In Windows 11, open Settings > System > Display to change how a screen looks or how connected monitors work. Select the display you want to adjust first; the controls shown depend on the PC, display, and connection.
How do I change my screen resolution and layout in Windows?
Windows 11 puts resolution, scaling, and orientation controls in Settings > System > Display. If you use more than one screen, select the correct display at the top of the page before changing its settings.

Adjust scale, resolution, or orientation
- Open Settings > System > Display and select the screen to change.
- Under Scale & layout, choose a scale option. The option marked Recommended is a sensible starting point: a larger scale makes text and interface elements easier to see, while a smaller scale leaves more room for content.
- Open Display resolution and choose an available resolution. Windows generally recommends the display’s appropriate setting. A resolution below the screen’s native resolution can make text less sharp or make the picture appear small, centered, bordered by black, or stretched.
- Choose the desired setting under Display orientation if you need landscape or portrait. Follow any confirmation prompt to keep the change.
Available choices depend on the screen and graphics hardware. If a resolution or refresh rate you expect is missing, check that the display supports it and that the PC is connected using a compatible port and cable.

How do I change brightness, Night light, and color?
Brightness
On a built-in display that supports it, adjust brightness in taskbar quick settings or at Settings > System > Display. Many external monitors do not provide a Windows brightness slider; use the monitor’s physical buttons or on-screen menu instead.

Night light

How do I turn on HDR or change the refresh rate?
HDR and refresh-rate controls appear only when the PC, graphics hardware, display, and connection support them. In Settings > System > Display, select the HDR-capable screen before enabling HDR or changing its available settings.
HDR setup and troubleshooting
- Confirm that both the PC and the selected display support HDR. Windows cannot add HDR capability to a screen that lacks it.
- For HDR over DisplayPort, Microsoft recommends using DisplayPort instead of HDMI when the display supports HDR through DisplayPort. The connection must support the required mode at both ends.
- On an HDR display, Windows provides a brightness balance for SDR content shown on that screen. The result can vary by display model.
- If HDR is unavailable or does not work as expected, check the graphics driver and verify that the display and connection support the feature.
Refresh-rate options and video playback
The refresh rates listed in Display settings depend on the connected display setup. If video on a multi-monitor system stalls or repeatedly starts and stops, Microsoft suggests testing with the monitors set to the same refresh rate.

What if a display setting is missing or looks wrong?
- Check which display is selected. With multiple monitors, settings apply to the selected screen.
- Use the recommended resolution and scale as a baseline. A lower-than-native resolution can reduce sharpness or produce an incorrectly sized image.
- Check hardware and connection support. Brightness, HDR, and refresh-rate controls depend on the display, PC, and sometimes the cable or port.
- Update or check the display driver. A driver issue can affect options such as Night light or HDR.
- Use monitor controls where Windows has no control. External-monitor brightness, in particular, may need to be adjusted with the monitor’s buttons.
These instructions lead with Windows 11. Microsoft’s cited support pages also cover Windows 10, but Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. Labels and available settings can vary by Windows build and hardware.
