The direct SteamCMD method is: install SteamCMD, log in anonymously, set a separate install directory, and run app_update 1829350 validate. App ID 1829350 is the V Rising dedicated-server tool; the playable client uses a different app ID, 1604030. Windows runs the server directly. On Linux, community setups install the Windows build and run it with Wine because a supported native Linux build has not been confirmed.

What you need before installing
You can host a V Rising server on your own Windows PC or a rented machine. SteamCMD itself is free, but you are responsible for storage, updates, firewall rules, backups, uptime and troubleshooting. Community hosting guidance commonly describes a single server as needing at least 6 GB of RAM, two CPU cores and 20 GB of storage; that specification is not clearly attributed or independently verified, so treat it as a starting point rather than a guaranteed requirement.

- A 64-bit Windows installation, or a Linux system capable of running Wine and the Windows server build.
- Administrator or root access to install SteamCMD, create directories and open firewall or router rules.
- A directory dedicated to the server, such as
C:VRisingServeron Windows or/srv/vrisingon Linux. - A way to forward the server’s configured ports if players will connect from outside your local network.
- Enough disk space for the server files, world saves, backups and future updates.
Do not install the server into a game-client directory. Keeping the dedicated server in its own folder makes updates, backups and permission checks much easier.
Windows installation with SteamCMD
1. Download and start SteamCMD
Download SteamCMD for Windows from Valve’s official distribution and extract it into a folder you control. A commonly used location is C:steamcmd. Run steamcmd.exe; the first launch downloads SteamCMD’s own updates and eventually displays a Steam> prompt.

2. Log in anonymously and choose the install directory
At the SteamCMD prompt, enter the following commands one at a time. Replace the path if you chose another folder.
login anonymous
force_install_dir C:VRisingServer
app_update 1829350 validate
quitlogin anonymous uses Steam’s anonymous account, so you do not need to enter your personal Steam credentials. force_install_dir keeps the dedicated server separate from your normal library. app_update 1829350 validate downloads the server tool and checks the installed files; it may take longer than a normal update because validation examines existing files.

steamcmd.exe +login anonymous +force_install_dir C:VRisingServer +app_update 1829350 validate +quitIf SteamCMD reports that a command is unknown, check that you are at the SteamCMD prompt and that the command is spelled exactly. If validation repeatedly fails, stop other SteamCMD processes, confirm that the install directory is writable, then run the update again.
3. Confirm the files
After SteamCMD exits, open the install directory. It should contain the server executable and a directory named VRisingServer_Data. The exact executable filename can change between builds, so use the supplied example start script or the executable currently present rather than copying an old filename from a guide.

4. Run the server once
Use the example start script included with the server, or launch the server executable once from the install directory. The first run creates the default save-data structure and settings templates. Let the process finish creating its files, then stop it cleanly. Starting it once before editing configuration is important: the JSON files are not normally available until the server has initialized.

The dedicated-server Linux status is unresolved in the available documentation. Community guides generally install the Windows package by forcing SteamCMD’s platform type to Windows, then launch that build through Wine. At least one guide says there is no native Linux build and that the developer does not officially support Wine. Check the current game build and official developer notes before committing to a Linux deployment; a future update could change the situation.
1. Install SteamCMD, Wine and optional virtual-display support
Install the Linux distribution packages for SteamCMD and Wine using your distribution’s normal package manager. Headless machines may also need a virtual X server such as xvfb-run, because some Windows server components expect a graphical environment even when no monitor is attached. Package names and Wine versions vary by distribution, so follow that distribution’s current documentation.
2. Force the Windows platform during installation
From the directory containing steamcmd.sh, use a command equivalent to:
./steamcmd.sh +@sSteamCmdForcePlatformType windows +force_install_dir /srv/vrising +login anonymous +app_update 1829350 validate +quitThe +@sSteamCmdForcePlatformType windows parameter tells SteamCMD to obtain the Windows server files. Keep the server directory writable by the account that will run Wine; mixing root-owned files with an unprivileged service account is a common source of update and save failures.

3. Launch the Windows server through Wine
Change to the install directory and run the server executable with Wine. A headless launch may look like this:
cd /srv/vrising
xvfb-run -a wine V Rising Dedicated Server.exeThe executable’s exact name may differ, so use the file supplied in your downloaded build. Community Docker images are another route for Linux administrators, but they remain community-maintained and require you to evaluate their image source, update policy, volume mapping and backup behavior yourself.
Linux failure points
- Missing 32-bit or graphics libraries: Wine may fail before the server starts. Install the required multi-architecture Wine dependencies for your distribution.
- No display: Try a virtual display wrapper on a headless host.
- Permission errors: Run SteamCMD, Wine and the server under the same service account and ensure that account can write saves and logs.
- Unexpected breakage after a patch: Wine compatibility is not an official support path. Keep a backup of the previous server files and saves before updating.
Keep settings safe from updates
After the first successful run, the default templates are generated in VRisingServer_Data/StreamingAssets/Settings. Do not edit the shipped files in place and assume they will survive an update. Instead, copy the templates into the server’s save-data Settings directory and edit those copies. The save-data location depends on how and under which account you launch the server, so use the folders created by your first run and the paths shown in the example start script.
- Stop the server completely.
- Open
VRisingServer_Data/StreamingAssets/Settings. - Copy
ServerHostSettings.jsonandServerGameSettings.json. - Paste the copies into the save-data
Settingsfolder created by the server. - Edit the copies with a text editor that preserves JSON syntax.
- Start the server and inspect the log for JSON or path errors.
Keep a backup of both JSON files before every patch. A missing comma, unmatched quotation mark or trailing character can prevent startup. If the server stops launching after an edit, restore the last known-good copy and make one change at a time.
ServerHostSettings.json
This file controls the server’s identity and networking behavior. Depending on the build, settings include the server name, password, player-slot count, save location, whether the server is listed publicly, port numbers and RCON options. Use the key names already present in your generated file; do not paste a complete configuration from an older guide over a newer template.

ServerGameSettings.json
This file controls gameplay rules. Typical options include PvP or PvE behavior and when castles can take damage. The available keys can change with patches, so preserve the generated structure and change only values you understand.
Wipe scheduling
One community guide describes ResetDaysInterval as an automatic-wipe interval and says that 0 disables wipes. That behavior is not independently verified here. If you use the setting, test it on a disposable world and confirm the current build’s documentation or in-game behavior before relying on it for a live community.

Published community guides disagree about the default ports. Some list UDP 9876 and 9877; others list 27015 and 27016. Because those values conflict, do not blindly copy a port-forwarding rule from a guide.
- Open your generated
ServerHostSettings.jsonand identify the current game and query or listing ports. - Check the server startup log to confirm which ports actually bind.
- Allow those exact ports through the operating-system firewall using the protocol specified by the configuration or log.
- If the server is behind a home router, forward the same ports to the host machine’s fixed local IP address.
- Have a player outside your network test the connection; testing from inside the same LAN can produce misleading results because some routers do not support hairpin connections.
If a port is already occupied, the log normally reports a bind failure. Stop the competing process or choose unused ports in the configuration, then update the firewall and router rules to match. Changing only the router rule or only the JSON file will leave the server unreachable.

Use a repeatable start script
Create a small batch file on Windows or shell script on Linux that launches the server from its install directory. Starting from the correct working directory helps the server find its data and makes logs easier to locate. Keep the script’s paths and the service account consistent with the account used for installation.
Update with validation
Stop the server, back up the save-data directory and configuration, then run:
app_update 1829350 validateStart the server and watch the log for migration messages or configuration errors before allowing players to reconnect. If a patch introduces incompatibility with Wine or a community container, restoring the backup gives you a recovery point while you investigate.
Back up more than the JSON files
- World saves and player data in the server’s save-data directory.
ServerHostSettings.jsonandServerGameSettings.json.- Your start script and any environment or service files.
- A record of the working server build and the configured ports.
Copy backups to storage that is not the same disk as the live server. Test a restore on a separate directory; a backup that has never been restored is only an assumption.
Self-hosting versus managed hosting

Managed hosting is not automatically more reliable: check its backup policy, patch timing, player-slot limits, file access and support boundaries before moving an established world.
Troubleshooting checklist
SteamCMD will not install app 1829350
- Confirm you used anonymous login and the dedicated-server ID
1829350, not the client ID1604030. - Verify that
force_install_dirpoints to a writable, dedicated directory. - Run
app_update 1829350 validateagain after closing duplicate SteamCMD processes. - On Linux, include the Windows platform-force parameter.
The server starts and immediately exits
- Undo the last JSON edit and restore a known-good configuration.
- Launch from the install directory so relative paths resolve correctly.
- Read the log for a malformed JSON file, missing dependency or occupied port.
- On Linux, test Wine with a virtual display and verify that the service account owns the save directories.
Players cannot connect
- Confirm the server is listening on the ports shown in the current configuration and log.
- Open the same ports in the host firewall and forward them to the correct private IP.
- Check that the server is not bound only to a private interface and that the listing or password settings match your intended access.
- Test from an external network rather than relying only on a local connection.
Settings disappear after an update
Move your edited files into the save-data Settings directory and keep backups. Editing only the templates under VRisingServer_Data/StreamingAssets/Settings leaves them vulnerable to replacement during validation or patching.
