Ethereum upgrades change the shared rules that wallets, applications, validators, node operators and rollups use. Most everyday users do not need to do anything when an upgrade activates; the more immediate work falls to node operators, who must run compatible clients. What users notice depends on whether wallets and applications adopt new capabilities—and planned features should not be confused with changes already live on mainnet.
What an Ethereum upgrade changes—and what it does not
A network upgrade, often called a fork, changes Ethereum protocol rules. Those rules govern how transactions and blocks are processed and how network participants coordinate. Because the protocol is shared, an upgrade can affect several groups, but not always in the same way.

- Users may gain wallet capabilities or encounter changes in the services and transaction economics built on Ethereum.
- Application developers need to check whether contracts, integrations and gas estimates behave as expected under the new rules.
- Node operators and stakers need compatible execution- and consensus-layer clients when an upgrade requires them.
- Rollup teams may be affected by changes to Ethereum’s data availability and blob capacity.
A protocol capability is not automatically a feature in every wallet or application. Nor does an upgrade aimed at increasing capacity guarantee lower fees or a specific performance outcome: downstream implementations, demand and final rules matter. Ethereum.org says upgrades tend not to affect end users directly except through improved experiences, security and additional ways to interact with the network (Ethereum roadmap).
Which upgrades are live, and what is still planned?
As of October 7, 2026, Pectra and Fusaka are completed mainnet upgrades. Glamsterdam is in development and testing, not live on Ethereum mainnet. Ethereum.org lists it for Q4 2026, but that is an expected window rather than a confirmed activation date. The Ethereum Foundation scheduled Glamsterdam’s Sepolia testnet activation for October 6, 2026 at 13:53:36 UTC; its announcement said Hoodi and mainnet dates had not been decided. Roadmap dates and unshipped proposals can change (Ethereum roadmap; Ethereum Foundation Glamsterdam testnet announcement).

What Pectra changed for wallets, validators and users
Pectra activated on Ethereum mainnet at epoch 364032 on May 7, 2025 at 10:05 UTC, according to Ethereum.org’s Pectra page. Its most visible wallet-related change is EIP-7702: externally owned accounts (EOAs)—the usual user-controlled account type—can temporarily execute smart-contract code.
That capability can support wallet designs such as transaction batching, fee sponsorship and account recovery. It does not mean every wallet offers those functions, or that they work identically across applications. Users should check their wallet’s own feature and security guidance before using a new account flow.
Pectra also raised the maximum effective validator balance to 2,048 ETH and increased blob throughput. Those changes matter more directly to staking infrastructure and rollup data capacity than to the ordinary act of sending ETH. The details are on Ethereum.org’s Pectra page.

What Fusaka changed for nodes and rollups
Fusaka launched on mainnet on December 3, 2025 (Ethereum.org’s Fusaka page). It introduced PeerDAS (EIP-7594), which lets validators sample blob data instead of requiring every full node to download every blob. The goal is more efficient data availability and room for increased blob capacity used by layer-2 rollups.
The Ethereum Foundation’s 2026 protocol update reports that the mainnet gas limit rose from 30 million to 60 million between Pectra and Fusaka. This is a network-level limit, not a per-transaction allowance and not a promise that transaction fees will fall. The Foundation also reports two Blob Parameter Only forks after Fusaka began increasing blob targets (Ethereum Foundation Protocol Priorities Update for 2026).
For rollup teams, blob parameters and data availability affect the environment for posting data to Ethereum. They do not set a fixed layer-2 fee: rollup design, demand and how a service passes costs on to users also influence what users pay.

What Glamsterdam may change if its proposals ship
Glamsterdam combines execution- and consensus-layer work. Its headlining proposals include enshrined proposer-builder separation (ePBS) and block-level access lists (BALs), which are intended to change how blocks are produced and validated and how transaction dependencies are represented. Ethereum.org describes broader goals that include parallelization, greater capacity and sustainable data and storage pricing (Ethereum.org’s Glamsterdam page).

The page also describes proposed developer-facing changes, including larger contracts and a deterministic factory predeploy, as well as a proposal to reduce intrinsic gas for simple ETH transfers. These are proposals and goals, not guarantees of features or savings on mainnet. Any actual transfer cost will depend on the final rules and transaction conditions.
For the Sepolia testnet activation, the Ethereum Foundation advises application developers to test contracts and gas estimation against the new rules. It also says both execution and consensus client layers need updates for Glamsterdam. Follow the Foundation announcement for the testnet details and later date decisions.

What Hegotá and later roadmap work could mean
Ethereum.org’s security roadmap identifies FOCIL (fork-choice enforced inclusion lists) as a Hegotá headliner targeted for 2027. The proposal is intended to give validators a role in requiring inclusion of valid transactions. That is planned work, not a current user guarantee, and its target timing may change (Ethereum.org security roadmap).

Everyday Ethereum users
Usually, nothing needs to be done just because a protocol upgrade is scheduled. Watch for changes through the wallet or application you use; you do not need a new device or product simply because Ethereum is upgrading.

Application developers
Track the final fork specifications and relevant client releases. Test contracts, integrations and gas estimation against the applicable testnet and fork rules rather than assuming behavior from an earlier network version will remain unchanged. For Glamsterdam, the Foundation specifically calls out contract and gas-estimation testing.
Node operators and stakers
Keep both execution and consensus clients current with versions that support the active fork. A node with incompatible software can fail to follow the upgraded network; consult the relevant client teams’ release guidance for the versions and timing applicable to your setup.
Rollup teams
Monitor blob parameters and data-availability changes, then assess their effects on your own posting strategy and cost model. A change in Ethereum’s capacity environment alone does not establish the fee users will ultimately pay on a rollup.

Quick Recap
How to read upgrade announcements without mistaking plans for results
- Check the status: distinguish a mainnet activation from a testnet deployment, an in-development feature or a roadmap target.
- Identify who is affected: a change for validators or rollup data handling may have no immediate visible effect in a user’s wallet.
- Separate protocol support from product support: a protocol can enable a capability that a wallet or application has not implemented.
- Separate capacity goals from outcomes: higher capacity or a proposed gas change is not, by itself, a fee guarantee.
- Check the date and its certainty: a scheduled testnet date is not a confirmed mainnet date, and roadmap timelines can change.
