Start with the company’s own definition of “Data Center,” then measure that segment as a share of total revenue across several periods. Next test whether it earns operating income and whether supply, customer funding, and data-center infrastructure can support continued shipments. A segment label is an accounting category—not a universal measure of AI-chip sales or a guarantee that customer demand will become usable capacity.
1. Find out what the company counts as Data Center
Read the segment note in the latest 10-K and 10-Q before using a headline revenue figure. Record the products included, and whether accelerators are reported separately or combined with server CPUs, networking, and other products. Company-defined segments differ, so do not assume two issuers’ Data Center figures measure the same product mix.

AMD’s Q2 2026 Form 10-Q says its Data Center segment primarily includes AI accelerators, server CPUs, GPUs, APUs, DPUs, AI network interface cards, FPGAs, and adaptive SoCs. Its segment revenue therefore is not a clean proxy for AI accelerator sales alone. See AMD’s Q2 2026 Form 10-Q.
NVIDIA’s Q2 FY2027 filing describes data-center products for accelerated computing and AI solutions. That description does not establish a standardized category comparable to AMD’s. For each company, preserve the issuer’s own label and scope rather than treating the reported figures as like-for-like. See NVIDIA’s Q2 FY2027 Form 10-Q.

2. Measure revenue exposure and its direction
For each reporting period, calculate segment revenue divided by total company revenue. Keep quarterly figures with quarterly figures, and annual with annual; label any trailing-twelve-month calculation explicitly. Compare several periods to see whether exposure is growing persistently or changed in one quarter. Fiscal calendars differ, so align the periods and identify each company’s fiscal quarter.
AMD reported $6.718 billion in Data Center revenue and $11.536 billion in total revenue for Q2 2026, the quarter ended June 27, 2026. Dividing the segment figure by total revenue gives approximately 58.2%—a calculation from AMD’s reported figures, not a company-published statistic. The same filing reports $3.240 billion of Data Center revenue in Q2 2025. These are reported quarterly results, not a forecast. AMD Q2 2026 Form 10-Q.
3. Check whether exposure is profitable
Revenue growth alone does not show the economic quality of a segment. Where the company reports segment operating income or loss, track it alongside revenue. Separately examine consolidated gross-margin trends and management’s explanation of product mix. Do not infer a segment margin from a company-wide margin: they are different measures.

AMD reported Q2 2026 Data Center operating income of $2.103 billion. Its August 4, 2026 earnings presentation said comparable non-GAAP gross margin increased by more than 200 basis points year over year, driven by higher Data Center revenue mix. That is a consolidated gross-margin statement, not a Data Center segment margin. The comparison also needs context: AMD’s Q2 2025 included $800 million in inventory and related charges due to U.S. government export controls on Instinct MI308 products. Keep the non-GAAP comparison distinct from the reported segment operating-income figure. AMD Q2 2026 Form 10-Q; AMD Q2 2026 Financial Results slides.
4. Test whether demand can turn into delivered systems
Chip demand and installed, usable customer capacity are not the same thing. Review disclosures about manufacturing and packaging capacity, product transitions, customer concentration, and deployment timing. Consider whether shipments depend on customers completing data centers with adequate power, land, construction, and capital.
NVIDIA’s Q2 FY2027 filing said Blackwell accounted for most system shipments, Rubin production shipments began in Q3 FY2027, and the company was experiencing supply constraints. It also described potential delays tied to infrastructure shortages or limited customer capital. These disclosures are useful checks on execution and timing, not proof that a particular shipment or buildout will occur. NVIDIA put one constraint plainly: “The availability of land, power, shell, and capital is crucial to support the buildout of a full data center inclusive of NVIDIA AI infrastructure by our customers and partners.” NVIDIA Q2 FY2027 Form 10-Q.

5. Read commitments, cash flow, and customer financing terms
Look beyond reported shipments. Check inventory, receivables, purchase and long-term supply commitments, customer payment terms, guarantees, and partner financing arrangements. These can change cash timing and risk even when the headline revenue trend looks strong. Distinguish disclosed binding commitments from preliminary arrangements or management expectations, and read the terms rather than treating every agreement as an ordinary chip sale.
NVIDIA disclosed AI-cloud agreements, long-term infrastructure leases and guarantees, and partner commitments. Its filings also discuss rising manufacturing commitments and arrangements that may affect financial results. Follow the specific terms and accounting disclosures to understand which party bears obligations and when cash or revenue may be affected. NVIDIA Q2 FY2027 Form 10-Q.

Reported customer location is not always the same as where end customers use the products. NVIDIA’s FY2026 Form 10-K estimated that 76% of Data Center revenue from Taiwan-headquartered customers was attributable to end customers in the United States and Europe. This is a company estimate for that fiscal year and that customer-headquarters group—not a general allocation rule for all Data Center sales. NVIDIA changed to customer-headquarters-based geography in Q3 FY2026 and recast prior periods. NVIDIA FY2026 Form 10-K.
7. Compare companies only on defined axes
A comparison is useful when it makes the differences in reporting visible. Put each issuer’s own segment definition beside the numbers, and avoid implying strict comparability where categories differ.
- Scope: Which products and services are included, and are accelerators separated from CPUs or networking?
- Revenue mix: What share of total revenue is in the segment, and how has that share changed over several consistently labeled periods?
- Profitability: What segment operating result is reported, and what does the company say is driving consolidated margin changes?
- Concentration and transitions: What do filings say about major customers, product generations, or deployment dependence?
- Delivery constraints: What risks are disclosed around supply, manufacturing, infrastructure, power, construction, and customer capital?
- Commitments and financing: What contracts, guarantees, leases, or partner arrangements may affect obligations and cash timing?
There is no established sector-wide percentage that defines “high” data-center exposure. These disclosures support a company-by-company analysis; they do not by themselves establish valuation, expected stock returns, or market share.
