If an external SSD isn’t showing up on a Steam Deck or ROG Ally, first connect it directly with a known-good data cable and check whether it works on another computer. On the ROG Ally, use Windows Disk Management to see whether the drive is offline or simply missing a drive letter. Don’t format or create a volume unless you’re certain the drive contains no files you need.
1. Check the cable, port, and hub first
Disconnect unnecessary accessories, then plug the SSD straight into the handheld rather than through a dock or USB hub. Inspect the USB-C connector, cable, and port for visible damage or looseness. If possible, try another data-capable cable, another port, and flipping the USB-C plug.

ASUS recommends testing the USB device on another computer and bypassing a USB-C docking hub; it also identifies insufficient power to a dock as a possible cause of connection trouble. See ASUS USB Type-C troubleshooting for Windows 10 and 11.
Recommended Free Tools
- Works directly, but not through the dock: Check the dock’s connection and power supply. A powered USB-C hub may be relevant if the SSD works directly but the current hub does not.
- Fails on the handheld and another computer: Try a known-good data cable. If it remains undetected across hosts, the SSD or its enclosure may have a device-side fault; ASUS advises contacting the USB device’s manufacturer in this situation.
2. On ROG Ally, check Disk Management before changing the drive
Windows may detect a disk without displaying it in File Explorer. On the Ally, open Computer Management as an administrator, select Disk Management, and locate the external drive. Read its status before taking action. ASUS’s Windows SSD troubleshooting guide, updated May 4, 2026, covers Windows 10 and 11 and lists gaming handhelds among the applicable PC types.
#1 Best Overall
- Get NVMe solid state performance with up to 1050MB/s read and 1000MB/s write speeds in a portable, high-capacity drive(1) (Based on internal testing; performance may be lower depending on host device & other factors. 1MB=1,000,000 bytes.)
- Up to 3-meter drop protection and IP65 water and dust resistance mean this tough drive can take a beating(3) (Previously rated for 2-meter drop protection and IP55 rating. Now qualified for the higher, stated specs.)
- Use the handy carabiner loop to secure it to your belt loop or backpack for extra peace of mind.
- Help keep private content private with the included password protection featuring 256‐bit AES hardware encryption.(3)
- Easily manage files and automatically free up space with the SanDisk Memory Zone app.(5). Non-Operating Temperature -20°C to 85°C
If the disk is Offline
Right-click the disk and choose the option to bring it Online, as described by ASUS. Then check whether it appears in File Explorer.
If the disk is Online but has no drive letter
Right-click the relevant partition, choose Change Drive Letter and Paths, and add a drive letter. This can make an existing, accessible volume appear in File Explorer.

- Capacity Display Variance: 500GB external ssd often appears as around 465GB on Windows. MacOS can show full 500 GB capacity. This is binary calculation difference and doesn’t affect SSD hard drive actual physical storage
- 1050 MB/s Speed: Instantly access to your files with blazing-fast 10Gbps external SSD read up to 1050MB/s and write up to 1000MB/s. LED Light indicates USB SSD instant activity
- Data Security: Solid state drives S.M.A.R.T. health diagnostics and adaptive TRIM optimizing data block management ensures consistent write speeds and extends the longevity of the portable SSD
- USB-C & USB-A Cable: Both cables featuring rapid USB 3.2 Gen2, this USB SSD effortlessly bridges devices, enabling seamless cross-platform file transfers and backup between computers, smartphones, tablets and iPhone
- Always Fast: No slowdowns for large file transfers. With SLC caching (25% of current available capacity allocated as high-speed cache), this external SSD delivers steady 10Gbps for transfers within the cache capacity
If the disk shows as Unallocated
Stop if it may contain files you need. Do not create a new volume or format it just to make it appear: partition changes and formatting can make existing data inaccessible. ASUS describes creating a New Simple Volume only when the space is known to be empty. Back up data first when possible.

Disk Management cannot fix a device Windows has not enumerated. Return to the direct-connection and cable checks, test the SSD on another host, and continue to Device Manager. If it stays absent on multiple hosts, contact the SSD or enclosure maker.

3. Check Device Manager and Windows updates on ROG Ally
- Open Device Manager and expand Disk drives.
- If the external device is disabled, enable it. ASUS also describes uninstalling the device entry and restarting Windows so it can reinstall the driver.
- After restarting, check for driver updates and install available Windows updates. ASUS also recommends keeping the BIOS and drivers current; follow its instructions for your Ally model when applying updates.
- If your device supports it, ASUS says MyASUS may offer solid-state-drive diagnostics. Not every product shows this diagnostic page, so its absence does not by itself indicate a fault.
These checks apply when Windows recognizes the USB device or exposes a related entry. If the drive never appears in Disk Management or Device Manager, prioritize the cable, port, hub, another-host test, and device support.
4. Steam Deck: don’t assume an external SSD needs ext4
Valve’s Steam Deck FAQ says the Deck formats microSD cards as “ext4 with casefolding.” That statement is about microSD cards; it does not establish that an external USB SSD must use ext4 or provide a procedure for mounting or formatting one.

Valve describes docking the Deck as similar to plugging a USB-C hub into a PC. A dock connection alone does not show whether an SSD is mounted or formatted correctly. For a drive containing data, preserve its contents and avoid reformatting as a first step. Use a Deck-specific official procedure or qualified support before changing its filesystem.
5. When to escalate
If the SSD works on another computer but not through a dock, focus on the hub, dock, cable, or its power. If it is absent on multiple hosts with a known-good data cable, contact the SSD or enclosure manufacturer. For a ROG Ally, ASUS support is also appropriate after direct-connection, Disk Management, and Device Manager checks.

ASUS documents two ways to enter the Ally’s BIOS: hold the volume-down button while powering on, or use Windows Settings > Recovery > Advanced Startup > Restart now > Troubleshoot > Advanced Options > UEFI Firmware Settings. This is an access method, not evidence that a normal external data SSD should appear in BIOS; the Ally FAQ does not say that it must.
