Yes, if you use the benefits you are paying for. For U.S. players, the $19.99 annual Individual plan can make sense for compatible online multiplayer, cloud saves for supported games, or its classic-game libraries. The $49.99 Expansion Pack is a separate decision: it is most compelling if you will use its extra retro catalogs, selected DLC, or—on Switch 2—GameCube Classics and selected upgrade packs. A Family plan can lower the per-person cost when multiple accounts in one household use it.

These are arithmetic estimates, not separately listed Nintendo prices; the savings depend on how many accounts actually use the plan. Nintendo’s U.S. membership overview and support pricing information list the current prices.

What comes with standard membership?
Standard Nintendo Switch Online includes online multiplayer for compatible games, Save Data Cloud for compatible saves, access to NES, Super NES, and Game Boy Classics, Nintendo Music, special offers, and other benefits. Nintendo describes the overall service as offering more than 150 favorites across its libraries; that total covers the service as a whole, not just the standard tier. The classic catalog is curated and can change.
These features are not universal across every game or region. Nintendo specifies compatibility for online play and cloud saves, and benefit availability may depend on country and plan. Check the relevant game’s requirements and Nintendo’s current service overview before subscribing for a particular feature.

- 6.2” LCD screen

- Detachable Joy-Con controllers

What does Expansion Pack add?
Expansion Pack includes standard membership benefits plus selected Game Boy Advance, Nintendo 64, Virtual Boy, and SEGA Genesis games. On Switch 2, it also adds selected Nintendo GameCube Classics. The plan includes selected DLC, such as Animal Crossing: New Horizons – Happy Home Paradise and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe – Booster Course Pass, as well as Switch 2 Edition upgrade packs for selected games. See Nintendo’s overview and Expansion Pack details for the current benefits.
Included DLC is access, not permanent ownership
You need the full base game separately. Access to included DLC depends on an active membership; if membership lapses, access to that included content pauses. Check the current catalog and the eligibility of the specific game before paying for Expansion Pack primarily to use its DLC.

- Model number HAC 001( 01)
GameChat is not an Expansion Pack-only benefit
On Switch 2, GameChat is available to members of either plan. Nintendo says its open-access period ended March 31, 2026, after which membership is required. GameCube Classics and selected Switch 2 Edition upgrade packs, by contrast, are Expansion Pack benefits.
Which plan makes sense for your use?
Choose standard Individual if you are one player
At $19.99 for 12 months in the U.S., standard Individual is the direct option if you mainly want compatible online play, supported cloud saves, or the NES, Super NES, and Game Boy collections. Check that the games you play support the feature you care about.
Rank #4
- This pre-owned product is not Apple certified, but has been professionally inspected, tested and cleaned by Amazon-qualified suppliers.
- 6.2” LCD screen.
- Three play modes: TV, tabletop, and handheld
- Local co-op, online, and local wireless multiplayer
- Detachable Joy-Con controllers
Consider standard Family for several accounts
The $34.99 annual Family plan covers up to eight Nintendo Accounts. It can cost less per person than separate Individual memberships when multiple people in your household will use it. Compare the price with the actual number of participating accounts rather than assuming all eight slots will be filled.
Pay extra for Expansion Pack only for benefits you expect to use
Expansion Pack costs $49.99 annually for one account or $79.99 for up to eight accounts. Its case is strongest if you will play its additional retro libraries or use eligible included DLC. For Switch 2 owners, selected GameCube games and upgrade packs may also matter. If none of those additions appeal, standard membership is the more relevant comparison.
Best Value
- One player can use a Joy-Con in each hand
- Two players can each take one
- Multiple Joy-Con can be employed by numerous people for a variety of gameplay options (additional Joy-Con sold separately)
- Slip a set of Joy-Con into a Joy-Con grip accessory, mirroring a more traditional controller. Or, select an optional Nintendo Switch Pro Controller.
How do the free trial and renewal work?
Nintendo advertises a seven-day trial of standard membership in the U.S. It automatically changes to a one-month auto-renewing membership at the then-current price unless you cancel before the trial ends. Nintendo says the trial is unavailable to accounts with an active Individual or Family membership, and it is not an Expansion Pack trial. Review the current terms and disable automatic renewal if you do not want the paid renewal. Details are on Nintendo’s service overview.
Can you buy a membership code instead?
Nintendo supports membership-code redemption and lists 12-month membership cards among its retail offers. Codes are region restricted, so make sure the code matches the account’s region before purchasing. Nintendo’s retail offers page and code support information provide details.
