AI coding tools can speed up some development tasks, but the evidence does not show that they reliably turn a yearlong project into a two-month one. Studies have found higher task throughput and faster completion in some settings—and slower work in another. Without verified records showing what changed between the two projects, the year-versus-two-month comparison is a personal before-and-after account, not proof that AI caused the difference.
Does AI actually make developers faster?
Sometimes, but there is no single speed-up figure that applies to every developer or project. Results depend on the task, the developer’s experience and familiarity with the codebase, the AI tools available at the time, and what a study measures. Completing more tasks, finishing one task sooner, and shipping an entire project earlier are different outcomes.

Three field experiments found higher task throughput
A June 2025 Microsoft Research summary of three randomized field experiments at Microsoft, Accenture, and an anonymous Fortune 100 company reported 26.08% more completed tasks among developers given an AI coding assistant, across 4,867 developers (standard error 10.3%). That is a combined estimate of task throughput during ordinary business operations—not evidence that whole projects took 26.08% less calendar time. A Google trial estimated less time on one complex task
A randomized trial involving 96 full-time Google software engineers estimated that AI reduced time spent on a complex, enterprise-grade task by about 21%. The study used Google’s internal AI tooling in summer 2024, and the authors noted a large confidence interval and cautioned that the result may not generalize to other tools or time periods. It measures time on that task, not a project’s end-to-end delivery schedule. Paradis et al., How much does AI impact development speed?

An experienced open-source group took longer with AI available
In a 2025 randomized study, 16 experienced open-source developers completed 246 tasks in mature repositories they had contributed to for years. With early-2025 AI tools available, task completion took 19% longer. Participants had expected AI to reduce their time; afterward, they estimated a 20% reduction. The authors note that experimental artifacts cannot be entirely ruled out. The finding applies to this group, these familiar repositories, and the tools and setting studied—not to every developer or project. A short coding exercise showed a much larger gain
A February 2023 Microsoft Research summary reported that developers with Copilot completed a JavaScript HTTP-server task 55.8% faster than the control group. This was a bounded exercise from an earlier tool period, not a measurement of modern project timelines. Microsoft Research: The Impact of AI on Developer Productivity

These results differ because their participants, tools, codebases, and tasks differ. A short, well-defined exercise is not equivalent to work in a mature repository or a project that includes planning, integrations, testing, deployment, and polish. The outcome also matters: more tasks completed does not directly tell you how much earlier a release shipped.
How much faster can you build a project with AI?
The cited studies do not establish a reliable project-wide multiplier. Their results cannot be applied to claim that AI reduces a yearlong project to two months. A project’s calendar duration includes more than code generation: requirements, decisions, integration, testing, deployment, maintenance, and time when nobody is actively working on it all affect the finish date.

AI may reduce time on particular tasks while adding review, debugging, or rework elsewhere. To judge whether it shortened a project, compare equivalent measures—such as calendar days from a defined start to a usable release, or active development hours—and account for what each project included. The studies above provide useful evidence about bounded tasks and developer throughput, but they did not compare the two projects in this headline.
What would make a year-versus-two-month comparison meaningful?
Before attributing the difference to AI, establish what the durations mean and what else changed. A personal account can be valuable without being a controlled experiment; it should distinguish observed timing from a causal conclusion.

- Define the clock: Record each project’s start and finish, and say whether the duration is calendar time, active coding hours, or time to a usable release.
- Compare scope: Note the features, integrations, testing, deployment, maintenance, and polish included in each project.
- Identify other differences: Requirements stability, project novelty, prior experience, frameworks, collaborators, available work time, and reused code can all affect duration.
- Describe AI use: Name the tools and model versions actually used, when they were used, and which tasks they assisted.
- Count the work around generated code: Include prompting, checking, debugging, testing, and rework—not only the time until code first appeared.
If those records show that the projects were comparable and AI was the main change, the case for a contribution is stronger, though one personal comparison still cannot isolate causation as a randomized experiment can. If scope or working conditions differed, describe the projects as a before-and-after experience and identify AI as one possible contributor alongside the documented differences.

Can AI coding tools slow experienced developers down?
Yes. The METR study is a concrete example: experienced developers working in repositories they knew well took longer on the assigned tasks when early-2025 AI tools were allowed. That result does not cancel out faster results in other studies; it shows why experience, codebase familiarity, task type, and tool period matter. A tool can be useful on one task and create extra work on another.

For an individual developer, the practical measure is whether AI reduces the total effort required to reach correct, tested, maintainable code. Time spent prompting, verifying suggestions, diagnosing errors, or revising unsuitable code belongs in that calculation.
Does faster code generation mean better code?
Not automatically. A November 2024 GitHub study, updated February 6, 2025, randomly assigned 202 developers with at least five years of experience to complete an API-endpoint task with Copilot or without an AI tool. GitHub reported that the Copilot group was 53.2% more likely to pass all 10 unit tests and produced 13.6% more lines of code per readability error in blind reviews. Reviewers also gave statistically significant higher ratings for readability (3.62%), reliability (2.94%), maintainability (2.47%), and conciseness (4.16%); the Copilot group was 5% more likely to receive approval.
Those results describe one task, its tests and rubric, and a small blind-review subset. They do not establish that AI always improves production code or that a larger project will require less review. GitHub: Does GitHub Copilot improve code quality?
