The LF-Releng guide also describes organizing a main documentation project with ReadTheDocs subprojects and linking separately built documentation with intersphinx.
How the documentation toolchain fits together
The LF-Releng Project Documentation Guide describes a workflow with four distinct roles:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Sphinx and reStructuredText: the documentation generator and authoring format.
- lfdocs-conf: a convenience package for common documentation dependencies and configuration.
- global-jjb: job templates used to build and publish documentation.
- ReadTheDocs (RTD): the hosted documentation service, with a main project and optional subprojects.
This is the guide’s recommended stack, not a comparison of alternative tools or a claim that these are the only viable choices.
Organize the main documentation site and subprojects
The guide presents a project-level “documentation” project as a gateway or index for a project’s documentation. Individual documentation sets can be configured as ReadTheDocs subprojects beneath that main project, allowing them to appear under a shared project documentation URL.
#1 Best Overall
When documentation is generated separately but needs links to references in another documentation set, the guide recommends Sphinx’s intersphinx extension. In conf.py, configure a mapping from a local namespace to the external documentation URL. This lets Sphinx resolve cross-references across independently built documentation; it does not combine the underlying documentation sets into one build.
Configure ReadTheDocs and CI publishing
The LF-Releng guide describes a setup sequence involving ReadTheDocs project configuration and the project’s CI-management repository. Follow the current service interface and your project’s CI conventions, since the source is a latest-version guide and its operational details may change.

- Used Book in Good Condition
- Create or configure the ReadTheDocs project. The guide specifies an anonymous HTTP Git clone URL for the project repository.
- Grant maintenance access. Add
lf-rtdas a maintainer of the ReadTheDocs project, as described by the guide. - Configure a subproject when needed. For a documentation set that belongs beneath the main project, configure the corresponding ReadTheDocs child project as a subproject.
- Create a generic webhook. Record the project-specific webhook URL and token; the CI job configuration needs these values.
- Set the RTD job values in CI management. Add the required values to
project.yamlin the project’sci-managementrepository, following the project’s established configuration and the current LF-Releng instructions. - Trigger a remerge if applicable. If the relevant
lfdocs-confpatches have already merged, the guide says to issue a remerge so the publishing job can push documentation to ReadTheDocs.
The guide identifies the webhook URL and token as project-specific; it does not provide universal values that can be copied between projects. Consult the complete LF-Releng setup guide for its exact configuration context.
What to verify before publishing
- Confirm that the repository’s clone URL is accessible in the manner required by the project’s ReadTheDocs configuration.
- Check that the intended main project and any child documentation projects are associated correctly.
- Verify the current webhook URL, token, and CI job settings rather than relying on values from another project.
- Confirm whether a remerge is needed for the project’s merged
lfdocs-confchanges and publishing job.
