What Does Tonnes of Steam per Day Mean for an Industrial Project?

Tonnes of steam per day is a mass-flow measure: the total mass of steam generated, delivered, purchased or exported over 24 hours. It is not a power rating by itself. Divide metric tonnes per day by 24 to get the average tonnes per hour; for example, 240 tonnes per day equals 10 tonnes per hour, or 10,000 kilograms per hour. To size equipment or estimate megawatts, you must also define the measurement boundary and provide steam pressure, temperature or quality, feedwater conditions, operating hours and peak demand.

What the unit actually measures

A quantity of mass over time

A tonne of steam is 1,000 kilograms of water in vapor form. Adding “per day” turns that mass into a flow rate averaged over a 24-hour period. A project reported at 240 tonnes per day has an average flow of 10 tonnes per hour if it operates continuously for 24 hours.

DOE guidance notes that large steam-generating systems commonly track production by hour or by day. The daily figure is useful for production planning, fuel accounting and reporting, but it does not show whether the boiler runs steadily, cycles, or reaches a much higher rate during production shifts.

Steam is water vapor, not an energy unit

The EIA defines steam as water in vapor form and describes boilers as furnaces that produce steam for process heat or for turbines. The mass of steam does not tell you how much useful heat it carries. A kilogram of steam at one pressure and temperature can contain a different amount of usable energy from a kilogram at another condition.

Define the project boundary

Before comparing a number with a boiler quotation, process requirement or neighboring facility, identify what the number includes:

  • Boiler gross output: steam leaving the boiler, before distribution losses or plant use.
  • Process delivery: steam measured at the users or at a defined plant header.
  • Purchased steam: steam received from an outside supplier at the custody-transfer meter.
  • Net export: steam sent to another site after the generating plant’s own consumption.

These quantities can differ substantially. A statement such as “100 tonnes per day” is incomplete until the meter location and accounting basis are stated.

How to convert tonnes per day to other flow units

For metric tonnes, use mass-flow conversions only:

  • tonnes/hour = tonnes/day ÷ 24
  • kilograms/hour = tonnes/day × 1,000 ÷ 24
  • kilograms/second = tonnes/day × 1,000 ÷ 86,400
Reported rate Average hourly rate Average mass rate Average rate in kilograms per second
240 tonnes per day 10 tonnes per hour 10,000 kilograms per hour 2.78 kilograms per second

The hourly and second-by-second figures in the table are averages. If the plant operates only 16 hours per day, a nameplate allowance of 240 tonnes per day would require an operating-period average of 15 tonnes per hour during those 16 hours, before any startup or peak margin is added. Always state the operating schedule used for the conversion.

Can tonnes per day be converted directly to megawatts?

Why there is no universal conversion factor

No single megawatt value applies to every tonne-per-day figure. UNFCCC guidance requires steam-energy calculations to account for pressure and temperature and to obtain specific enthalpy from steam tables. Steam quality, such as the moisture content of wet steam, also affects the enthalpy. The feedwater enthalpy matters because the boiler adds only the difference between the outlet-steam energy and the inlet-water energy.

UNIDO describes boiler capacity as the maximum power the boiler can supply to the industrial production process. It explains that a capacity stated in kilograms per hour is converted to power using the enthalpy change between outlet steam and inlet water. That is a thermodynamic conversion, not a fixed tonnes-per-day multiplier.

The calculation method

Once the operating conditions are known, calculate the useful thermal rate with:

thermal power (W) = steam mass flow (kg/s) × [steam enthalpy − feedwater enthalpy] (J/kg)

  1. Convert the reported daily mass to kilograms per second.
  2. Identify the pressure, temperature and steam quality at the measurement point.
  3. Use accepted steam tables to obtain the specific enthalpy of the steam.
  4. Measure or specify feedwater temperature and pressure, then obtain feedwater enthalpy.
  5. Subtract feedwater enthalpy from steam enthalpy.
  6. Multiply the enthalpy change by the mass flow and divide by 1,000,000 to express the result in megawatts of thermal power.

If the figure is boiler fuel input, turbine output or exported electricity rather than process-steam heat, a further efficiency calculation is required. A steam-flow rate alone cannot establish electrical megawatts.

Is tonnes per day the boiler size or the process demand?

Boiler capacity

A boiler capacity is a maximum capability under specified conditions. UNIDO’s definition emphasizes the maximum power supplied to the industrial process; manufacturers may express the corresponding steam capacity in kilograms per hour. A daily value derived from that rating is not necessarily the amount the plant will consume.

Process demand

Process demand is the steam that users require. It varies with product mix, ambient conditions, batch timing, shift patterns and equipment status. A plant can have a boiler rated above its average demand so it can cover peaks, startup and future expansion, or it can use multiple smaller boilers to stage output.

Generated, delivered and exported figures

Term What is counted Question to ask
Generated Steam leaving the boiler or generator Does the meter include blowdown and plant-service steam?
Delivered Steam arriving at the process header or user Are distribution losses and pressure-reduction stations upstream of the meter?
Purchased Steam crossing a supplier’s custody-transfer point What pressure, quality and billing conditions apply at that point?
Net export Steam available to another site after the generator’s own use What internal consumers are deducted?

What a project specification should include

A single daily average is not enough to select boilers, headers, turbines, heat exchangers or utility contracts. Include these items in the basis of design:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Average and maximum demand: state normal, minimum, maximum and short-duration peak rates.
  2. Operating hours and load profile: identify shifts, batch cycles, weekends, planned shutdowns and startup ramps.
  3. Steam conditions: specify pressure, temperature, saturation or superheat, and allowable quality at the measurement point.
  4. Measurement boundary: label the number as gross generation, process delivery, purchased steam or net export.
  5. Condensate return: give the expected percentage returned, its temperature and contamination controls.
  6. Blowdown: state continuous or intermittent blowdown assumptions and how it is metered.
  7. Fuel and efficiency: identify fuel type, rated heat input, boiler efficiency basis and part-load performance.
  8. Emissions and redundancy: define limits, backup fuel, reserve capacity, maintenance strategy and the number of independent units.

Australia’s process-heat guidance recommends detailed metering and monitoring, control optimization and avoiding oversized combined heat-and-power capacity. Those practices help distinguish a real process requirement from a conservative or poorly measured estimate.

How daily steam demand affects equipment sizing

Use the peak, not only the average

A 24-hour average can hide a two-hour production surge. If the boiler is selected from the average alone, header pressure may fall when several users start together. Conversely, selecting for an improbable simultaneous maximum can leave equipment lightly loaded, reducing efficiency and increasing capital cost. Model the load in time intervals that match the process, then test startup, shutdown and upset cases separately.

Allow for staged operation

Multiple boilers can provide turndown and maintenance flexibility. A lead unit can carry base load while additional units start for peaks. The required arrangement depends on the demand profile, minimum stable firing rate, redundancy policy and the consequence of losing one unit; these cannot be inferred from tonnes per day alone.

Separate steam capacity from fuel capacity

Boiler steam output is a mass rate. Fuel systems are sized by heat input, which depends on the required enthalpy rise and boiler efficiency. UNIDO defines boiler efficiency as heat absorbed by feedwater divided by fuel-input energy. The same steam rate can therefore require different fuel flows when feedwater temperature, pressure, efficiency or fuel changes.

How much water does one tonne of steam require?

Steam output is not automatically equal to fresh-water makeup. DOE’s method estimates daily makeup by adding boiler blowdown to steam leaving the boiler and subtracting returned condensate:

fresh-water makeup = boiler steam leaving + blowdown − returned condensate

If condensate is returned clean and hot, the makeup-water volume and the energy needed to heat it can be much lower than if condensate is lost. The project should report condensate return as a percentage of generated steam and state whether the percentage is an annual average, a normal operating value or a guaranteed minimum.

UNFCCC monitoring guidance distinguishes steam produced by the boiler from steam used by the industrial process and commonly uses hourly monitoring intervals. That distinction matters when calculating water, fuel and emissions: steam generated for warm-up, tracing, deaeration or other utility services may not appear in the process-demand figure.

Fuel, emissions and cost implications

Fuel and emissions

To estimate fuel use, combine the required steam enthalpy rise with boiler efficiency and the fuel’s heating value. Include startup fuel, standby losses, blowdown heat loss and part-load operation when the estimate is intended for annual budgeting. Emissions depend on fuel composition, combustion controls, operating hours and whether the calculation is based on fuel input or useful process heat.

Cost per tonne is conditional

UNIDO gives an illustrative case in which generating 20 tonnes per hour from a natural-gas boiler costs $1,693 per hour, with a marginal fuel-related steam-cost indicator of $84.60 per tonne generated. Those figures describe that specific example and should not be treated as a universal price: fuel tariff, efficiency, pressure, feedwater, labor, maintenance, carbon costs and utilization all change the result.

For a project comparison, separate fixed costs from marginal costs and state whether the denominator is tonnes generated, tonnes delivered or tonnes exported. A plant with high condensate return and efficient base-load operation may have a lower delivered-steam cost than a plant with the same nameplate tonnes per day but poor return and frequent cycling.

Measurement and reporting checklist

Before accepting a tonnes-per-day number, verify:

  • The unit is metric tonnes, not short tons or another mass unit.
  • The averaging period is exactly 24 hours and the operating hours are recorded.
  • The meter location and whether it measures wet, saturated or superheated steam are documented.
  • Pressure, temperature and quality are measured or specified at the same point as the mass flow.
  • Calibration, compensation and data intervals are defined; hourly data is often needed to expose peaks.
  • Boiler blowdown, auxiliary steam and returned condensate are included or excluded consistently.
  • The value is labeled as average, maximum, guaranteed, design, permitted or historical.
  • Gross output and net process delivery are not mixed in the same comparison.

Common mistakes and how to correct them

Treating tonnes per day as megawatts

Problem: a project converts mass directly to power with a generic factor. Correction: obtain steam and feedwater enthalpies from pressure, temperature and quality, then apply the thermal-power equation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Using the daily average to size a header

Problem: simultaneous starts or batch peaks cause low pressure even though the daily total looks adequate. Correction: use an interval load profile and specify maximum demand, ramp rate and allowable pressure drop.

Equating steam output with makeup water

Problem: the water-treatment plant is sized for all generated steam even when condensate is recovered, or it is undersized because blowdown is ignored. Correction: apply the makeup formula and document condensate-return and blowdown assumptions.

Comparing unlike boundaries

Problem: one supplier quotes boiler gross output while another quotes net steam at the process. Correction: restate both offers at the same meter location and operating condition, including distribution losses and internal consumption.

A practical decision sequence

  1. Write the required steam service in plain language: process users, pressure levels, quality and operating schedule.
  2. Collect hourly or shorter-interval demand data where available; identify normal, peak, startup and shutdown cases.
  3. Convert any daily totals to hourly and second-based mass flow using the metric formulas.
  4. Set the measurement boundary and reconcile generated steam, delivered steam, condensate return and blowdown.
  5. Calculate thermal power from enthalpy differences rather than applying a universal tonnes-to-megawatts factor.
  6. Size boilers, fuel systems, water treatment, headers and redundancy against the load profile and efficiency assumptions.
  7. Present costs and emissions per clearly defined tonne, with fuel price, utilization and operating conditions stated.

Used this way, tonnes per day is a useful production and utility-accounting measure. It becomes a sound design basis only when the project adds the time profile, thermodynamic conditions and boundary that give the number engineering meaning.
