Google-affiliated researchers propose a way to reduce a specific kind of benchmark overfitting in self-improving AI agents: repeatedly tweaking an agent’s software harness against a finite set of tests can produce changes that look successful there but fail on unfamiliar tasks. Their method, Regularized Recursive Self-Improvement of Agent Harnesses (RRSI), constrains how changes are proposed and selected while keeping the underlying AI model fixed.
What does “memorizing tests” mean here?
The concern is adaptive overfitting. An agent-development loop proposes changes to an agent, measures them against a finite benchmark, and favors changes that score well. After many rounds, it can favor benchmark-specific patterns—or noisy improvements that do not hold up elsewhere.

In this work, the editable object is the agent’s harness: the surrounding software and instructions that govern how a fixed model works. The harness can include prompts, control flow, tool interfaces, memory, skills, and context management. RRSI is not a method for preventing a model from memorizing data during training, nor does it have the model rewrite or retrain its own weights. Read the RRSI paper.
How RRSI tries to limit overfitting
RRSI regularizes the search for harness changes rather than banning whole categories of changes. Its controls operate at two points: when candidate edits are proposed and when those edits are evaluated and selected.

Constrain which edits are proposed
- Shrink the edit budget over time. As the process continues, proposed changes are bounded more tightly.
- Use the history of results. Earlier gains and regressions inform later proposals, rather than treating every round as a fresh search.
- Redirect stalled searches. When progress stalls, proposals are steered toward components that have received less exploration.
Apply stricter tests before accepting changes
- Screen for benchmark-specific logic. A leakage critic checks candidate diffs before they are evaluated, looking for logic tailored to the benchmark.
- Require gains to clear a noise floor. A small score change is not enough if it could be measurement noise.
- Account for inference-token cost. A change that uses more policy tokens needs to justify that extra cost with its performance.
- Prune components that no longer help. The method identifies harness components that have stopped contributing.
The project page’s shorthand for the design is “Regularize the search, not the harness”: harness parts remain editable, but the process that searches for and accepts changes is more constrained. See the RRSI project page.
What the authors report
The researchers evaluate RRSI across eight benchmarks in three areas: coding, agentic workspace tasks, and engineering design. They distinguish the benchmarks used to evolve the harness from held-out benchmarks used to assess transfer. The figures below are the authors’ reported results for their experimental setup, not guarantees for other agents or deployments.

| Reported result | What it describes |
|---|---|
| Up to 14.1 points | Maximum reported gain on the evolve split, in the paper’s evaluation. |
| Up to 4.7 points | Maximum reported gain on five out-of-distribution benchmarks, as reported in the paper. |
| 30% fewer policy tokens per trial | Reported comparison with unregularized evolution in the authors’ setup. |
| 3.4-point average gain | Project-page summary across six held-out benchmarks; the page says all six improved. |
| 4.0-point average gain | Project-page summary across the three benchmarks used for evolution. |
The paper and project page summarize results at different levels: the paper is the source for the experimental framing and detailed comparisons, while the project page gives headline averages. These figures should be read with their stated benchmark scope, not as a single universal improvement rate. Paper (dated September 25, 2026); project page.
What the results do—and do not—show
The reported held-out results are evidence that, in the authors’ tests, the method transferred beyond the evolve set while using fewer policy tokens than unregularized evolution. They do not establish that RRSI always prevents overfitting, eliminates benchmark leakage, or improves every agent in real-world use. The work also does not show that model-training contamination is solved: it addresses adaptive fitting in the process of evolving an agent harness.

For readers assessing the claim, the key distinction is between a score increase on the tests used to make changes and improvement on tests held back from that process. RRSI’s purpose is to make the latter more credible, not to make benchmark scores immune to overfitting.
