To compare Ethereum exchange flows across analytics platforms, match the asset, exchange group, metric definition, interval, units, time window and retrieval time—and record whether each provider revises historical data. Inflow, outflow and netflow describe transfers involving wallets a provider labels as exchanges; they do not establish why a transfer happened or predict a trade.
What exchange-flow metrics count
Exchange-flow metrics classify ETH movements by the provider’s labels for exchange wallets. CryptoQuant defines inflow as ETH deposited into those wallets and outflow as ETH withdrawn from them. Netflow is inflow minus outflow: positive netflow means more ETH flowed into the labeled wallets than out, while negative netflow means more flowed out. CryptoQuant’s ETH API documentation describes inflow, outflow and reserve endpoints, as well as the groups “All Exchanges,” “Spot Exchanges” and “Derivative Exchanges.”

Check the metric’s exact name and unit before comparing values. A transfer volume is not a transaction count; a total is not a mean; a reserve is not a flow. Likewise, ETH-denominated values cannot be compared directly with USD-denominated values.

Exchange-wallet labels are estimates, not a universal address list
Providers maintain their own labeled address datasets. CryptoQuant says its exchange-address heuristic evolves and its ETH flow history can change when newly identified exchange wallets are validated. Its documentation also describes a weekly wallet update at Tuesday 00:00 UTC. CryptoQuant’s exchange-flow guidance explains that the metrics depend on proprietary address labeling.

Glassnode also says its exchange metrics rely on labeled addresses, data-science techniques and statistical information that can change over time. It warns that values—especially recent observations—may fluctuate. See Glassnode’s exchange metrics documentation.
Groups and aggregation rules may not match
“All exchanges,” “spot,” “derivative” and a named exchange are not interchangeable groups. Even when two charts use the same label, the sources do not establish that their address coverage, exclusions or grouping rules are identical. A provider that does not offer an equivalent group cannot support a like-for-like comparison; mark that comparison as non-equivalent rather than treating the totals as directly comparable.

Historical values may be revised
CryptoQuant says its flow endpoint is not point-in-time accurate: values in historical data may change as its wallet labels are updated. Glassnode documents separate point-in-time variants whose history is append-only and immutable. When comparing or preserving observations, note whether you used a revised series or a point-in-time series; the option and behavior depend on the provider and endpoint. Glassnode’s point-in-time metrics documentation describes the append-only variants.

- Select ETH and identify the metric. Record each platform’s exact metric name and definition. Confirm whether it is inflow, outflow, netflow, reserve, transaction count, total volume or mean volume.
- Match the exchange group. Choose the closest equivalent available on each platform, such as all exchanges, spot, derivative or a named exchange. Label the comparison non-equivalent if one side has no matching group.
- Align interval, unit and aggregation. Use the same time interval and time window, and distinguish total from mean. Confirm both values are in ETH or convert only when you have a defensible, consistent conversion method.
- Align timestamps and capture retrieval time. Check the chart’s timestamp convention and save the date and time you retrieved the data. This matters because a provider may revise labeled histories after the original observation.
- Preserve the observations and their context. Save the raw values or export with the platform, chart or endpoint, asset, exchange group, metric, interval, unit and retrieval timestamp. If point-in-time data is available and appropriate, record that choice too.
- Explain differences before interpreting them. Treat disagreement as potentially arising from address labels, supported exchanges, group definitions, aggregation rules or later data revisions. Consult each provider’s current entity lists and methodology; the documented sources do not establish a normalized, identical cross-vendor address inventory.
Interpret transfers cautiously
A flow chart shows movements between wallets classified as exchange wallets and other wallets. It cannot, by itself, establish that a holder intends to sell or buy. Transfers may reflect custody changes, exchange-to-exchange movement, operational wallet management, collateral movement or other activity. CryptoQuant specifically notes that some large inflows can result from transfers between exchanges and arbitrage strategies. Its interpretation guidance presents flow metrics as possible indicators, not certainty about the reason for an individual transfer.

For a useful cross-platform comparison, keep the metric definition and data vintage alongside every value. A matching chart title is not enough to make two series equivalent.
