If transfers stall, congestion builds or a link fails, GPUs can wait instead of computing. As clusters grow, buyers invest in the switches, network interfaces, processors and optical links that keep data moving and make expensive compute resources more productive.
Why AI workloads need more networking
Training and large-scale inference distribute work across accelerators. During training, collective operations coordinate that work by exchanging data among GPUs. The resulting east-west traffic—data moving between devices inside a cluster—makes network behavior part of the workload, not just a way to connect machines. NVIDIA describes AI factories as spanning tens of thousands of GPUs and scaling further; that is the vendor’s description of its target systems, not a neutral census of deployed clusters. A cluster’s performance therefore depends on more than the peak compute specification of its accelerators. The fabric must carry a large volume of traffic while delivering predictable communication across many devices. If it cannot, adding accelerators may not translate into a proportional improvement in completed work.
What makes network performance valuable
Keeping accelerators productive
In synchronous training, workers coordinate at regular points, so a late transfer can hold up progress elsewhere. OpenAI explains that a delay among many transfers can ripple through a job: “One transfer arriving late can ripple through the entire job, potentially causing GPUs to sit idle.” That is why buyers care not only about peak bandwidth but also about latency, congestion behavior, load balancing and consistency under load. Managing congestion and failures at scale
More endpoints and transfers create more opportunities for congestion, link interruptions and device failures to affect a job. OpenAI says its Multipath Reliable Connection (MRC) spreads a transfer across multiple paths and can route around failures. The company says it has deployed MRC on its largest NVIDIA GB200 supercomputers; this is an account of OpenAI’s deployment, not a general performance guarantee for other networks. OpenAI MRC
These demands favor fabrics designed for resilience and efficient use of available paths, as well as switches with enough capacity to connect many devices. Higher capacity alone does not ensure reliable performance: topology, congestion handling, software and operational practices matter too.

Which parts of the AI network create chip demand
“AI networking chips” covers several roles rather than one component. Scale-up links connect accelerators closely, often within a system or rack; scale-out fabrics connect systems across a cluster; scale-across networks link distributed sites. A complete networking platform may include switch silicon and systems, network interface products, infrastructure processors, software and optical connections. A merchant switch ASIC is one part of that stack, not a complete fabric or AI rack. NVIDIA networking overview

Capacity and the number of supported connections shape how a fabric can be built.
- Network interface products: connect servers and accelerators to the fabric and handle network traffic at the endpoints.
- Infrastructure processors and software: support network functions and the management of traffic across the platform.
- Optical connectivity: carries data over links where optical technology is used, and becomes part of the design as capacity and distance requirements grow.

How Ethernet, InfiniBand and scale-up approaches differ
There is no single uncontested fabric choice in the available evidence. NVIDIA describes NVLink for scale-up, Quantum InfiniBand and Spectrum-X Ethernet as scale-out options, and Spectrum-XGS for scale-across between data centers. In a separate announced collaboration, OpenAI and Broadcom emphasized standards-based Ethernet for scale-up and scale-out in planned custom accelerator systems. These examples reflect different platform strategies, not a universal buyer preference. NVIDIA networking overview · OpenAI and Broadcom announcement
| Approach | Role described in the sources | What to evaluate |
|---|---|---|
| NVLink | NVIDIA scale-up connectivity | How it integrates with the selected accelerators, system design and software. |
| InfiniBand | NVIDIA scale-out fabric option | Workload communication patterns, latency and throughput needs, operations and interoperability. |
| Ethernet | NVIDIA Spectrum-X scale-out option; also the standards-based fabric emphasized in OpenAI and Broadcom’s announced system collaboration | Congestion and failure handling, ecosystem, interoperability, power, topology and operating skills. |
| Spectrum-XGS | NVIDIA scale-across option for linking multiple data centers | Whether the workload and deployment need a fabric spanning distributed sites. |
The sources do not provide an independent, apples-to-apples comparison of total system cost or cost-performance across these approaches. Buyers must weigh workload fit, bandwidth and latency, resilience, software and accelerator integration, interoperability, power and cooling, deployment complexity and total system cost for their own environment.

Why power, optics and system capacity matter
As network capacity rises, power and cooling become design constraints alongside performance. NVIDIA describes silicon photonics and co-packaged optics as part of its next-generation approach, and says its Spectrum-6 system supports both pluggable and co-packaged optics as well as liquid cooling. Those are vendor-described product characteristics; they do not establish the same efficiency outcome in every deployment. NVIDIA Spectrum-6 announcement

What announced deployments say—and do not say—about demand
OpenAI and Broadcom announced a collaboration covering 10 gigawatts of custom AI accelerators and network systems. The announcement said the racks would use Broadcom Ethernet and other connectivity for scale-up and scale-out, with initial deployments targeted for the second half of 2026 and completion by the end of 2029. This is the announced scope and schedule of a specific collaboration, not a market-wide demand estimate or proof that the full deployment has occurred. OpenAI and Broadcom, October 13, 2025
Such plans illustrate why networking demand can rise alongside accelerator deployments: more AI systems require more capacity to connect them. They do not, by themselves, establish the size of the overall market, a neutral industry forecast or which networking architecture will prevail.
