It is an approximate performance counterpart, not an identical GPU: results depend on the game, resolution, graphics settings, and the rest of the PC.
Which AMD GPU is closest to the PS5?
For a discrete desktop graphics card, the Radeon RX 6700 is the closest practical match identified by Digital Foundry’s February 2024 comparison of the card with the PS5. The analysis examined delivered performance across several games rather than relying only on theoretical compute figures. Digital Foundry’s RX 6700 versus PS5 analysis used a PC with an Intel Core i9-13900K and 32GB of DDR5 memory.

That comparison is useful as a point of reference, not a universal conversion. It applies to the games, settings, and test setup covered in the analysis; it does not establish that an RX 6700 will match the PS5 in every game.
What is inside the standard PS5?
Sony describes the standard PS5’s graphics processor as an AMD RDNA 2-based graphics engine with ray-tracing acceleration and a variable frequency of up to 2.23 GHz. Sony also lists 10.3 TFLOPS of graphics compute performance and 16GB of GDDR6 system memory with 448GB/s bandwidth. These are console specifications, not a direct desktop-card performance rating. Sony’s PS5 technical specifications
#1 Best Overall
- Chipset: AMD RX 7600
- Memory: 8GB GDDR6
- XFX SWFT Dual Fan Cooling Solution
- Boost Clock: Up to 2655 MHz
The console’s memory is shared system memory. It should not be treated as equivalent to the dedicated video memory on a desktop graphics card, nor does the PS5’s stated TFLOPS figure provide a reliable formula for choosing a PC GPU.
Why the RX 6700 is not an exact PS5 equivalent
The PS5 uses a semi-custom system-on-chip developed for Sony, while Radeon desktop cards are separate products. Sharing AMD graphics technology or an RDNA-family designation does not make the underlying hardware identical. AMD’s Radeon desktop graphics product information
Console games can also be tuned for fixed hardware, while PC performance depends on the processor, memory, drivers, resolution, and graphics settings. As a result, the same nominal GPU capability can produce different results across platforms.
Sony says that “Hardware-based ray tracing acceleration is integrated into PS5’s graphics processing unit (GPU), and developers have many ways to tap into these capabilities.” Sony’s PlayStation FAQ The presence of ray-tracing hardware alone does not establish that ray tracing performs identically on a PS5 and an RX 6700, so compare ray-traced performance separately from conventional rasterized graphics.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to use the comparison when choosing a PC GPU
- Compare the games you play. Look for results in the specific titles that matter to you rather than assuming one card will match the console across a whole library.
- Match the test conditions. Compare the same resolution and similar image-quality settings, and check which PC processor and memory configuration were used.
- Consider memory in context. A PC card’s dedicated video memory is not directly interchangeable with the PS5’s shared 16GB of system memory.
- Check ray tracing and upscaling independently. These can affect image quality and performance, and should not be inferred from raster performance alone.
- Verify current price and stock. Value changes with retailer availability and pricing; AMD’s general buying guidance also points to gaming targets, video memory, performance per dollar, and gaming or upscaling technologies as factors to weigh. AMD’s gaming graphics guidance
AMD notes that its own performance results can vary, so its general purchasing guidance is not a direct PS5-versus-RX 6700 benchmark.
