That is a repricing—not an explanation: it may reflect fading demand, heavy selling, thin liquidity, or a mix of factors. A chart alone does not prove fraud, and a quoted price does not guarantee you can sell at that price.
What a sharp drop does—and does not—mean
The SEC’s Division of Corporation Finance says meme coins are typically driven by market demand and speculation, and can experience significant price volatility. Some may have little or no functionality beyond entertainment or other non-functional purposes. When interest or willingness to buy falls, the price can fall quickly too. That describes a risk, not the cause of any particular coin’s decline.

A falling quote does not tell you that every holder has sold, that a project has failed, or that the promoters committed fraud. It also does not establish a token’s legal status. In its Feb. 27, 2025 Staff Statement on Meme Coins, SEC staff said a determination depends on the facts of the specific coin and how it is offered and sold. The statement is staff’s view, not a Commission rule or binding legal guidance, and says it has no legal force or effect.

Why a meme coin might lose value
Demand or attention fades
When a coin’s price depends largely on speculative demand, waning attention or fewer willing buyers can put downward pressure on its price. That is a plausible explanation, but a price chart by itself cannot establish that it caused a specific decline.

Promoters or other holders sell
A sharp drop can follow heavy selling. The SEC’s May 29, 2024 investor alert describes a possible pump-and-dump pattern: promoters use social media and sometimes a presale to attract buyers, then sell before the hype ends, after which the price typically falls rapidly. This is a documented scam pattern—not proof that every crashing coin was manipulated or that any particular seller acted improperly.
Liquidity dries up
Liquidity is the ability to buy or sell without greatly moving the price. In a thin market, a displayed quote may not be available for a large sale; the market can disappear, or the token may no longer be tradable. The SEC discusses these risks in its March 23, 2023 investor alert on crypto-asset securities. That alert concerns crypto-asset securities and should not be read as saying every meme coin has that legal classification. Dubai’s VARA also warns of price collapses and liquidity shortages in its Feb. 13, 2025 consumer alert about meme coins; its regulatory statements apply within its jurisdiction.

There may be manipulation or misleading promotion
VARA warns that meme coins can be subject to market manipulation and that claims of unrealistic returns are a warning sign. This is a risk to consider, not a conclusion to draw about a coin without evidence.
Can you still sell it?
Possibly, if a market is still operating and there are buyers. But a screen price is not a guaranteed sale price: the amount you can actually receive depends on available buyers, liquidity, the venue, and the price when your trade executes. A nonzero quote does not prove that you can sell a useful amount, and a market may disappear or the token may cease to be tradable.
A loss shown on a chart is not necessarily a realized loss for every holder; a holder realizes proceeds when they sell. But that distinction does not guarantee recovery: the sale may execute far below the displayed quote, or there may be no usable market. Meme-coin buyers may lose all the money used to buy the coins, and a rebound is not assured.
How to assess a specific coin’s decline
Before calling a particular fall a rug pull, pump-and-dump, or project failure, separate what is verified from what is only suspected. Check:
Rank #4
- The exact token and blockchain contract, so the price and trading activity refer to the asset you mean.
- Whether trading is active and whether meaningful liquidity is available on the venue being discussed.
- Whether the reported price matches that market, and whether a trade of the relevant size could plausibly execute near it.
- Reliable evidence about supply concentration, large-holder transactions, promoter statements, and changes to the project.
- Which claims are documented facts and which remain allegations or possible explanations.
A chart move alone cannot establish misconduct. The SEC staff statement and investor alerts, along with VARA’s warning, describe risks and patterns; they do not determine what happened to an unnamed token.
If you have already lost money
Be wary of anyone promising to recover crypto for a fee or asking for an extra payment, tax, or private keys to unlock funds. The SEC’s May 29, 2024 crypto-scam alert warns that people who have already lost crypto may be targeted again by purported recovery helpers, including advance-fee fraudsters. Do not share your private keys.
Best Value
Official sources reviewed here provide qualitative warnings, not a reliable overall figure for how often meme coins collapse, how much holders typically lose, or how often prices recover. A general percentage would therefore be misleading.
