1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesStrong Wi-Fi bars mean your device has a good wireless link to the router; they do not confirm that the router can reach the internet. The break may be on one device, between the router and modem, or with your internet provider. First check whether other devices on the same Wi-Fi can get online: that tells you which part of the connection to troubleshoot.
What strong Wi-Fi bars actually tell you
Your device can communicate with the router over Wi-Fi while the router has no working connection to the wider internet. Signal bars describe the local wireless link, not the router’s connection through the modem and internet service provider (ISP). Microsoft calls this “limited connectivity”; its explanation is that a Windows PC can be connected to the local network without being connected to the internet. Start by checking how many devices are affected
Try opening more than one website or app, then test another phone, computer, or tablet on the same Wi-Fi.
| What you find | Where to investigate |
|---|---|
| Other devices work; only one is offline | The affected device’s Wi-Fi connection, IP/DHCP, DNS, proxy, or other network settings. |
| No devices on that Wi-Fi can get online | The router, modem, router-to-modem connection, or ISP service. |
| Some websites or apps work, but one does not | The particular site or app, or a device firewall or related setting; this alone does not show that the whole internet connection is down. |
This split helps avoid changing every device’s settings when only one is affected, or troubleshooting a phone when the whole home connection is down. For a similar device-versus-network diagnostic, see TP-Link’s Wi-Fi connection guide.

If only one device cannot get online
Reconnect before changing settings
- Turn Wi-Fi off and back on, then reconnect to the network.
- If that does not help, forget the network and join it again with the correct password.
- Restart the device.
On phones and non-Windows computers, menu names vary. Use the device maker’s current instructions before resetting all network settings.
Check Windows IP, DNS, and proxy settings
On Windows 10 or 11, an address beginning with 169.254. can mean the PC did not receive an IP address from the router. On a typical home network configured for automatic addressing, check that DHCP is enabled. If the PC has an address but websites still do not load, check whether a DNS server is configured and reachable. DNS translates website names into network addresses, so a DNS problem can stop sites from loading even when Wi-Fi connects.

Also check that an unintended manual proxy is not enabled. Windows’ network commands are another option if simpler reconnection steps fail. Open Command Prompt and run ipconfig /release, then ipconfig /renew, then ipconfig /flushdns. Microsoft’s broader network reset sequence also includes netsh winsock reset and netsh int ip reset; some commands require administrative privileges. Follow Microsoft’s instructions for the relevant steps: Windows Wi-Fi troubleshooting.

If every device on the Wi-Fi is offline
Check for an ISP outage and inspect the connection
Using cellular data, check your ISP’s service-status page or contact the provider. An outage or account/service issue will not be fixed by changing a device’s Wi-Fi settings.
- Confirm that the modem is powered on.
- Check that the cable between the modem and router is firmly connected to the router’s WAN or Internet port.
- Consult the equipment manual for what its status lights mean. Light colors and blink patterns are model-specific, so there is no universal meaning for a red, orange, or blinking light.
A router’s Internet or WAN status can provide another clue. On some TP-Link routers, an Internet IP of 0.0.0.0 means the router has not received a valid address from the modem. Check the cable and, if practical, test the modem directly. If the router shows a valid Internet IP but access still fails, DNS or another configuration issue may be involved. These labels and menus are specific to the equipment; see TP-Link’s router internet troubleshooting guidance.

Restart the modem and router using their instructions
Follow the sequence in your modem, router, or ISP instructions; timing differs by equipment. Microsoft’s general guidance is to disconnect both devices, wait about 30 seconds, power up the modem first and allow it to settle, then power up the router and wait for it to start. A combined modem/router needs only one restart. TP-Link’s timing guidance is specific to its own instructions and equipment, not a universal rule. Test the modem directly if you can
A direct wired test can help distinguish a router/Wi-Fi problem from a failure farther upstream. If your computer and modem have Ethernet ports, disconnect the router and connect the computer to the modem with an Ethernet cable. Follow the modem or ISP’s instructions for reconnecting and testing.

- Dual band router upgrades to 1200 Mbps high speed internet (300mbps for 2.4GHz plus 900Mbps for 5GHz), reducing buffering and ideal for 4K stream
- Full Gigabit Ports - Gigabit Router with 4 Gigabit LAN ports, ideal for any internet plan and allow you to directly connect your wired devices
- Boosted Coverage - Four external antennas equipped with Beamforming technology extend and concentrate the Wi-Fi signals
- MU-MIMO technology - (5GHz band) allows high speeds for multiple devices simultaneously
- Access Point Mode - Supports AP Mode to transform your wired connection into wireless network, an ideal wireless router for home
- If the computer gets online directly through the modem but not through the router’s Wi-Fi, the router or Wi-Fi path becomes a stronger suspect.
- If the direct connection also fails after you restart the modem, contact your ISP.
This test may not work as a simple plug-in check for every service: some providers require particular connection settings, credentials, or device registration. Do not change WAN credentials or clone a MAC address unless your ISP or equipment documentation specifically directs you to. Microsoft describes the direct-modem test in its Windows Wi-Fi troubleshooting guidance; TP-Link and D-Link also discuss isolating the modem and router path in their support material: TP-Link router troubleshooting and D-Link Wi-Fi connected but no Internet guidance.
Match other clues to possible causes
- ISP outage or service issue: The whole network may be offline despite strong bars. Check the provider’s status page or contact support.
- Router-to-modem link: A loose cable, incorrect port, or failed WAN connection can leave local Wi-Fi available without internet access.
- Device IP or DHCP problem: The device may connect to Wi-Fi without receiving usable local network settings. On Windows, a
169.254.x.xaddress is a clue to check DHCP when automatic addressing is expected. - DNS problem: The device may be connected but unable to resolve website names. Check the configured DNS server before considering a change.
- Proxy or other device-specific setting: A manual proxy or similar configuration can affect one device rather than the whole network.
- Address conflict or access control: Duplicate IP addresses or router administrator/parental-control restrictions can matter in some network setups. D-Link lists these as possible causes, not a default explanation: D-Link support guidance.
When to contact your ISP or router support
Contact your ISP if its status page confirms a disruption, a direct modem connection still cannot reach the internet after a restart, or the modem does not receive service. If the router’s status or configuration appears to be the remaining problem, contact the router manufacturer’s support.
To make the support conversation more useful, note whether one or all devices fail, whether the direct wired test worked, your modem and router models, any WAN/IP status shown, and the steps you have already tried. TP-Link specifically recommends having router Internet IP, modem model/type, and completed troubleshooting details available when contacting its support: TP-Link router troubleshooting.
