First identify which Xbox situation you have
The right fix depends on where the message appears. Before changing anything, classify the failure by audience and software path.

Developer fix: enable the PC platform and publish it
For a GDK title, Microsoft’s prescribed sequence has two separate publication actions. Saving a setting is not the same as making it available in the development sandbox.
- Open the correct product in Partner Center. Sign in with an account that has permission to edit the product, then select the title associated with the failing GDK test.
- Open Xbox services and Xbox Settings. In the product’s Xbox configuration, locate the platform options for the title.
- Enable “Windows 10 and later PC.” The platform must be explicitly added or enabled. The error’s documented cause is that this PC platform was not added in Partner Center.
- Save the Xbox Settings. This records the configuration, but it does not yet make the change active in the development sandbox.
- Open Gameplay settings. Use the product’s Gameplay settings page and choose the command that publishes those settings to the development sandbox.
- Confirm that publishing completes. Do not close the workflow after saving Xbox Settings; the explicit publish step is required. Microsoft warns that saving alone is insufficient.
- Wait approximately 30 minutes. Microsoft lists about 30 minutes for the configuration to propagate. Treat that as an approximate service-propagation interval, not a guaranteed exact deadline.
- Retry the title sign-in. Restart the test process or title session after the propagation period so it requests fresh service state.
Why the publish step is easy to miss
Partner Center separates editing a product’s configuration from publishing Gameplay settings to a sandbox. A saved checkbox can therefore look correct in the portal while the sandbox still uses the previous configuration. If the platform is enabled but the test continues to return 0x87DD0005, verify the publication history and the selected sandbox before changing code or reinstalling tools.

What to verify if the developer fix does not work
- Confirm that you edited the same Partner Center product represented by the title build you are running.
- Check that “Windows 10 and later PC” is enabled for that product, not only another platform.
- Confirm that Gameplay settings were explicitly published to the development sandbox after the change.
- Allow the stated propagation interval to pass before judging the result.
- Make sure the test is pointed at the intended development sandbox rather than a different sandbox or environment.
- Review the title’s Store association and other title-configuration values, because Microsoft’s older troubleshooting guidance also identifies an unassociated or unexpected title as a possible configuration condition.
If those checks are correct and the code persists, collect the title, sandbox, platform, publication time, and exact sign-in step for the team responsible for the Partner Center configuration. The code alone cannot identify which individual title setting is wrong.
Consumer troubleshooting: Xbox app or Microsoft Store on PC
Microsoft’s GDK table is not a complete consumer error dictionary. For a retail PC user, use a conservative sequence that tests the service and identity path before touching hardware.

- Check Xbox service status. A service interruption can prevent authentication, licensing, or title-service calls even when Windows itself is working. If Microsoft reports an incident, retry after the incident is resolved rather than repeatedly reinstalling the game.
- Confirm the account in both apps. Open the Microsoft Store and the Xbox app and verify that they use the same Microsoft account. A mismatch can leave the Store with one entitlement while the Xbox app requests services with another identity.
- Sign out and sign in again. Sign out of the Xbox app, sign out of the Microsoft Store, close both applications, reopen them, and authenticate with the account that owns the game or subscription. This refreshes the app sessions and their service tokens.
- Retry the exact action that failed. Record whether the error occurs at app sign-in, game launch, entitlement verification, or an online-service connection. That distinction helps separate an identity problem from a single title’s configuration.
- Check whether the failure is title-specific. If another supported game signs in normally but one title returns the code, the affected title’s service or licensing configuration is more suspect than your PC hardware.
- Allow for transient service conditions. A browser login can succeed while the Xbox app still has a stale or rejected service token. Web authentication and in-app Xbox service authentication are related but not identical paths.
Why a browser sign-in can work while the Xbox app fails
A browser proves that the account can complete a web authentication flow. The Xbox app must also obtain and use service tokens for Xbox identity, licensing, and the title being launched. Those later requests can fail because of a service incident, an expired local session, an account mismatch between Store and Xbox, or title-specific configuration. Therefore, “I can sign in on the website” narrows the problem but does not clear the Xbox app’s service path.
What not to do first
- Do not replace hardware. The documented mapping describes a service or title-configuration failure. Replacing a GPU, motherboard, controller, cable, or other component is not supported by this code as a first diagnosis.
- Do not assume the account is permanently broken. The code can be produced by a missing platform configuration or a temporary service and token condition.
- Do not treat a reinstall as the primary fix. Reinstalling a game does not enable a platform in Partner Center or publish Gameplay settings. It also does not automatically repair a service outage or account mismatch.
- Do not confuse saved settings with published settings. For a GDK title, the explicit Gameplay-settings publication is a required step.
- Do not apply developer instructions to a retail account. Partner Center changes affect a title owner’s product and sandbox, not an ordinary player’s personal Xbox profile.
How to decide whether the account, PC, or title is at fault
Evidence pointing to title configuration
- The failure occurs only in a GDK development build.
- The title was recently added to a product, moved between environments, or had platform settings changed.
- Partner Center lacks Windows 10 and later PC support or the settings were saved but not published.
- The error begins immediately at title sign-in and remains after the documented propagation interval.
Evidence pointing to account or service authentication
- The error appears in the ordinary Xbox app rather than a development sandbox.
- Store and Xbox are signed in with different accounts.
- Xbox service status shows an incident or degraded service.
- Signing out of both apps and signing back in changes the behavior.
Evidence pointing to a local Windows issue
A local issue becomes more plausible only when separate evidence shows that the Xbox services are healthy, the account is consistent, and other titles or sign-in actions work differently on the same machine. Even then, 0x87DD0005 alone does not identify a defective component. Diagnose a specific Windows or network failure before considering repair or replacement.

When to escalate
Escalate a developer case to the title or platform administrator with the product name, sandbox name, PC-platform setting, time of publication, time of the retry, and exact operation that returned the code. Escalate a consumer case through Microsoft’s Xbox or Store support route after recording the account used in each app, the service-status result, whether sign-out/sign-in changed anything, and whether the failure affects one title or multiple titles. This information is more useful than reporting only the hexadecimal number.
Bottom line
0x87DD0005 is not a reliable signal that your PC needs new hardware or that your Microsoft account is irreparably damaged. In the documented GDK scenario, it means the Windows 10 and later PC platform was not enabled in Partner Center; enable it, publish Gameplay settings to the development sandbox, wait about 30 minutes, and retry. In ordinary Xbox app use, treat the code as an authentication, licensing, service, or title condition: check service status, align the Store and Xbox accounts, refresh both sign-in sessions, and investigate the affected title before considering any system repair.
