interchangeable names. Before buying, check the drive’s interface against your Mac’s ports, then consider power, portability, capacity, and whether the drive is for everyday files or Time Machine backups.
HDD or SSD: which type suits your Mac?
External hard drives usually refers to HDDs, which store data on spinning disks. An external SSD uses flash storage. The practical choice is about workload rather than a universal winner: HDDs are a reasonable option for storing a lot of data that you do not access constantly, while SSDs are more relevant for portable work files and frequent large transfers. Performance varies by model and connection, so do not assume every SSD will be fast on every Mac.

| Your need | Drive type to consider | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Capacity-focused backup or archive | Portable or desktop HDD | Capacity, connector, expected performance, power needs, and how often you will move it. |
| Portable work files or frequent large transfers | External SSD | Drive and Mac interface support, capacity, ruggedness, and price. |
| Large library kept at a desk | Desktop HDD or RAID storage | Capacity, mains power, connections, and whether RAID redundancy or dock features are needed. |
| Mac backups | External drive configured for Time Machine | Apple’s current setup and formatting instructions for your macOS version. |
Apple’s Mac storage catalog includes portable HDDs, portable SSDs, desktop drives, and RAID systems. Examples listed include the WD G-DRIVE ArmorATD, LaCie portable and desktop drives, SanDisk Extreme Portable SSD, and SanDisk Professional PRO-G40 SSD. These illustrate the range of drive types available; they are not a universal ranking.

Interface and Mac compatibility
USB-C describes a connector shape, not the drive’s full transfer capability. Check the actual interface supported by the drive and the ports and capabilities of your Mac. A drive’s advertised performance is not guaranteed on every host. For example, Thunderbolt 5’s full capability depends on the Mac model and software, so confirm both host and drive specifications before paying for a high-performance model. Macworld’s 2026 external SSD comparison discusses differences in interfaces, host compatibility, ruggedness, and cost.
#1 Best Overall
- NEARLY 2X FASTER THAN OUR PREVIOUS GENERATION(8) – move 1,000 high-res photos in under 60 seconds(6) with up to 2000MB/s transfer speeds(2).
- IP65 RATING AND UP TO 3M DROP PROTECTION(3) – protects against spills and drops.
- POCKET-SIZED – fits easily in pockets and small bags.
- SPACE TO OWN YOUR AI CONTENT – speed and capacity to download your high-res clips and photo edits.
- 256-BIT AES ENCRYPTION(4) – helps keep private files secure with password protection.
Portability, durability, and price
For travel, compare size, ruggedness, capacity, and the connection you can use with your Mac. For a desk-based library, a desktop drive may make more sense than a compact portable model, but it can take more space and may require mains power. Compare the total fit for your use rather than choosing by brand reputation alone: capacity, interface, portability, power, Mac compatibility, and budget all matter.
Current SSD examples in Macworld’s comparison include the LaCie Rugged SSD Pro5, OWC Express 1M2, SanDisk Extreme Portable SSD, SanDisk Professional PRO-G40, and Samsung T5 EVO. Their interfaces and performance characteristics differ; use the comparison to check model-specific details rather than assuming all external SSDs behave alike.

- Up to 3-meter drop protection and IP65 water and dust resistance mean this tough drive can take a beating(3) (Previously rated for 2-meter drop protection and IP55 rating. Now qualified for the higher, stated specs.)
- Use the handy carabiner loop to secure it to your belt loop or backpack for extra peace of mind.
- Help keep private content private with the included password protection featuring 256‐bit AES hardware encryption.(3)
- Easily manage files and automatically free up space with the SanDisk Memory Zone app.(5). Non-Operating Temperature -20°C to 85°C
When a Mac backup drive should be an HDD or SSD
Either drive type can be used as external storage for a backup workflow, but owning a drive alone does not make it a backup or guarantee that your files are safe. Apple’s Time Machine is its Mac backup feature. Follow Apple’s current instructions for setting up a disk and check the formatting guidance for your macOS version before configuring it: Use Time Machine to back up your Mac.

Some drives ship formatted as exFAT or for Windows, and may need reformatting for a particular Mac use. Before erasing or reformatting a drive, copy any data you need elsewhere: formatting destroys existing data. Check the current Apple steps before changing the disk format.

Portable HDD or desktop storage?
Portable HDDs
A portable HDD is worth considering when capacity is more important than frequent fast transfers and you may want to carry the drive. Compare connector, capacity, expected HDD-level performance, and whether its supplied format suits your Mac workflow. Macworld’s 2026 external HDD comparison covers examples such as WD My Passport Ultra for Mac, Seagate Ultra Touch HDD, SanDisk Professional G-Drive ArmorATD, and LaCie Mobile Drive.
Desktop HDDs and RAID
A desktop drive can suit a large library that stays in one place. Check whether it needs mains power and whether its extra ports or dock features are useful to you. RAID storage is another desk-based category, but the added features should match a real need; do not choose it simply because it is more elaborate. Apple’s storage catalog also lists desktop HDD and RAID products.

How to choose the right external drive for your Mac
- Define the job. Decide whether the drive is for Time Machine, an archive, portable project files, or frequent transfers.
- Choose the drive class. Consider an HDD for capacity-focused storage or an SSD for portable work and faster transfers.
- Match the connection. Check the drive’s actual interface and the supported ports and capabilities of your Mac; a USB-C connector alone does not specify performance.
- Check setup needs. Confirm power requirements and whether the supplied format works for your intended use. Follow Apple’s current Time Machine and formatting guidance for backups.
- Compare the practical trade-offs. Weigh capacity, speed and interface, portability, ruggedness, power, Mac compatibility, and budget for the specific model.
