On Pixel 6 and later, open Recorder → user icon → Recorder settings, select a transcription language, then tap Detect language. During recording, Recorder will detect the selected language; open a saved recording and tap Transcript to read it.
Turn on language detection
- Open the Recorder app.
- Tap the user icon, then Recorder settings.
- Select the transcription language you want Recorder to detect, then tap Detect language.
- Start recording. To view the result, open the recording and tap Transcript.
Google says that if a session includes more than one language, Recorder transcribes the language spoken most. Follow Google’s transcription instructions if you need to edit a transcript or transcribe a saved recording again.

Check whether your Pixel and language are supported
Recorder availability and automatic language detection have different device requirements: Recorder works on Pixel 3 and later phones and Pixel Tablet, while Google documents the Detect language setup for Pixel 6 and later. Real-time language support also varies by generation.

| Device generation | Real-time transcription languages listed by Google |
|---|---|
| Pixel 3 through Pixel 5a | English (Australia, Ireland, Singapore, United Kingdom, United States), French, German, and Japanese |
| Pixel 6 and later, including Fold | Mandarin Chinese; English (Australia, India, Ireland, Singapore, United Kingdom, United States); French; Canadian French; German; Hindi; Italian; Japanese; Spanish; and Latin American Spanish |
These are Google’s listed real-time languages. The list for transcribing an existing recording again is broader and includes languages such as Bengali, Bulgarian, Czech, Danish, Dutch, Finnish, Hungarian, Indonesian, Korean, Brazilian Portuguese, Russian, Swedish, Turkish, and Vietnamese. To use it, open the recording, tap More → Transcribe again, and choose a language. Google notes that retranscription may process the audio file on Google servers. See Google’s language and transcription details for the full list.

Understand where audio goes
Google says, “Recorder sends audio to an on-device Google service or app to transcribe it. After the audio is transcribed, the Google service or app discards the audio.” That statement describes transcription; it is separate from Google’s notice that retranscribing an existing recording may process its audio file on Google servers. For details, see Google’s recording help and transcription help.
Google documents using Recorder without a Google Account on Pixel 3 and later, including Fold. Recording laws vary by location; Google warns that some places restrict recording or require consent. Get permission where required.

Choose whether to back up recordings
Backup and sync is optional. Recordings stay on the Pixel unless you choose to back them up, share them, copy them to another app, or save them elsewhere. To enable backup:
Recommended Free Tools
- Sign into the Google Account you want to use.
- Open Recorder, tap the user icon, and select that account.
- Open Recorder settings → Back up and sync, then turn it on.
Google says a recording is linked to the selected account when it is created, and that account cannot be changed for the recording later. Backed-up recordings are available at recorder.google.com. They are private to the Google Account by default, and storage is shared across Google services; when the account’s storage is full, new recordings cannot be backed up. See Google’s backup and recordings guidance.
