How to Format an External SSD for Steam Deck and ROG Ally Games

Valve’s Steam Deck and ASUS’s ROG Ally storage instructions differ—and neither establishes a guaranteed shared external-SSD Steam library format.

Choose the handheld that will use the drive most often before formatting. Valve documents an ext4 format for Steam Deck microSD cards, while ASUS recommends NTFS in its ROG Ally guide for additional storage. Those instructions do not establish a single external-SSD format that works as an interchangeable Steam game library on both SteamOS and Windows. Back up the drive before formatting: formatting erases data.

Choose the format for the device that will use the SSD

The safest setup is to format and configure storage for its primary handheld and game launcher. If you plan to carry one SSD between a Steam Deck and a ROG Ally, do not assume that selecting a familiar file system makes the same Steam library work seamlessly on both.

Valve’s official guidance specifies ext4 with casefolding for Steam Deck microSD cards. ASUS’s ROG Ally guide recommends NTFS for additional storage in its SD-card instructions. These are device-specific recommendations, not a documented cross-platform external-SSD recipe. The cited sources do not confirm exFAT, NTFS, or ext4 as a guaranteed shared Steam-library format.

ROG Ally additional storage ASUS’s SD-card guide recommends NTFS and explains adding a game location in Steam or selecting an install location in another launcher. Source: ASUS ROG guide. The guide addresses SD cards; it does not provide a complete external-SSD setup for both handhelds.
One SSD shared between Steam Deck and ROG Ally The cited official sources provide separate device-specific storage guidance. They do not establish a straightforward interchangeable Steam library format, mount setup, permissions, or library behavior.

Before formatting: protect the files on the drive

Formatting erases data on the selected volume, as ASUS warns in its guide. Copy anything you need elsewhere and check carefully that you have selected the intended drive before confirming. A portable USB-C SSD is the relevant kind of external storage for this setup; neither cited source specifies a recommended model, capacity, or speed.

Steam Deck: distinguish microSD instructions from SSD setup

Valve’s documented in-menu format path is for a microSD card, not a USB external SSD. For a Steam Deck microSD card, insert it and use Steam > Settings > System > Format SD card. Valve states that the Deck formats SD cards to the proper ext4-with-casefolding format. See Valve’s Steam Deck FAQ.

To view or manage connected storage, Steam Support gives the path Steam > Settings > Storage. That is storage-management guidance; it does not say that this menu formats an external SSD or that a newly connected SSD automatically becomes a game library. See Valve’s Steam Deck – Basic Use & Troubleshooting Guide.

ROG Ally: follow the documented storage and launcher workflow

ASUS’s guide is specifically about installing games to an SD card on the ROG Ally or ROG Xbox Ally. It recommends formatting the additional volume as NTFS, cautions that formatting erases its data, and then describes choosing a game location in a launcher. Treat this as ASUS’s SD-card guidance rather than a complete external-SSD tutorial. Read the ASUS ROG guide.

  1. Back up the files on the card or drive before formatting.
  2. In the Windows format workflow described by ASUS, format the additional volume as NTFS.
  3. In Steam, add or choose a Steam Library Folder for game installation. In another launcher, select the additional storage as the install location where that launcher allows it.

ASUS also confirms that the ROG Ally series has a UHS-II microSD card reader, backward-compatible with microSD cards, and supports installing games to that storage. This concerns the built-in card reader, not a USB SSD. See the ROG Ally Series FAQ.

If you want to move one SSD between both handhelds

The available official instructions stop short of specifying a shared-drive configuration. Whether an external SSD can be used for a particular library depends on the format, how each operating system mounts the drive, permissions, and the launcher’s library behavior. Verify those details for your exact SteamOS and Windows setup before moving or installing a game library; do not rely on the microSD instructions as proof that an external drive will behave identically.
