Entering a special character means inserting a character that is not readily available from the currently selected keyboard key or layout. Depending on the character and the app, you can switch layouts, use a keyboard shortcut, enter a character code, select it from a character picker, or use a language input method.
What counts as a special character?
“Special character” is a practical label, not a single technical category. It can mean punctuation or symbols such as an em dash (—) or copyright sign (©), an accented letter, or a character from another writing system. A character that is difficult to reach on one keyboard may be ordinary on another layout or in another language. Unicode distinguishes the key event a user makes from the encoded character software receives; for example, a key combination can result in the character U+0054, “T.” Unicode’s technical introduction explains this distinction.

Which method should you use?
- You know how the character looks, but not its code: use a character picker or character map and select it visually.
- You need accented letters often: add a keyboard layout or input source suited to the language instead of looking up each letter separately.
- You know the Unicode value: use a code-entry method supported by your operating system and the target app.
- You need one symbol in a document: an app-specific symbol picker or shortcut may be quickest.
Check that the method works in the application where you are typing. A code or shortcut supported in one program may not work elsewhere.

How to enter special characters by platform
Windows
For an occasional character, Microsoft recommends Character Map: choose a character available in the selected font, copy it, and paste it into your document. The available choices depend on that font. Windows keyboard tips also point users to keyboard and input-layout settings and the emoji and symbols panel for characters such as an em dash or copyright sign. Exact options can depend on Windows version and keyboard settings.

Microsoft’s accessibility instructions describe using Character Map to select and copy a character. They also give a Unicode-value workflow involving the numeric keypad with Num Lock enabled; follow the support page’s steps rather than treating it as a universal Windows shortcut: Windows keyboard and text tools.
Microsoft Word
In supported versions of Word, type a Unicode hexadecimal code and press Alt+X to convert it to the character. Microsoft documents that the code may be preceded by “U+” in this workflow. Word also supports ASCII entry using the numeric keypad with Num Lock on. These are Word-specific instructions, not interchangeable with each other or guaranteed to work in every Windows application. See Microsoft’s guides to character codes in Word and ASCII and Unicode symbols and characters.

macOS
For many accented letters, press and hold the relevant letter key—such as “a”—to show the accent menu, then choose the character. Apple also recommends Character Viewer for browsing and inserting characters. If you regularly type in Latin-script languages, Apple notes that the ABC – Extended input source can support ongoing accented-letter entry. See Apple’s instructions for entering accented characters on Mac.

Linux desktops
On GNOME and some other GTK desktop environments, the Unicode FAQ documents this sequence: press Ctrl+Shift+U, release the keys, type the hexadecimal value, then press Space or Enter. The FAQ says KDE and other Qt desktop environments did not have an equivalent function when it was written. Desktop behavior can change by environment and version, so check the documentation for your current setup before relying on the shortcut.
iPhone, iPad, and Android
The Unicode FAQ says iOS and Android do not provide an official built-in hexadecimal-code entry method; third-party keyboards may offer one. For ordinary use, the platform keyboard, language keyboard, or an app’s symbol picker is usually the more direct route. Available characters and controls vary by operating system, keyboard, and app.

Unicode codes, ASCII codes, and keyboard layouts are different
A Unicode hexadecimal value identifies a character in Unicode. Word’s Alt+X workflow converts such a value inside supported versions of Word. ASCII numeric entry is a separate method documented by Microsoft for Word, and Windows Character Map’s numeric-keypad workflow is another set of instructions. They are not universal variants of one shortcut. A keyboard layout or input source works differently again: it changes how keys produce characters, making frequent language-specific typing easier.

What to check when a character will not appear
- Confirm the app: a shortcut may be limited to a particular program, such as Word.
- Check the code format and method: Unicode hexadecimal entry, ASCII numeric entry, and layout-based typing follow different rules.
- Check the selected font: Character Map displays characters available in that font, and a font may not contain every glyph.
- Verify the input source or desktop environment: code-entry behavior differs across operating systems and Linux desktop environments.
- For frequent typing, reconsider the layout: a language keyboard or input source can be more practical than repeatedly inserting individual characters.
