Linux Foundation uses different environments for course labs and certification exams. For LFS258, learners can use a hosted lab in their browser at no additional cost, or set up supported cloud or local infrastructure themselves. For the exam, the Linux environment is delivered in the browser; you provide the computer, supported browser, internet connection, webcam, and microphone.
What environment is used for Linux Foundation course labs?
There is no single lab setup for every Linux Foundation course. The course determines the environment, and learners may be asked to use a hosted lab, cloud virtual machines, local virtualization, or bare-metal Linux.

LFS258 hosted lab
Linux Foundation Education announced an integrated, in-browser hosted lab for LFS258 on February 12, 2026. It is designed to let learners complete hands-on exercises in a browser regardless of their operating system, at no additional cost. The announcement also says learners can use private infrastructure instead, following the chapter PDF instructions. Read the LFS258 hosted-lab announcement.

Cloud infrastructure
For self-managed LFS258 labs, Linux Foundation guidance identifies AWS EC2 and Google Compute Engine as the best-suited options. Azure VMs, DigitalOcean Droplets, and IBM Cloud Virtual Servers are also workable. The learner provisions and manages the infrastructure, so check the provider’s current pricing, quotas, and free-tier terms before creating resources. See LFS258 cloud-provider guidance.
#1 Best Overall
Other courses may have different instructions. For LFS253, Linux Foundation guidance describes completing exercises on an Ubuntu Google Compute Engine instance, while AWS EC2, DigitalOcean, IBM Cloud, Oracle Cloud, and other Linux instances can work for most exercises. See LFS253 cloud-provider guidance.
Local virtualization or bare metal
LFS258 learners can also use local hypervisors, including VirtualBox, KVM, VMware Workstation or Player, and Hyper-V, to build a lab. Earlier course guidance specifically describes local VirtualBox or VMware multi-node setups. LFS253 guidance also includes native bare-metal Linux and local virtual instances. Check the course instructions for the required topology and resources before choosing a local setup. See LFS258 local virtualization guidance.

Is Minikube enough for LFS258?
Not as a complete substitute for the course lab. Minikube is useful for introductory Kubernetes work, but LFS258 focuses on a multi-node cluster. Linux Foundation forum guidance cautions that Minikube may lack the resources or features needed for all exercises, and its single-node design and automation can cause behavior to differ from the course demonstrations. Use the hosted lab or a suitable multi-node setup for full course coverage. Read the LFS258 Minikube guidance.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWhat environment is used for the certification exam?
The exam environment is separate from the course lab. The cited Linux Foundation exam-details text says candidates are presented with a Linux VM inside the browser through a terminal emulator; they do not need to supply their own Linux installation or exam VM. Candidates must provide a laptop or workstation capable of running Chrome or Chromium, reliable internet, a webcam, and a microphone. Confirm the current hardware and compatibility requirements for your particular exam before scheduling. See the cited Linux Foundation exam details.

Can you use bookmarks, Google, or documentation during the exam?
Do not assume that general web browsing or saved bookmarks are allowed. Linux Foundation forum guidance says the secure browser does not allow external bookmarks. The permitted resources also differ by exam and policy version: one cited CNCF policy version permits one additional Chrome or Chromium tab for specified Kubernetes documentation, GitHub resources, and the Kubernetes blog, while an older Linux Foundation policy allows local man pages, distribution-installed documentation, and distribution packages but prohibits external web pages, course manuals, notes, and other devices.
These policies are not interchangeable. Check the current handbook and exam instructions for the certification you are taking, and follow the rules presented for that exam rather than relying on an older forum answer or policy PDF. Review the Linux Foundation certification handbook. See also the cited CNCF exam policy and Linux Foundation exam requirements.
