Ethereum exchange netflow is the ETH attributed to exchange wallets flowing in minus the ETH flowing out during a chosen period. Positive netflow means attributed inflows exceeded outflows; negative netflow means outflows exceeded inflows. But the chart is only as stable as the provider’s exchange-wallet labels: when addresses are added or reclassified, earlier values can change too. Read the formula, cohort and chart settings before treating a bar—or a revised historical bar—as a market signal.
What Ethereum exchange netflow measures
Netflow is a difference, not a separate kind of transaction: inflow − outflow. CryptoQuant uses that definition for its exchange netflow metric (CryptoQuant’s explanation of exchange inflow, outflow and netflow). A positive value means the provider counted more ETH moving into its exchange cohort than leaving it in that interval; a negative value means the reverse.

The calculation relies on an address set that the provider identifies as exchange-controlled. It therefore describes transfers involving labeled exchange addresses, not a complete ledger of exchange holdings, trades or customer decisions. CryptoQuant says its exchange-flow classifications use evolving address heuristics and warns that large apparent outflows may be internal wallet moves (CryptoQuant’s exchange-flow indicators).

Providers discover, validate and group wallet addresses over time. If a newly identified address is added to an exchange cluster, or an existing address is reclassified, historical transfers involving it may be counted differently. A chart viewed today can therefore be a provider’s current reconstruction of the past, not necessarily the exact series visible when an older screenshot was captured.

CryptoQuant says its ETH flow endpoint does not provide point-in-time accuracy because periodic wallet-cluster updates can change historical data (CryptoQuant ETH exchange-flow documentation). Glassnode likewise notes that exchange metrics are mutable as labels and statistical methods are updated (Glassnode transaction metrics). When an old bar differs from a current one, check the provider and retrieval date, metric definition, exchange cohort and settings before interpreting the difference as a new market event.
How to read a netflow chart
- Confirm the sign convention. Check the chart’s definition rather than inferring it from colors or bar direction. Some displays plot inflow and outflow as separate series, while a netflow series combines them; outflows may be shown as positive totals or inverted. CryptoQuant defines netflow as inflow minus outflow (CryptoQuant’s definition).
- Identify the exchange cohort. Determine whether the chart covers one named venue, all exchanges, spot exchanges or derivatives exchanges. “All exchanges” is not interchangeable with a specific exchange or a spot-only cohort. The provider’s coverage and address labels determine what is included (CryptoQuant’s ETH exchange-flow documentation).
- Check the unit. ETH-denominated flow expresses token quantity. USD-denominated flow also changes with ETH’s market price, even if the number of tokens transferred is unchanged. Glassnode’s referenced ETH deposit-and-withdrawal chart uses ETH units (Glassnode’s ETH exchange deposit and withdrawal chart notes).
- Check the time interval and smoothing. Daily totals and intraday buckets are not directly comparable. A moving average smooths short-lived spikes and can lag abrupt moves. Glassnode’s cited chart shows inflow and outflow in ETH alongside a seven-day exponential moving average of netflow (Glassnode chart methodology).
- Investigate a large move before assigning meaning. A transfer out of one labeled exchange address may be a transfer to another wallet controlled by the same exchange. A block explorer can show the transaction, but by itself does not establish common ownership of the two addresses. CryptoQuant explicitly cautions that apparent exchange outflows can reflect internal wallet changes (CryptoQuant’s exchange-flow indicators).
What positive or negative netflow can—and cannot—suggest
For a spot-exchange cohort, sustained positive netflow means more ETH entered the provider’s labeled addresses than left them. It may be described as a possible increase in ETH available on labeled venues, and some market commentary treats that as potential sell-side supply. It does not prove that anyone sold, intends to sell or will move the price. Sustained negative netflow means more ETH left than entered the labeled cohort; it does not, on its own, prove accumulation or predict a rally.

For derivatives exchanges, deposits can be collateral for either long or short positions. A rise in derivatives-exchange flow is therefore not a simple bullish or bearish signal; it may reflect collateral changes and possible volatility rather than spot-market direction. CryptoQuant distinguishes derivatives-flow interpretation from spot exchange supply (CryptoQuant Ethereum exchange netflow (total)).

How to compare charts or providers
Two providers’ numbers should not be expected to match unless their definitions and settings align. Before comparing series, record the details that can change what is being counted:

- Address labels and coverage: provider, named venue or aggregate, and how newly discovered wallets are handled.
- Exchange type: spot, derivatives or all exchanges.
- Formula and sign: whether netflow is inflow minus outflow and how the chart visualizes outflows.
- Unit and time basis: ETH or USD, aggregation interval and timezone where documented.
- Smoothing and revision timing: raw series or moving average, plus the date the chart was retrieved and any available label-update note.
For an archived screenshot or quoted value, preserve the provider name, retrieval date and chart settings with it. Without those details, a later reader cannot tell whether a changed value reflects revised labels, a different cohort, a different interval or another chart option.
