To run a Minecraft Java Edition server, you need a compatible Java runtime, the correct server JAR, enough CPU, memory and storage, an accepted EULA, a configured server.properties file, and network access through TCP port 25565. Before inviting anyone, add a whitelist and establish a backup routine.
Prefer not to run the server on your own PC? Godlike.Host offers hosted Minecraft Java servers with free DDoS protection and up to three free backups a day.
This checklist walks from an empty folder to a reachable, safer server. It applies to a self-hosted Java Edition server; Bedrock Edition and managed hosting panels follow different procedures.

Choose the server software and where it will run before downloading anything. That decision determines which Java version, files and maintenance tasks you need.
Vanilla server
The official Vanilla server JAR is the simplest choice and matches the unmodified game. Download the JAR for the exact Minecraft release you intend to run from the official Minecraft download page. Keep the file in a dedicated folder rather than in Downloads; the server will create its world and configuration files there.

Paper or another optimized server
Paper is a commonly used alternative when you want performance improvements and plugin support. It is not the official Vanilla build, so check plugin compatibility and use the Paper build corresponding to your Minecraft version.
Forge or NeoForge mod server
A modded server needs the loader and mod files that match the selected Minecraft release. Do not mix a Vanilla or Paper JAR with Forge or NeoForge mods. Every player normally needs the same loader and client-side mod set.

Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Home computer or rented machine
| Choice | What you provide | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Home computer | Hardware, Java, router configuration, firewall rules and reliable power and internet | No hosting fee, but your connection and computer must stay available; port forwarding is required |
| Rented server | Install or select the server software in the provider’s control panel and manage its files | Recurring cost, but the provider generally supplies public networking and datacenter uptime |
For a small private world, home hosting is practical if your internet plan permits incoming connections and the computer can remain on. A rented machine is usually simpler when you need continuous uptime or cannot configure your router.
2. Install the Java runtime that matches your Minecraft version
Minecraft servers run on Java. Use the newest Java release supported by the exact server version, not simply the newest Java installer you happen to find. The Minecraft Wiki’s version table gives these requirements:
| Minecraft server version | Required Java line | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 26.1 and later | Java 25 | Use the current Java 25 runtime supported by that release |
| 1.20.5 and later | Java 21 | Applies to releases in this range that are not covered by the newer 26.1 requirement |
| 1.18 and later | Java 17 | Use for versions whose documented requirement is Java 17 |
Some hosting guides publish different boundaries, including Java 21 for 1.20.5 through 1.21.x. Treat the Minecraft Wiki’s table and the documentation for your exact release as the authority, because Java requirements can change with a game update.

JRE or JDK?
The server needs a Java Runtime Environment (JRE). A Java Development Kit (JDK) also works, but its compiler and other development tools are not used by the server at runtime. Installing a JRE keeps a dedicated server installation smaller; install a JDK only when you have another reason to develop or build software on that machine.
Verify Java before launching
- Open Command Prompt, PowerShell or a terminal.
- Run
java -version. - Confirm that the reported major version matches the server release’s requirement.
- If the command is not found, install the matching Java runtime and ensure its executable is on your system PATH, or use the full path to the Java executable in your launch script.
3. Check hardware and bandwidth
The server’s tick loop is sensitive to single-thread CPU speed. More cores help the operating system and other applications, but Minecraft’s main workload generally benefits more from a fast core than from a very high core count.
Memory
The Minecraft Wiki recommends at least 2 GB of available RAM for a small server. A separate hosting guide recommends at least 4 GB free for a few friends and more for larger or modded worlds. These are planning figures, not guarantees: view distance, simulation distance, entity counts, plugins, mods and the number of concurrent players all change actual use.
CPU
Choose a modern processor with strong single-thread performance. If the machine also runs a desktop, voice chat, map rendering or other services, leave CPU and memory headroom rather than assigning every resource to Minecraft.
Storage
Reserve at least 5 GB for the JAR, generated world, logs and configuration, with substantially more free space for exploration and backups. An SSD reduces world and chunk loading delays compared with a hard disk.

- COMMUNITY PLAY — Connect with players on community servers, or subscribe to Realms Plus (sold separately) to play with up to 10 friends on a private server.
Upload capacity
One hosting guide gives rough planning tiers of about 5 Mbps upload for 1–5 players, 10–20 Mbps for 5–20 players and 50 Mbps or more for 50-plus players. Those figures are not official Minecraft requirements and should be treated as unverified estimates; actual traffic depends on view distance, world activity and plugins. Test your connection’s upload speed and leave capacity for every other device on the network.
4. Create the server folder and run the JAR once
- Create a folder such as
MinecraftServeron the machine that will host the world. - Place the downloaded server JAR in that folder. Rename it to a simple name such as
server.jaronly if your launch command uses that name. - Open a terminal in the folder. On Windows, use File Explorer’s address bar or right-click and choose the terminal option; on Linux or macOS, use
cdto enter the directory. - Start it once with
java -jar server.jar nogui. Thenoguioption runs the server without the graphical window and is convenient for a dedicated machine. - Wait for the process to create files, then stop it from the console with
stop. Do not close the terminal window abruptly while the world is saving.
The first run creates the world directory, logs, server.properties and eula.txt. If the JAR exits immediately, read the terminal output before changing settings; a Java-version error means the runtime does not match the server.
5. Accept the EULA correctly
The first run creates eula.txt with eula=false and exits. This is expected behavior, not a crash. Open the file in a plain-text editor, read the linked Minecraft End User License Agreement, and change only the setting to eula=true if you agree. Save the file and run the same command again. Leaving it false makes the server shut down on every start.
Do not add quotation marks or spaces around the value. The line should be exactly eula=true.

6. Configure server.properties
Edit server.properties after the initial run, while the server is stopped. It is a UTF-8 Java-properties file: one key=value entry per line, with # beginning a comment. Values are stored as text and interpreted by the server, so preserve the key names and syntax. Notepad or another plain-text editor is suitable; avoid a word processor that adds formatting.

Settings most owners change
| Setting | Purpose | Practical guidance |
|---|---|---|
server-port |
TCP port on which the server listens | Keep the default 25565 unless you have a reason to use another port; any router and firewall rule must match it |
max-players |
Maximum simultaneous players | Set a realistic limit for your hardware and upload capacity |
difficulty |
World difficulty | Choose the value appropriate for the group; changing it does not replace a backup |
white-list |
Restricts joining to approved names | Set it to true before sharing the address with other people |
Many servers run acceptably with the defaults. Change one setting at a time, restart after edits, and check the console for an invalid-value message.
7. Allocate memory with a launch script
Java’s -Xms flag sets the initial heap and -Xmx sets the maximum heap. A common starting command is:
java -Xms4G -Xmx4G -jar server.jar nogui
Use a value your machine can sustain while leaving RAM for the operating system and other services. Giving Minecraft all available memory can make the computer less stable; assigning far more than the world needs can also increase garbage-collection pauses. Adjust allocation after observing actual usage and lag rather than blindly choosing a large number.
Windows batch file
Create a file named start.bat in the server folder:
java -Xms4G -Xmx4G -jar server.jar nogui
pause
The pause line keeps the window open after an error so you can read it. For unattended operation, remove it only after you have confirmed the command works.
Best Value
- Play and share with friends on console, mobile and Windows 10
- discover community creations in the new in-game store
- access new mini games and game modes through servers
Linux shell script
Create start.sh with the same Java command, make it executable with chmod +x start.sh, and run it from the server directory. Keep the terminal or service manager attached so the process can receive the stop command during maintenance.
Outdated Drivers Are Slowing You Down

Local testing first
- Start the server and check its console for a message that it has finished loading.
- On the host computer, connect using
localhostor the machine’s local IP address. - From another device on the same home network, connect to the host’s private IP and port. This confirms the server and local firewall before you involve the router.
Router port forwarding
For friends outside your home, create a router port-forwarding rule for TCP port 25565 (or the custom port you selected) to the host computer’s private IP address. Give the host a DHCP reservation or static local address so the rule does not point to a different device after a reboot.
Operating-system firewall
Allow the Java process or the chosen TCP port through the host firewall. Windows Firewall commonly blocks unsolicited inbound connections by default. Permit only the required network profile and port; do not disable the firewall globally.
Changing public addresses
A residential public IP can change. A static public address or a reputable dynamic-DNS name lets players find the server after an address change. Confirm that your internet provider permits inbound connections; carrier-grade NAT can prevent port forwarding even when the router rule is correct.
9. Whitelist players before inviting them
Enable white-list=true in server.properties, restart, or use the console command whitelist on. Add each approved account with whitelist add PlayerName. The names must match the players’ Java Edition account names. Keep the list enabled while testing the public connection so an exposed address does not become an open server.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed

Use the console rather than granting operator privileges casually. Give operator status only to people who need administrative commands, and remove it when it is no longer necessary.
10. Build a backup routine before the world matters
A server process can be stopped safely before copying the world folder. The simplest procedure is:
- Type
save-allin the console and wait for the save confirmation. - Type
stopand wait until the process exits completely. - Copy the world folder,
server.properties, whitelist and other configuration files to a different disk or machine. - Keep multiple dated copies and periodically test that one can be restored.
If you must back up while players are online, use save-off, then save-all, copy the files, and run save-on immediately afterward. A copy stored on the same physical machine does not protect against disk failure, theft or ransomware, so keep at least one backup off the server computer.
Quick Recap
11. Troubleshoot the common failures
| Symptom | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Server exits immediately and mentions the EULA | eula.txt still contains eula=false |
Read the agreement and change the line to eula=true if you accept it |
java is not recognized or the class-file version is unsupported |
Java is missing, not on PATH, or the major version is wrong | Install the Java line required by the exact Minecraft release and verify with java -version |
| Friends cannot connect, but local players can | Port forwarding, firewall, wrong private IP or carrier-grade NAT | Check the server port, router destination, firewall rule and public-address conditions; test from outside the home network |
| Players report rubber-banding or tick lag | CPU saturation, insufficient memory, high view or simulation distance, entities or heavy plugins/mods | Check resource usage, reduce distances, remove problematic additions and keep the host free for the server |
| World progress disappears after a crash | No recent verified backup or an interrupted copy | Restore the newest known-good backup and adopt the stop-and-copy routine |
| Players see an outdated world or configuration | Edited files while the server was running, or started a different folder/JAR | Stop the process, confirm the working directory and file names, edit once, then restart and read the startup log |
12. Final pre-invite checklist
- The JAR and Java major version match the chosen Minecraft release.
- The host has adequate available RAM, fast single-thread CPU performance and at least 5 GB of free storage, with room for world growth.
- The server has completed one clean start and stop, and
eula=trueis set only after acceptance. server.propertiescontains the intended port, player limit, difficulty and whitelist setting.- The launch script uses sensible
-Xmsand-Xmxvalues and starts the intended JAR. - Local and outside-network connection tests succeed on the correct TCP port.
- The operating-system firewall allows only the required port or Java process.
- The whitelist is on and every intended player has been added.
- A dated backup exists on separate storage and you know how to restore it.
