“Word of finger” is an uncommon expression for interpersonal communication through digital media, especially messages typed on a keyboard. It is a playful analogue of “word of mouth”: news or recommendations passed by speaking become messages typed and shared digitally.

What does “word of finger” mean?

A dictionary-derived English entry defines the phrase as “Interpersonal communication by digital media, especially using keyboard devices.” It treats the expression as an uncountable noun. In everyday terms, it describes information or recommendations passed from person to person through digital messages rather than spoken conversation.

The phrase is built by analogy with “word of mouth.” It swaps the mouth associated with speech for the finger used to type, making it a concise, mildly humorous label for digitally shared communication.

How is the phrase used?

In an uncorrected House of Commons Welsh Affairs Committee transcript dated 19 May 2009, a discussion turned to information circulating locally. Alun Michael interjected, “Word of finger, perhaps!” Paul Murphy replied that “The message gets around locally at ward level in local government terms, if you like.” The exchange illustrates the pun in context; because the transcript is labelled uncorrected evidence, it should be treated as an exchange recorded in the transcript, not an approved verbatim account. Two published examples cited in a Wiktionary-derived entry show the digital sense in print. Advertising Age used “Word-of-mouth has now become word of finger” on 9 November 2009. Greater Lansing Business Monthly wrote on 2 February 2010: “Social media is the new word of mouth, only now, it is word of finger, and instantaneously can go worldwide.” These are documented examples, not evidence that the phrase is common. See the cited entry.

Is “word of finger” the same as “word of mouth”?

They are related by analogy, but refer to different ways of communicating. “Word of mouth” ordinarily means information or recommendations passed by speaking. “Word of finger” recasts that idea as interpersonal communication carried by digital media, particularly typed messages. It is not a standard substitute for “word of mouth” in every context; its uncommon, playful character makes it most suitable when the contrast between spoken and typed communication is relevant.

Does the phrase date back to 1892?

A separate 1892 citation contains the wording “by word of finger” in a story about a deaf boy reciting to a teacher. That is an older use of similar words in a different context; it does not establish that the modern digital idiom existed in 1892 or that there is a continuous history between the two uses. The entry records the older citation.
