Those measurements can help software assess cell condition, but they are not a standalone health verdict: temperature, state of charge, chemistry, mechanical stress and the measurement setup all affect impedance.
What EIS measures in a battery
EIS measures a cell’s frequency-dependent electrical response. A battery-management system applies or uses an alternating excitation, then measures the resulting voltage and current. Comparing their amplitude and phase across frequencies lets the system estimate impedance. Synchronizing the voltage and current measurements matters because their phase relationship is part of the measurement. ST’s L9965x application note describes the measurement blocks, while Texas Instruments’ EIS white paper discusses synchronized measurements across pack-monitor devices.

How an EIS-capable IC checks cell condition
1. Excitation produces a response
The system drives a small AC-like signal through the cell, or uses an existing system source to provide excitation. TI identifies possible sources such as a converter, charger, balancer, precharge circuit or inverter. The required excitation depends on the cell and measurement design; it is not simply a feature of the IC in isolation.
Outdated Drivers Are Slowing You Down
One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchWindows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstall2. Synchronized sensing captures voltage and current
Voltage and current measurements must be acquired in coordination so the system can preserve the response’s amplitude and phase at each frequency. The overall design therefore includes an excitation source, sensing circuitry and acquisition control as well as the battery-management IC.
#1 Best Overall
- MULTI PURPOSE USE- can be used to test different type of household batteries like AA, AAA, C, D, 1.5V,9V and 1.5V button type
- REQUIRE NO BATTERY- activated by the battery being checked, no battery needed for operation
- SIMPLE BUT EFFECTIVE- compact size and lightweight, portable effective battery tester, a must buy for anyone who uses regular or rechargeable batteries on a regular basis
- EASY TO USE- identify battery status simply by the analog display needle, "good" (green), "low" (yellow), and "replace/recharge" (red)
- NOTE : 1. You can simply test battery voltage to determine whether the capacity of the battery is low or high. It won't directly detect the battery capacity precisely 2. Don't forget: The Battery Tester is activated by the battery being checked. Keep test times as short as possible to avoid unnecessary battery drain.
3. Software interprets the impedance data
Impedance data can contribute to state-of-health and state-of-charge estimation, cell characterization and diagnostics. The IC enables measurement and may provide calculated values, but application firmware and a model calibrated for the cell determine how those measurements become an estimate. EIS does not inherently produce a definitive remaining-life percentage. See Analog Devices’ CN0510 reference design and Keysight’s EIS white paper for further technical context.
Why one impedance reading cannot decide battery health
Impedance changes with more than aging. ST identifies temperature, state of charge, state of health and mechanical stress as influences. Cell chemistry and measurement conditions also matter when comparing results. A useful assessment therefore compares measurements taken under known, suitably controlled conditions against a cell-specific model or baseline. The cited sources do not establish a universal impedance threshold for passing or failing a cell.

How EIS implementations differ
Published ranges and accuracy figures describe particular products or solutions, not a universal limit for battery EIS. The examples below are vendor specifications and implementation descriptions, not an independent head-to-head test.
| Implementation | What the cited source establishes | What to compare for a design |
|---|---|---|
| TI BQ79881-Q1 | TI lists an excitation range of 0.01 Hz–3.5 kHz and 1% impedance accuracy with 1 A excitation for impedance above 200 µΩ on its product information page. | Cell and pack topology, frequency range, excitation interface, synchronization, and accuracy conditions. TI product information. |
| TI BQ79826Z-Q1 | TI lists EIS engines and pack/cell monitoring resources, and an EIS evaluation module for this device. | Channel count, excitation and sensing path, software and documentation access. TI product information. |
| ST L9965x implementation | ST’s application note demonstrates an EIS setup on a five-cell pack using the L9965x family. | Excitation and sensing arrangement, controller integration and target pack. ST application note. |
| NXP BMS-EIS and BMA7418 | NXP describes a 0.1–1 kHz EIS solution with synchronization; its BMA7418 product page lists an EIS-capable 18-channel cell controller. | Channel coverage, synchronization, excitation approach, safety requirements and software access. NXP BMS-EIS and BMA7418. |
For a specific design, check the current device datasheet and design guide against the target chemistry, pack topology, operating temperature, excitation current and safety requirements. Vendor specifications should be read with their stated test conditions and qualification context.

Embedded EIS versus a laboratory instrument
An embedded battery-management IC is intended to fit into a battery system’s monitoring and control architecture. A laboratory instrument is a different class of equipment, intended for characterization or testing rather than being the pack’s monitoring IC. For context, Tektronix lists a 1 mHz–10 kHz range and 20 measurement channels for its EA-BIM 20000 series battery impedance meter. Those are instrument specifications, not a claim about embedded IC capability. Tektronix product page.

What to evaluate before choosing an EIS-capable IC
- Frequency coverage: Match the device’s specified range to the impedance features and diagnostic method your application needs.
- Excitation and sensing: Determine how excitation is generated, what current is available, and how voltage and current are measured and synchronized.
- Accuracy conditions: Read the conditions attached to each accuracy specification, including excitation current and impedance range.
- System fit: Check cell-channel coverage, pack topology, controller integration and safety requirements.
- Interpretation support: Establish how firmware, calibration and a chemistry-appropriate model will turn the measurements into useful diagnostics.
- Prototype needs: Analog Devices’ CN0510 documentation links its battery EIS circuit to the EVAL-AD5941BATZ measurement board; it is evaluation hardware for prototyping, not a ready-made consumer battery checker.
