A Linux “distro” is a distribution: a complete, packaged system built around the Linux kernel. The shorthand describes the collection of software delivered together—not a different kind of kernel.
Why is it called a Linux distribution?
A distribution is software assembled and distributed to users as a whole. Ubuntu’s project glossary defines a software distribution as “a set of software components that is distributed as a whole to users,” and describes a Linux distribution as a complete operating system based on the Linux kernel, with essential system components, applications, and package-management tools. “Distro” is simply the informal shortening of “distribution.” People use “Linux distro” for the installable system they choose and run, rather than for the kernel alone.

The Linux kernel is a core component of a working system, not the entire system by itself. The kernel project explains that someone seeking a complete Linux system wants “a distribution of Linux.” Distributions combine the kernel with the surrounding software needed to make a usable system. Distributions can be general-purpose or optimized for particular uses, which is one reason there are many of them. The shared word “Linux” can refer narrowly to the kernel or, in everyday conversation, to a complete system built around it. The kernel project’s page, dated 2024-08-06, makes that component-versus-system distinction explicit. Linux kernel project: About Linux Kernel
Why do some people say “GNU/Linux”?
Many Linux-based systems include GNU software as well as the Linux kernel. The GNU Project uses “GNU/Linux” to recognize GNU’s contribution to those systems. This is a naming position you may encounter; “Linux” remains common shorthand for the complete system in everyday usage. GNU Project: Linux and GNU
Does “distribution” always mean the whole operating system?
Not necessarily: the meaning depends on context. In general, “Linux distribution” means a complete system assembled around the Linux kernel. Debian documentation also uses “Debian distribution” to refer to a Debian release or suite, such as stable, testing, or unstable. Debian Project wiki
Was “distro” coined by a particular person?
The cited project documentation establishes that “distro” is shorthand for “distribution,” but it does not identify who first shortened the word or when the shortening first appeared in Linux. There is no established first-use date to give here.
