The “R” beside your Android phone’s cellular signal usually means it is roaming: your phone is connected to a cellular network other than its home network. The icon tells you about the connection, not whether you will be charged or whether mobile data roaming is turned on.
What the R means
Motorola labels the status-bar indicator “Connected to different cellular/mobile network (roaming)” in its status bar icons support documentation. Android’s Open Source Project also identifies stat_sys_roaming as the roaming-mode icon in its system icon documentation.

Roaming can happen when you travel, but the R does not prove that you have crossed an international border. A provider may use partner networks, and the relationship between a network and your home service depends on your carrier and plan. For example, SaskTel documents its own “SaskTel R” indicator for use of the Rogers network in Canada; that is a SaskTel-specific label, not a universal meaning of the letter R as a carrier brand. The symbol’s appearance and placement can vary by phone software and carrier configuration. If it is unfamiliar, Motorola recommends pulling down the status bar to see more details.

Does the R mean you will be charged?
No—not by itself. The R shows roaming status; it does not show a fee or establish a universal roaming rate. Charges depend on the carrier’s terms for your plan, destination and service used. Check your carrier’s current terms before using roaming or assuming it is free.
Roaming status is different from the data-roaming setting
Your phone can display that it is roaming independently of whether mobile data roaming is enabled. Android’s TelephonyManager API documentation describes a separate setting for whether mobile data roaming is enabled for a subscription. To review it, look in your phone’s SIM or mobile-network settings; the exact menu path varies by model and software version. The setting does not establish what your carrier will bill.

What to check if you see an R
- Pull down the status bar and inspect the network or notification details if you do not recognize the icon.
- If you are traveling or did not expect to be roaming, check which SIM is active and review the mobile-network settings, including data roaming.
- Before using mobile data, check your carrier’s current roaming terms for your specific plan and destination.
