Current spending signals point to cloud and AI infrastructure as major investment areas, while digital transformation and gaps in specialist skills sustain demand for consulting and managed services. But aggregate IT spending is only a backdrop: clients can increase investment in priority areas while delaying or narrowing other projects, so providers do not all benefit equally.
What is driving demand for IT services?
Cloud and AI infrastructure investment
Organizations building AI capabilities need infrastructure, cloud platforms, and systems that can support intelligent applications. Gartner’s July 27, 2026 forecast puts worldwide IT spending at $6.37 trillion in 2026, a forecast increase of 14.2% from 2025. That total spans many IT categories, not services alone. Gartner says data center systems and infrastructure as a service (IaaS) are its top growth segments, reflecting investment in AI infrastructure, cloud platforms, and intelligent applications. That investment can create work for service providers: planning architectures, integrating systems, migrating applications, implementing platforms, and managing them after launch. This is a practical connection between infrastructure spending and service work, not a separately quantified forecast of provider revenue.
Transformation and reinvention programs
Clients also hire outside providers to change how their organizations use technology, rather than simply maintain existing systems. Accenture reported continued client demand for large-scale reinvention and AI transformation programs in its Q3 FY2026 filing. This is an example of one provider’s reported demand, not an industry-wide survey. See Accenture’s Q3 FY2026 filing.

Skills, capacity, and operational needs
Some businesses lack the staff, expertise, or resources to manage complex technology environments internally. A 2025 issuer annual report describes smaller businesses relying on specialists to deploy, manage, and secure their IT, and notes providers’ use of managed-services models. Read the annual report.
Managed services can meet an ongoing operational need, while consulting and transformation projects are often tied to a defined change initiative. Both can be supported by technology investment, but they respond to different client priorities and may not grow at the same rate.

How does client spending translate into provider results?
Market-wide forecasts and individual provider results measure different things. Gartner’s forecast describes expected spending across broad IT categories. A provider’s revenue, bookings, or guidance reflects its own service mix, customer base, and reporting period. Neither measure alone proves that every IT services firm is seeing stronger demand.

Accenture’s FY2026 Q4 filing illustrates why service-line distinctions matter: the company reported 5% consulting revenue growth and 8% managed-services revenue growth for that period. Those figures describe Accenture in that quarter; they are not industry growth rates. See Accenture’s FY2026 Q4 filing.

Higher aggregate spending does not mean clients have unlimited budgets. Gartner identifies inflation, supply shortages, rising hardware and memory costs, AI initiatives, and shifting priorities as sources of budget strain. IDC’s 2026 outlook commentary likewise describes cost-driven moderation and selective reprioritization. See IDC’s global ICT spending outlook.

When costs or priorities change, clients may protect spending on a strategic AI or cloud initiative while postponing other work, reducing a project’s scope, or shifting resources to existing operations. That is a plausible provider-level effect of budget pressure and reprioritization, not a quantified outcome established for all providers. A firm concentrated in delayed project work may therefore experience a different pattern from one with more ongoing service contracts.

How to read signals about IT services demand
- Check what the number covers. A worldwide IT-spending forecast includes categories beyond IT services and should not be treated as a direct forecast of provider revenue.
- Separate forecast from reported result. Gartner’s figures are forecasts; Accenture’s percentages are reported company results for a specified quarter.
- Look at the service line. Consulting, transformation, and managed services serve different needs and can move at different rates.
- Consider the client’s budget mix. Rising investment in AI or cloud can coexist with tighter project scopes or delays elsewhere.
- Keep the time period and source attached. Figures from different publication dates or reporting periods are not interchangeable.
