What’s actually slowing this PC down?

“Plug and hope” is a sarcastic computing expression for connecting or configuring a device while unsure whether it will work. It pokes fun at the gap between a promised easy setup and the trial and error a user may actually face. Unlike Plug-and-Play, it is not a technical standard or protocol.
Where the phrase comes from
A March 2, 1995, account in EDN describes the phrase in the context of configuring PC peripherals. Dan Strassberg, then EDN’s senior technical editor, wrote that industry wags called the trial-and-error approach “plug and pray,” while Intel marketers used “plug and hope.” The article places the practice in the early PC era; it does not establish who first coined either phrase.

Setup could mean restarting a computer repeatedly while changing jumper or DIP-switch settings on an I/O card, trying drivers, and adjusting configuration options. On ISA systems, users might have to find workable assignments for IRQs, DMA channels, memory-address space, and I/O-port addresses.
How it differs from Plug-and-Play
| Term | What it describes | What the user experiences |
|---|---|---|
| Plug-and-Play | A design goal: compatible hardware is intended to be recognized and configured with less manual work, including operating-system allocation of resources. | Setup should require less intervention, though automation is not a guarantee of error-free installation. |
| Plug and hope | A wry description of uncertainty during device installation or configuration. | The user tries a connection or setting and hopes the device works as intended. |
A Digital Glossary likewise associates “Plug and Hope” with frustration installing PC peripherals and notes that Plug-and-Play is not entirely error-free. That caveat does not make the two expressions equivalent: one names an intended setup philosophy, while the other is a sarcastic comment on a frustrating experience.

How people use it today
Someone might say “this is plug and hope” when a device’s compatibility or setup is uncertain, even if the phrase is being used loosely rather than to describe the older ISA configuration process. It is best understood as informal commentary, not as the name of a particular feature, setting, or technology.
The phrase’s documented historical setting is PC peripheral configuration before operating-system Plug-and-Play resource allocation was broadly in place. It should not be read as a claim that modern peripherals generally require manual configuration, nor does the 1995 account establish a definitive first use.
